[8.3/10] Really fun episode, with tons of laughs. The whole “lost episode” phenomenon is a little less salient today than it (presumably) was in 1998, but it’s a fun idea to drive the episode, and the setup and payoff with the Planet of the Apes-referencing banana gag was brilliant.
The “Entertainment 4-Every-1” clips were amusing, especially Jay Johnston’s “herky jerky dancer.” But I just died laughing at the “East Coast vs. West Coast Ventriloquists” sketch. Blending the severity of rap feuds with the old timey corniness of ventriloquist dummies led to so many great laughs.
I also got a big kick out of the lunacy of Bob inviting the a guy he once tried to kill for swiping his newspapers over for dinner sketch. It’s an out there premise, but Bob, David, and Jill play it to the hilt, and it has all kinds of great comic twists and turns.
The “Maury Show” parody wasn’t my favorite and a little stereotypical at times, but Bob & David were at least giving their all, and as someone who watched those type of shows when I was younger, it’s not necessarily an inaccurate spoofing.
The Lie Detector sketch was wild at times, but had some great little bits, like Bob railing against the “dream” question, or Paul F. Thompkins putting his face in his hands after getting a disturbing revelation. It was a little broad, but still fun.
And the Yellow Submarine-esque riff on shows aimed at kids that were full of 60s/70s drug references was colorful, creative, and amusing, with a kind of craft and loony spirit the show doesn't always aim for.
Overall, a superb episode with the main sketches in particular all being winners.
