Moral Orel: Season 3

3x02 Grounded

This is the closest thing to a regular "Orel misconstrues a lesson and goes overboard" episode we've had in a while, and even it gets pretty meta and conceptual and experimental. That's a good thing in my book. The show is getting more ambitious in its animation and direction. The design of Orel's view of heaven, and the strange phantasmagoria he sees in the rush of images when he's in the throes of death are out there and visually arresting.

There's not a lot of laughs in the episode (though Doughy wishing that church would walk to him for once and then getting trampled by Orel in a church costume was pretty funny), but Orel's Shining-esque insanity at being deprived of church and his near-death visions made this one grab you with its weird take on the afterlife. What's more, I appreciated the symbolism of Orel seemingly having his religiousness, or at least his belief in that specific church, being beaten out of him by Clay. The show continues to take left turns into dark, sometimes bizarre territory, but I'm definitely glad to be on board for the ride.
