Definitely feels more and more like a live action BoJack Horseman. Slow burner, but clever and it's showing signs that they are not afraid to not pull punches. An old fame living in the shadow of their past trying to make a comeback, they only separated and mixed this into two characters like they are mirror images of eachothers: Ava is young and talented but keeps making mistakes that will just constantly come back to haunt her, and D is buried herself into old material, and now starts using new stuff that dives into her past even more, to show a side of her that was not visible to others before. Can they not make the same mistakes again? Evolve by eachother? Will they keep fucking it up until find how to heal? It can be a delicate game to balance the humor and the drama, the hard earned success while making me feel that they are not safe nor from themselves, nor from the consequences, and that I should be able to judge them when they make mistakes. BoJack did this, more than very well, with a similar diamond-in-the-rough first reason that struggled to find its voice, only to go deeper and deeper later on and this season (and its finale) gives me similar vibes. There's something really good about this show that is still hidden, I trust the creators will know how to dig down and show it.
Really good, if only that cliffhanger didn't ruin all the fun for me. I hated it.
I really liked how the show went (even tho we didn't got to watch it) cause it was either the best show or the worst show ever, but I loved what they did, not great but not awful, something in the middle that needs to be worked on, a challenge which is exactly what Deborah needed. AND THE CLOSE UP TO THE SHOES! And obviously can't wait for Hacks on the road.
What I didn't love is that for a show that felt so creatively and refreshing, it ended up using a lot of clichés in the dynamic between Deborah and Ava, cause like Ava said WHO EVEN SLAPS SOMEONE NOWADAYS? I mean it kinda makes sense cause Deb is old school, but it felt out of place in her dynamic with Ava, cause D is someone who almost runs you over, someone who bribes you, someone who mocks you, comedy is her weapon so for her to go physical with someone and that someone being Ava, felt super out of character.
And then Ava sending that email was so annoying, cause she already did something similar with the voicemail, and even tho Ava is a messy centennial who screws up a lot, she also has shown a lot of grow and she has a weird but high moral compass so one thing is saying to Deborah YOU ARE A HACK, and a very different one letting others call her that, so even if she was drunk, hurt and in pain that email felt out of character for this new Ava. And I'm centennial too, almost her age, and I related to her in a lot of stuff (but in other stuff absolutely NOT) so I feel like I could be her and I'm telling you, I wouldn't do that. In my former job I also had a boss with a big ego, and she confided in me some stuff and then I quit, we kinda fell off, and never ever I told her secrets to anyone (well maybe my mom) so I feel that's something we centennials don't do.
Also even tho I saw a lot of myself in Ava, I kinda saw as much in Deb, I feel like I'm 50%-50%
Oh also next season all I ask is more DJ! I love Kaitlin so much!
This whole show is just fantastic.
Why did this make me cry
