[7.2/10] This one didn’t really grab me at first, but as IASIP episode are bound to do, it more or less found it’s place once it embraced the escalating lunacy. This is sort of a mix of Misery and “Moody Foody”, one of the most enjoyable episode of Bob’s Burgers (and which post-dates this episode). The idea of the gang kidnapping a critic who bashes Paddy’s Pub in the local newspaper doesn’t pay a lot of dividends initially. Dee, Dennis, and Charlie trying to prove that they’re classy is mainly a non-starter, and Mac’s focus on proving that he’s a cool bouncer is fairly meh as well.
But once things start spiraling out of control, to the point of kidnapping the critic’s neighbor, nabbing what they think is the neighbor’s cat, having to help the captives go to the bathroom, and frantic debates about whether forced amnesia is a thing, the episode gets much funnier. Hell, even the flat-screen T.V. having a point in the narrative is an unexpected nice touch. And the finish, with the critic writing an even worse review but declaring he won’t press charges since The Gang having to deal with one another is a worse fate, is a nice way to tie up the episode, only matched by the group still being incensed that he didn’t mention their names and starting the whole cycle over again, replete with hammer.
Overall, this one starts slow but gains strength as it moves along.
