Despite knowing what was going to happen I've been eaten alive by anxiety the whole episode. I applaude Sam and Tobias for those scenes... The worst is yet to come though. I don't think I'm ready!
Was waiting for this episode to end the whole time I was watching it. I know it’s based off a book, but this episode felt like it went unnecessarily into Jack Randall and his cruelty. Wasn’t feeling it.
The scenes shot in the jail cell were completely unnecessary and very triggering. There was no need for them to be so explicit and they didn't add anything to the story or to the development of the characters . I skipped a good chunk of it and still understood the story, so. There are more ways to portray what happened there.
This episode was so unexpected from beginning to end.
As Jamie is minutes away from being hung, Black Jacks rides in like a knight with orders to stop the execution. Now, we know Randal has an obssession with Jamie, and if he saved his life, then it can't be for good reason. But again, Randall is the last person you'd expect to save Jamie from death's door.
Randall is obssession with Jamie is not just physical/sexual, but rather a sick saddistic one, where he gets off on having control over and being able to inflict pain onto Jamie (as we've seen previously with the scars that he's left on Jamie's back). Jack wants to have his way with Jamie so much he's willing to negotiate for it.
Meanwhile poor Claire is trying to manipulate her way into the prison and ultimately to Jamie's cell in an attempt to rescue him. Only to find his mangled and bloody body at the hands of her worst nightmare. And still in order to ensure her safety, Jamie promises his body over to Randal to do as he pleases. Even when Jamie is on the verge of death, with a tortured body, his first priority is always Claire's safety.
Even as Jamie and Claire fight to defend themselves against Jack and his goone, it;s still hard to watch as Jamie is tortured and left with a mangled hand, or watch Claire be almost assaulted by jack's servant. Even worse was watching Claire watch was Jack further maimes Jamie and then forces himself on her husband. Episode was brutal to watch mainly cause thats the whole focus of the episode. How much pain will Jack inflict? How much can Jamie endure? Will Claire be able to save him?
what the fuck did i just watch
Whelp, Randall makes me sick to my stomach.
Absolutely horryfing in terms of content, though perhaps good as far as film craft is concerned. It is hard for me to decide which character was a more terrible monster, Randall or Ramsey from Game of Thrones.
Dullest episode of the season, shot almost entirely on location inside one jail cell. Has been a great season, but this episode really dragged, didn’t move the storyline on at all, didn’t add anything to the character development, and if you missed this episode, I’m sure you would still follow the story pretty easily
This episode and the next one are the hardest to watch in all the first 4 seasons.
They focused too much in Randall's cruelty... which albeit necessary to the story, makes it really difficult to watch, let alone enjoy.
Even worse, it meant that in order to make the story fit in two episodes, they had to cut out a lot from the books: Claire with the wolves and the guards, most of MacRannoch's part... and once in the abbey, Geillis' drug, the thermal waters, most of the monk conversations with Claire...

The show was so much more interesting when it was about life in the highlands instead of the cruelties of one man. :|
