The new place is visually refreshing. The actress behind Suzanne keeps playing her role really well but the episode should have given more screen time to the other characters too.
I'm kinda disappointed.
It feels like the last few seasons the quality of the show has gone downhill. Last season was a whole mess, but this first episode seems even more like one. I'll be watching the season to an end, but I'll definitely be complaining.
To clarify: I'm a woman, I have mental disorders and I am a part of a minority. My opinions have before been shrugged of as a "white privileged male"s opinions, so I'm hesitant on writing this and it sucks that I have to clarify this so that people would even listen to me since it doesn't matter in my opinion. But yeah.
I'll just mark this all as spoilers.
The new surrounding is very visually appealing. It's a new, fresh place and it actually looks more like a prison. From what I gathered, it was needed, and I appreciate the change. I was very confused by the first 10 minutes, and every time Crazy Eyes (Suzanne) came on since I didn't understand what was going on until it was clear she was hallucinating. Then it sort of became clear what it was and I think the portrayal of having a hallucination is very accurate. Props for that.
However, rest is pretty lame.
All the guards are really one-dimensional. They're either violent or incompetent, and there has been no portrayal of good guards in a long time. I feel like it's going out of their way to portray "systematic racism" or whatever people call it with scenes where only black people get beaten by white guards, when in reality, if a prison guard beats up an inmate they'll be jailed themselves. I feel the show is going all out to push an agenda, a narrative, and I feel pretty disgusted by it. It has been going on for a few seasons now, sure: but having at least 3-4 "bad guards" violating all of these poor, victimized women of color with sexual assault or battery is just straight out lying and pushing a narrative. If that were to happen in real life, I bet by guts out that it would be a very, very big scandal and they wouldn't get away scoot-free.
Oh and don't get me started on putting two dangerous inmates in ad-seg together. What are the writers thinking? Are they trying to get them to murder each other?
I do appreciate the portrayal of CO Alvarez in this episode. He shows clear autistic tendencies; oddly spesific about his pens because of what kind of sensory output it gives him, unable to read his coworker, not able to show empathy. I sure hope he'll stay as a "good guy" or I'll make sure to raise hell over how they're portraying autistic; I've had enough people tell me how I'm bad or doesn't fit into the society due to my autism, so portraying the "bad guy" as autistic will only make autistic look even worse - no matter if the autistic person was a male or female, guard or inmate. If they're "evil", it'll just make all of us look bad.
Anyway that's my take on this episode.
Where the hell is Alex??
Poor Suzanne. This new wardens are the worst.
in the middle of the episode I lost any interest in what’s happening on the screen. boring episode.
New season is always an adjustment for this show. With each one they push for something fresh and different and this one did just that.
Predominantly Suzanne focused and even getting to see the world though her eyes sometimes (fantasy twist included) it helped soften the blow of the absolutely dire situation our girls are now in.
The scene has been set with the odds well and truly stacked against them. Let's see if this show can continue to deliver.
Great opening I gotta say

big black girl from prison
I'm so excited to watch this today. It left us in emotional turmoil last season. I'm ready for what's to come at Litchfield..are the women or the viewers. I have no more tears left..I hope this will have a happier outcome.
five more days to go

I've never been a fan of Suzanne (though I do feel sad for her) so this was a bit tough to watch. The first ten minutes and some of the longer hallucinations were a real drag for me and I was really close to skipping it. I hope this won't happen in every episode and each episode will instead focus on another person.
And I'm not sure what to think about Badison so far. Neither the actress nor the character convinced me. She just seems... fake and boring.
Besides that the episode was just okay. It felt rather slow and kind of recycled. I hope the other episodes will be better.
