I'm not into kid animes but I liked this one, I don't really know why. I just wanted to learn Go when I read/saw it.
I would recommend watching the special "Journey to the North Star Cup" after the show as it develops the story a little bit.
And if you want more, you can read it as it goes a little more after the special movie.

Sports anime, but with a board game. Hikaru accidentally revives the spirit of legendary Go player Sai. At first reluctant to let Sai play through him, he soon becomes obsessed and starts on the path towards defeating his rival, Akira, using his own skill. Amazingly addictive, well written.
