best episode until now by far, loved it
If you watch just one episode of "Mythic Quest," make it this one. You don't even need to watch the pilot to understand it as it's 100% standalone. Just keep in mind the rest of the show is in a very different tone.
This particular episode is a heartfelt meditation on the power of a creative vision and how time threatens it. It's also really well acted and written. Funny, bittersweet, and surprising.
I gotta wonder if maybe this is the show the creators wanted to make from the get-go but had to compromise their vision until it became "Mythic Quest"...
No idea from where or how this episode found its way in the middle of the show but quality wise might just be the best. It hits like a hammer. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea so not everyone will like it which is expected but even if you watch a single episode of this series make it this one and judge for yourself.
I don't remember the last time I cried in general, much less because of a tv show, but this did it. I'm glad this story was told in a short runtime and not stretched out into a full-length movie. It was concentrated and just perfect, not one second of filler. The casting, the acting, the writing, the music choices, the quiet moments, everything.
Did not expect something like this in the middle of this slightly above-average office sitcom, but it's maybe because it was so unexpected that I liked it even more. Could've done without the pointless post-credits scene, I guess they were obligated to tie it to the main show. Anyway I'd love to see an anthology series by the writers of this episode having full creative freedom and see what they come up with.
Well that was interestingly different
Woah! Talk about a gear shift! What a bold choice to sandwich this in the middle of the season. A really interesting way to show the heart of a game/intention of the creators being twisted along the way by the marketing and higher production pressures.
The main show does this in a much lighter fashion so it's a real gut punch to see it laid so bare.
It's a really good way of showing how games like Mass Effect: Andromeda or films like Justice League can stray so far from the original goal despite the best intentions.
The whole show should be like this. I’m in awe.
Its almost as if this was the pitched version of the show and the non-creatives turned it into wildly unfunny mythic quest.
I don't know what happened here but I don't mind as this episode was beautiful, touching, and made my eyes sweat a little.
Wonderfully done.
Ten episodes of this would have been much preferred, methinks
I'm loving this show more and more episode by episode. I still think it works the best when it shouldn't work at all, and it's amazing how this particular episode was standalone and managed to comprise the core idea of the show better than the previous ones. But again, it's scaling and getting clearer, but this was the most noticeable - notable, even - by far.
The four previous instalments have been the archetypal rough start for U.S. sitcoms, where writers, directors and ensembles have struggled to find the tone and rhythms required for their comedy to sing. There were sparks of promise, particularly in the previous episode ("The Convention"), but you'd have to be the most charitable and/or perspicacious person in the world to be able to infer "A Dark Quiet Death" from said sparks. It's true, "The Convention"'s suddenly sharpened satirical stabs at the video game industry carry through to this episode, but still, its sharp left turn into deeply empathetic, acutely observed chamber drama came all the way out of nowhere. It's a move nigh-on unprecedented for a freshman series: Veering away from its principal setting and characters to tell a peripheral, vaguely related story in the same world is a move usually reserved for long-running shows either comfortable or desperate enough to need – or be able to afford – a hail mary diversion like this.
So I have no idea what the producers are trying to do with "A Dark Quiet Death". Is it a soft reset, Mythic Quest saying that, actually, we want our core experience to be more like this, and less like the bumbling workplace shenanigans of its early episodes? Have the showrunners and execs calculated that shooting a couple of one-offs like this every season would make for a better use of the resources at their disposal? Or is it a statement of intent, letting the audience know that MQ something richer and more complex than we'd been led to expect?
Whatever the answer is, I'm excited to learn what it is. At the very least, "A Dark Quiet Death" was so good that I'm willing to sit through another batch of ho-hum episodes if it means I'll get another one like it.
Really really cool episode. Love Jake Johnson and Cristin Millioti and it's really well directed.
I have just one question: Why ?!?
The Episode is enjoyable but doesn't belong in this Show!
One of my favorite episodes of television
Even though this episode depicts a complete standalone story, it was the best so far. Really unexpected and moving story.
I was very meh on this series until this episode and can only hope this standard continues. Was hoping bad it would end up being Ian's parents and filling out the lawsuit backstory.
Fucking phenomenal as a standalone short-film. Forget about the rest of the series(which is ok) but watch this regardless.
This short film is a masterclass in pacing.
MY FIANCE AND I
MY LOVELY WIFE
LOVE OF MY LIFE
my ex wife :/
bye beans :((((((((((((((((
THIS IS THE BEST DAMN THING I'VE EVER WATCHED IN MY WHOLE LIFE, LIKE WHAT THE DUCK.
I´ve loved Jake since 2011 and I became obssesed with Cristin thanks to Palm Springs and now the best two people ever got together to be in the best thing ever created by the people behind the best comedy show ever (IASIP). This is just the universe giving me something great after so much suffering. this is amazing.
The first 10 minutes were what happiness feels like, I was so happy I was gonna explode.
And then the other 10 minutes were bittersweet cause you knew what was coming but didn't wanna believe it and then the last 10 minutes broke me, but still I'm so thankful for this story, i would do it again and again and again. I DEMAND THE SPIN OFF WITH THIS STORY FROM THE BEGINNING!!!!
The only thing I didn't love was that the story starts in 1993, and they are what like in their 30s? late 20s? and then we see through 2006, that would make them around 45 years old so why put them with all that gray hair? just longer hair for her and maybe jake would be wearing a cardigan and that's it. ALSO I DON'T BELIEVE SHE HAS KIDS! She was buying the game for herself.
Oof, my heart was not ready. Beautifully done
I cannot help but think this episode was made to bait people into start/continue watching if it were perceived positively because this is not the format for it nor should something like this be made this early into a show.
While I liked the first 10 minutes and the duo of Cristin Milioti and Jake Johnson it just quickly turned into "cringe" as there was a major disconnect between what they wanted to tell and how they went about it in a video game context....
A good point to drop this show tho.
This episode feels like a backdoor pilot as it has nothing to do with rest of the series. This is an interesting step away from the show. I liked it.
Like the series in general but this episode was amazing. Like others have said stand-alone and at the moment not sure why it was in the middle of the series….. baffled but glad
Holy shit, this was fantastic. This is the show I was looking for when I started watching Mythic Quest, but I didn't find it until this episode. Cristin Miloti is outstanding in the episode, and Jake Johnson is pretty good too. This is totally watchable for anyone, no matter if you've seen the show or not. I knew the creative team had it in them, given the great minds behind the show.
It's a worry when a stand alone episode, barely connected other than a reference at the end, does more in 1 episode than the main show has done in 4.
Please put Jake Johnson in everything. He just has the nuisance required for these roles.
I don't know where the idea / need for this episode came from, but it was quite fantastic, with the only criticism being its seeming complete disconnectedness from rest of the show so far, apart from a rough tie-in at the end.
Okay. I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one confused as fuck about what happened to Mythic Quest and did I somehow switch to a completely different, yet loosely related show.
WTF? Where did the show go? This is marginally better, but just WTF?
Just watching this episode, loving every minute of it and wondering where it sits in the story arc. BUT WHO CARES, IT'S GREAT, maybe the best episode of this season.
Dude, wait, what?? I want to laugh, not to cry!
Sweet story. Not exactly what I signed up for though.
series put me to sleep. multiple times. autoplay came up with this gem!
I don’t understand. What does this have to do with the show? Kind of random.

Why is everything that has Cristin Milioti in it just great?
