[7.3/10] Some solid storytelling here. Our travelogue continues as Goliath and company venture to the emerald isles and run into Rory, a directionless local who jaws with his nudging father, and the Banshee, a Child of Oberon who haunts these hills and causes trouble for our heroes.
The premise is pretty simple, but it’s well executed. Banshee wants to stay put and mistakes our heroes for Oberon’s goons meant to retrieve her. Rory bristles at his dad telling him to make something of itself when there’s no avenue for it. Bronx gets to be featured a bit after being mistaken for the titular Hound of Ulster and sniffing out who’s good and who’s bad among them.
That’s the twist! Rory’s punkish partner in crime, Molly, turns out just to be another guise of the Banshee, there to steer him away from realizing his destiny. The same goes for the mysterious lizard creature (who franky looks more like a Chinese dragon) who scares him in the opening stretch. The Banshee pulling strings to keep Rory off balance is a good place to take the story.
Rory realizing he’s a mystical warrior of old is a little less successful, but leads to some cool fights. The animation on the Banshee in particular is excellent, with a blue, ethereal look that marks her visually as a different sort of being. Likewise, Rory’s transformation into an ancient warrior with a lightning staff lends itself well to some cool visuals.
Overall, one of the more solid entries in this Avalan Travelogue arc of the show. (Avalogue? Travelon?) It’s goals are more modest than some outings, but it meets them well.
