[9.5/10] Another real winner of a Venom episode. The show leaned into Venom as almost a slasher movie monster. The way his attacks on Spidey were as much psychological as they were physical was an interesting tack. The fact that Eddie gathered so many people to hurt Peter emotionally the way that Eddie himself felt hurt is a cool approach. I’ll admit that the “Peter Parker is Spidey!” fake out made me shake my head a little, and Miles seeing and being able to impersonate blue and red Spider-Man just in time is super convenient. But overall, the confrontations still had real stakes given Venom’s power and the people put in harm’s way.
The animation on Venom is also really good. The scene of Max looking at his transformation in shadow is really evocative. The way he tries to consume Spider-Man via a mouth in his midsection while Spidey attempts to wriggle away is some skin-crawling body horror. And even the scenes of Venom getting blasted with the convenient soundwave device while Eddie cries and reaches out for it is really well done.
Plus, it’s a good J.J. episode! The way he stands up to Venom is admirable from ol’ sourpus. And the way he still blames Spider-Man for all of this despite being saved by him, and fires Peter for the association, is both true to form and poses interesting new challenges for our hero.
Overall, this one captures your attention from the word go, and doesn't let go for one second, making Eddie Brock a tragic but dangerous figure in the best tradition of the character.
