[5.7/10] Why are we retconning and redoing things already? I liked the Coldstone episode from last season. It was a little quick, but the basic idea of one of Goliath’s rookery brothers being revived and misled to turn against him, only to discover his innate need to protect his friend, is a good one.
It’s like this episode all but wiped away that one. Coldstone has lost his memory again and recalls none of the past adventures. What’s more, he suddenly has multiple personality syndrome, possibly thanks to contracting a virus when dealing with defense department computers? What the hell is that? The show handwaves it as a combination of science and sorcery at work, but it feels random and unmotivated.
Don’t get me started on the cliché love quadrangle thing the episode does in its flashbacks and virtual reality jaunts. Suddenly Coldstone has a true love, whom he mistakes for carrying a torch for Goliath, but only at the urging of an obviously villainous and manipulative gargoyle. The whole thing is so hacky. I guess I have to remind myself that this is a show aimed at kids, and you’re going to hit some cliché, but I rolled my eyes at the whole thing.
The virtual reality stuff is pretty weak as well. I’m not averse to representing the world of computers and information somewhat impressionistically, but the notion of these evil computer programs at play and viruses in the form of giant tentacles upped the cheese factor for me. Nothing felt real about the interactions between the characters inside Coldstone’s virtual mind, which I suppose is appropriate.
The only real strong point of this one is Elisa and the team trying to hold off external threats so that Goliath can do what he needs to do in the virtual world. There’s some genuine tension there, which is otherwise missing from this one. ANd god help me, I still like elisa’s partner still carrying a great deal of skepticism about the Gargoyles and what they’re up to.
Overall, this is another weak entry in what’s been a surprisingly weak start to the show’s second season. I hope business picks up from here.
