I love it. Need the season 2 pls!
Every decision in this second season makes me wanna scream.
"Love, Simon" was a film that did not propose anything new, but it did so in a fresh and fun way. The adaptation as a series (a kind of continuation), makes the mistake of exploring the same ideas in the same way. Which makes it useless. There seems to be an idea of approaching the uncertainty of adolescent sexuality, but in the end the approach is very basic. And what's worse, although the series appears to be open-minded, it is deeply conservative, especially in the way it deals with infidelity, sexuality and the relationship of children to parents.
Well... that was disappointing.
Listen, this show has its heart in the right place. Its intentions are truly good. And that's honestly the reason I made it throught till the end. But I genuinely don't understand how this has a 93% score in Rotten Tomatoes.
The storyline and the dialogue are so unrealistic and cheesy that it affects the overall experience. The actors are okay (I especially enjoyed the girl who plays Mia), but they have to deal with such bad dialogue that it makes them look worse than they are. Look, I understand that I'm a little too old (21) to be the target audience for this show, but I don't think that's an excuse.
Love, Simon was an (in my opinion) unexpected success because it managed to be a fun, light and funny teen movie that still had a lot of emotional moments and great performances. It didn't try to be something else, and that was its biggest strength. Love, Victor tries to replicate the atmosphere of the movie, but it fails to do so. There are great topics being discussed here, and representation is always amazing, but in this case, the fact that the show doesn't seem to take itself seriously has a negative impact on the story. Some of the situations and conversations are borderline bizarre and unbelievable, and they turn what could be a relatable and touching story into a 'just okay' show. The way people react and respond in conversations is extremely clunky and unnatural. It's cool if they wanted to go for a 'light' tone, but even when the show tries to go for comedy, it's often not very good comedy. And honestly, what's up with that terrible Hallmark-movie title sequence?
It also doesn't make any sense that Victor and Simon become instant best friends. It's just the most random thing about the show for me. Nick Robinson is in one of the episodes (although he couldn't make it to set, apparently, because the scenes where he's in are heavily edited to make it look like he's actually there when he's not). It would've been a nice touch to have him here, if it wasn't for the fact that his inclusion in this story doesn't serve any purpose other than fan service. I really think the story would have been the same, if not better, without Simon being in it.
I also thought the story would explore bisexuality, but it's just never even considered as a possibility. It's okay if Victor's gay, but the show seems to solve every problem in the most basic way. Either you're gay, or you're not. That's reflected on the dialogue in multiple scenes and with many other subjects. I thought his story with Mia would lead to an original discussion about this, but nope.
It's a shame, because I really enjoyed most of the characters, especially Felix, Lake, and Pilar, but also the main characters. The guy who plays Victor does a great job. I hope season 2 (which I'm pretty sure will exist) gives them something better to work with.
There are still some emotional and funny moments here. Is it great? No. It's not terrible either. But even though it deals with important things and has the potential to be a really good show, the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
Maybe next season...
EDIT: Nope. The second season is even worse, bordering on offensive. Its representation of LGBT themes and characters is straight-up terrible. This show is basically a disguised hate crime, with characters shouting "yas queen" like in the worst of Netflix shows. I don't want to find out if this was written by a person belonging to the LGBT community, but it definitely doesn't seem like it. Seems like something that would be considered progressive in 2001, not 2021.
Is this show as good as the movie that the world is based on? Nope. Is it still incredibly enjoyable? Hell yea. It is an easy, quick watch that will likely make a decent chunk of the fan base fall in love with it. When the show was originally just on Hulu for Seasons 1 and 2, I think the overall quality was a smidge higher. Season 3 also being on Disney brought in a bit more cheesiness to the production. Overall, if you have gone this far to read this, it likely sounds interesting enough to you and you should check it out!
Average Season Review: 8.17/10
Recommendation: At Least Give it a Whirl (For Love, Simon Fans)
The change of couples every 5 episodes is exasperating
Victor and Benji keep getting on my nerves in season 2 although I loved them both in season 1. Mia was annoying both seasons. Felix though is the cutest, his storyline is great, emotional, and deep, i enjoyed watching him the most, i specifically liked the scene with his caseworker and Benji's mom when he was crying in her arms, we could see that he isn't just the goofy/nerdy best friend and that he has so much going on in his life. will probably watch season 3, hopefully, Benji and victor work things out, and he doesn't end up with rahim??????
OMG NEED SEASON 3 like yesterday
God I want a second season already... Binged the first in a day and just want to see what happens!
Really enjoyed this new series and really really hope they get picked up for season 2!!
oh boi!
so easy to watch. this one is a perfect comfort series.
i am watching it and forgot everything.
i could watch 100 seasons.
stupid gay scripts ruined the whole series ....
I wish there was more, but I am also glad there isn’t. Finally a production that decides to end it on a high instead of forcing another season and another one and another one.
Sad that it has ended though. Finally seeing normal gay life on screen was really nice. Hope we will see more of it in general.
Acting was not amazing and I honestly enjoyed the third season most, where no voiceover Simon-Victor dialogue was necessary. Story-wise the first two seasons were the best though.
Too bad they decided to stop it just when the characters were about to live their life as young adults! It could have been great to see them dealing with bigger problems!
The second season is waaaaaaaaay better than the first !! Going from Disney to Hulu save this show !!
OMG this is sooo good, love it. Please hurry up season 2
kinda cheesy but suuuuuuper cute and lovely
A story with a lot of emotions and feelings.Just don't compare this with love simon. This is good in its own way with more substances.
Really enjoyed this. My partner and I watched it in one day. Bring on Season 2!

Pretty basic writing/storyline but it doesn’t matter because it’s real and resonates. The acting is good enough to carry the story and the special moments and interactions with Simon keep you wanting more. 2nd season needed!!
