Mr & mrs smith both a very much unlikeable characters
This is ok, the whole show hinges on the chemistry between the leads as the spy story connecting them seems to only be an excuse to give push them together. As much as I appreciate the different approach, I’m not sure if their relationship can maintain enough interest for a whole series. The success of their spy missions is more of a McGuffin and only has value that they feel it does because there isn’t a lot of believability in how things play out. There is a nice idea with John Tutoro’s character in this episode but I think it misses the mark a little bit, which ultimately makes it’s influence on Jane and John’s marriage seem forced.
They're so bad at their job it's kind of adorable
The barcode looks a bit like an angry Togepi :joy:
Is this show sponsored by Range Rover lol
It seems like They are trying too hard to be all genres, they need to either lean in more to the comedy, the love or the action. The mix of all three is not really working for me. It’s kind of boring.
Also it’s kind of upsetting that they broke the pact so early especially in the most nonchalant way.
I'm watching this in two episode batches. This first batch confirms everything I was worried about regarding this show. The tension in MMS is about spies who are lying to each other but are in a relationship with each other.
Now I didn't necessarily need the same old "our marriage is tired and boring until we revealed our sexy secrets to each other" storyline. It WAS effective in the movie and I'm super curious about the Scott Bakula series which I'm sure is going to be very interesting if I can track it down.
But that tension between them having to pretend for a living and pretend at home is kind the whole point. What we have instead is just spies who have to date for the mission (and presumably fall for each other). And in THAT setup... this isn't doing so hot. Again I like the actors but I don't like the chemistry between them. For my money drop Donald and get Maya someone she can work with and while I like Maya this isn't my pick of a role for her. It's just not the worst and she's slightly better and more interesting than Donald here. There's a little kiss kiss at the end of episode two and even that didn't really break the slow dreary uncompelling pace that doesn't seem to know what it is. We'll see if it ramps up.
This was stupid. They crawl around like dogs humiliating themselves and they are hesitant to kiss each other.
It’s very boring, the leads do have a bit of chemistry but the show relies way too much on them which shouldn’t be a bad thing but unfortunately the writing is just too bland everything is so uninteresting.
Given the stakes, John & Jane's laughable missteps and miscommunications on this mission ought to make us worried about their longevity at the company -- or above ground. But we're only in the second episode of this spy/relationship comedy, so let's not narc them out to Anonymous Mercenary HR, M.K...?
My favorite part of this episode was probably John Turturro's drugged silent auction confession. Would have loved to learn more about those guests' dirty secrets. Turturro's is the first of several fun guest performances Mr. & Mrs. Smith features this season.

well they broke that pact fast! this is just lazy writing - you think they'd at least work up towards it over a few episodes! yes, he foreshadowed a "kiss" after a bad day made you forget everything. they would have more realistically teased each other about the "dog kiss" to create some tension & a few laughs & THEN maybe discover something there. perhaps I've just read Jane wrong but her asking for a kiss given how adamant she was their relationship is just "business" just that morning didn't feel in character. (what little has been developed in two episodes!)
