Gaius' backstory turned out to be surprisingly interesting, even though it has very little to do with the Arthurian legends. It would be great to see some flashbacks from Gaius and Alice's youth and the times before Uther outlawed magic, however all we got were they discussing their memories instead of showing these memories, which would have been better. It is great that Alice's story ended happily and with Gaius' help she managed to escape the pyre as it seems she was possessed by the manticore and not fully responsible for her actions. The episode emphasises Uther's crimes and genocide in trying to kill all people with magic, making us wonder whether he is a good person and whether he is worth saving and protecting at all. He gives the impression of being a terribly cruel person when it comes to magic, and what is worse, he neither changed his views nor repented his mass murder of magical people, which makes him a questionable character who cannot be considered "a good guy." I guess he is protected only for the sake of Arthur so that Arthur would not suffer when he loses his father, because he is not a positive person. Anyway, it is interesting where the plotting girl Morgana and her maid have been this episode? Alice's actions would have certainly be approved by Morgana, for some time I though the poisoning plan may be inspired by her.

If Episode 1 Merlin wouldn't put up with Arthur using his servants like targets, then why the fuck is Season 3 Merlin putting up with it?
Also, why the fuck is Gaius acting like the goblin is possessing him again???
This episode was just an excuse to treat Merlin like shit and I can't stand it.
