[6.8/10] Another episode where there’s a handful of sketches that are pretty great, a handful that are pretty fair, but nothing really that either blows you away or is completely DOA.
The opening Playboy Club parody was well-done, and the funniest sketch of the night may have been the follow-up, a satire of boys clubs the world ‘round showing how nominally equal groups and activities give girls the short shrift in escalating ridiculous ways.
The reporters piggybacking on other reporters’ broadcasts is a chuckle-worthy counterpart from the “we make the news” skit from last season. The kidnapper who completely screws up his scheme is a nice enough exercise in comic stupidity. And the ad for underground cop tapes is another good fake commercial (one of the show’s strengths).
The Wycked Septre video sketch was pretty bad though. There’s definitely some humor in a super macho heavy metal band being unwittingly gay, but it’s a one-joke sketch and plays on some pretty rough stereotypes and a certain strain of “gayness is inherently funny” that’s been an issue with the show since early on.
The “Menocu Buttplugs” sketch feels like a rehash of the “cock ring warehouse” sketch from last season. And the “house of the future” skit is one those trademark Mr. Show bits that goes on way too long. The awkward presentation style and vague Walt Disney-esque view of the future is good for a laugh, and the celebrity voice impersonations give the scene a boost, but it just runs out of gas eventually.
And “Racist in the Year 3000” is the closest thing this episode had to a real dud. The opening bit and intro was just loony enough to work, but it’s another instance of Mr. Show doing a one punchline skit and trying to extend to fill time to no avail. Though I did appreciate the Benny Hill homage over the credits.
Overall, this is a perfectly fine episode, but one with a bunch of material that never rises above “pretty good” and only a single truly memorable sketch.
