[8.1/10] I’ll admit, I got kind of lost when we introduced The Avengers, an fourth superhero-relevant school, and another evil organization, all in the same episode. But hey! Spidey and Ms. Marvel make for an unexpectedly great team, and I like the idea behind the episode too.
The show does well with “grass is greener” episodes, where Spidey is tired of being hated and wishes he had the admiration of an Avenger, while Ms. Marvel is tired of having to compare herself to the best of the best and follow their lead. The two of them have a fun, playful dynamic, and I bought their little flirtations and teases hook, line, and sinker. Gwen who?
The whole bit with AIM and Scientist Supreme and Grady the well-meaning science kid were a little much for me, but it’s neat to have a little ecosystem that doesn't feel like a rehash of something else. I’m sure most (if not all) of these things are drawn from the comics, but as someone whose current comic knowledge is pretty thin, it’s neat to see Spidey operating in what feels like a pretty complete, but previously unseen world.
The Avengers apearances are mostly set-dressing, and the whole power drain setup is a little weird, but again, the strength of the Ms. Marvel/Spider-Man team-up and spying bit goes a long way toward buoying it. I’m definitely on board for more adventures with the two of them (though I didn’t realize that Ms. Marvel had stretchy powers, which I’ll admit I find a little silly, albeit for no good reason.)
Overall, this one succeeds thanks to Peter and Kamala having a certain opposites attract quality, both as heroes and as semi-normal kids, which carries the episode through some of the generic villain scheme material.
