Honestly I'm disappointed. I watched it and I'm happy to have this show back but it looks more like Hulu promotion than anything. Whole episode was about... the show being renoved by Hulu and mentioning that they were cancelled many times... Every... Five... Minutes. I get it, there's a new season, I'm ALREADY watching it. And I know, it's on Hulu, we get it.
Amazing ending of the series from previous season was just... Forgotten. They didn't do anything to make it better, it's just like it wasn't even there, which honestly is super disappointing.
Jokes were funny but most of them were either "hey, we have a new season on Hulu" or forced - joke about "nonbinary robots"? Seriously? Did the writers forgotten episodes like "gender bender" or many cases of "hairy bearded men in dresses that act like woman and have a little surprise for the captain"? Do you think that someone will love you now because you forced "nonbinary" term to a show in few seconds? Because this didn't make any sense at all and is stupid in further context.
I have very low expectations about other episodes, I always thought that the season premiere was supposed to be this big, peak moment, especially when the show is coming back after years. Unfortunately I'm disappointed, but I'll be glad to watch more and judge it then.
I just really really hope that it's not another "let's make this old nostalgic thing once again, poorly, just to make money" sort of thing. It's kinda in fashion, especially now.
It's good the show is back, I guess.
But in the words of Deadpool "Well…That's just lazy writing"
Good news everyone!!! I knew they would joke about being canceled 3 times.
Dear Fulu, please don’t cancel this again!
Yikes. Barely a trace of the clever humor and smart writing I remember. I wish I could unsee this shit show.
[7.4/10] The most important thing about “The Impossible Stream” is that it feels like Futurama. After so many years off the air, the thing you worry about the most is whether a show loses its identity with all the time off. Candidly, it felt that way sometimes during the show’s Comedy Central run. This latest season premiere and re-pilot isn’t the series’ finest hour, and little details like Fry’s voice sounding more worn mean the hand-off is not seamless. But the jokes are on-brand; the characters feel like themselves, and the world of the show is as zany as ever. As Bender himself puts it, “We’re back, baby!”
In truth, I didn’t necessarily want the series to return again. I generally liked the Comedy Central run, but it was hit or miss, and most importantly, we got a superb, touching ending that left me satisfied without the need to ask for more. But the show uses the time-reversing conceit from the previous finale to reset things in a plausible way (or at least what counts for plausible on this wild show), and even let the calendar move so that the show can keep commenting on the present.
It ties nicely into the actual story of the episode, which sees Fry deciding to set a goal of watching every television show, and the rest of the Planet Express crew having to go to great lengths to try to keep him in his binge lest coming out of it kill him.
The episode has plenty of classic Futurama trademarks. There’s tons of self-referential humor and meta gags (see all the jokes about “Fulu” and cancellations.) The episode takes aim at one of Matt Groening’s favorite hobby horses -- television itself. And it stretches a current cultural practice like binge-watching to comical sci-fi extremes.
There’s plenty of good laughs and good lines, which is the most important thing for Futurama. The one-off gags and silly non-sequiturs all fit well. The digs at T.V. and cheap “content” are all potent, including the modern T.V. spoofs. And the show brings back plenty of familiar side characters for good one-off gags. The humor here is on point, which goes a long way.
In truth, there’s not much in the way of emotional investment here. It’s nice that Leela supports Fry and worries about him when he’s in his wild binge situation. But this is much more of a gag fest and wide-ranging Hollywood spoof than anything that wants you to take the characters or their relationships seriously. That’s all good for a comfortable, laugh-worthy return, but I hope the show remembers its heart a little more in the episodes to come.
I’ll be watching what’s to come, though! I remain a little leery about bringing this show back yet again, even as it’s a favorite. As Simpsons fans will tell you, it’s not always great to have even shows you love linger on forever. But if “The Impossible Stream” is any indication, then the new creative team still has what made the show enjoyable for so long. It may not be perfect, but I will, nevertheless, take a show that still very much feels like Futurama.
Welcome Back, Gang. It's been a long 10 years for us.
Plus, how many shows an brag about being cancelled 2 twice and still get a come back.....
As for this first episode - it was amazing. Sure, there were plenty of meta jokes - but they had the same thing when they came back on Comedy Central. And let's face it- many of these animated shows like to poke fun of their parent networks.
What I found highly amusing is that Bender, a Robot with A.I. was responsible for the writing of the show on Fulu. The very thing that the current WGA strike is against - A.I. written shows/ series. But then again, it's Bender. So that A.I. is drowning in booze and hookers
I’m glad they brought it back, loved the first episode.
Solid first episode, keep up the good work folks.
That was really fun! They pulled all the stops with cameos. Let's go!
It wasn't terrible, but honestly who is asking for this. The show has had SEVERAL decent endings at this point (somehow). Just let it go peacefully into the night.
You can tell Fry's VA has aged in the past decade. Hope he didn't strain his voice.
Other than that, this is kind of a "you had to be there" episode. Without the context of being a fan who's waited for years, it's just a bit annoying with the constant "haha we got cancelled" jokes.
this was old classic futurama, not enough jokes about FULU, cancel and reboot
I had no idea it was coming back! I thought it was a trakt issue when I first saw it had to do a double take of the release date
The show that refuses to die is back. And I'm all up for it.
