Moral Orel: Season 1

1x08 Maturity

I have to admit, I don't really know how to rate this one. People had warned me that the show gets dark (with it getting even darker in S2), but so far, the show's darkness has mostly been in the Robot Chicken vein, i.e. gallows humor with a certain tongue-in-cheek distance from the serious implications. But there's wide stretches here where there's not much of a joke to be seen or heard, just unsettlingly real adult dysfunction. That's bold; I'll give it that much.

Orel deciding that alcohol will make him more mature, and descending into misery because of it carries on in that vein. And the conclusion, where Orel's dad explains that working a soul-numbing job and being stressed about things beyond your control is what earns you the right to booze and be emotionally distant has a certain satire to it that makes it a little funny, but is mostly just kind of harsh and tragic. Again, this was an exceptionally dark twist on the show's typical "Orel takes a lesson or sermon the wrong way/too far" blueprint, and I'm kind of impressed at how the show committed to that, but also a little disturbed by it.
