5.1/10. I like what they were going for with a lot of this one: the shame people feel when they’re not happy with their own bodies, the insecurity and self-loathing of being someone’s failsafe or second choice, and the idea of exploring the lives of some background characters and showing how they were affected by the events of the main narratives over the course of the show.
But it just didn’t come together. The body-shaming thing with Florence (coupled with her zebra-loving, Rev. Putty-fantasizing bent) was presented in a pretty blunt way, and Dottie was a little too cartoony and ridiculous to work as a foil or counterpoint. A lot of the attempts to fit Florence and Dottie into the bigger events of the show felt rushed and not particularly natural. And the whole deal with Putty sleeping with Florence while saying Dottie’s name was a thematic 2x4 for the point of the episode. It just didn’t work for me.
That said, I appreciate the hint given at the end of the episode, where we see that all the events of the season have led to everyone in the church feeling unhappy and hopeless. It’s a nice setup for (what I hope will finally be) the aftermath of the events of “Nature.”
