As I've grown more and more occupied over time I've learned to appreciate more focused approaches to story telling. That could mean cutting out the smaller stuff (like side quests in an RPG) or speeding up fights (like a world championship Pokémon battle) and Fire Force decides to do both. I'm more than okay with this and reading the manga I know that it doesn't come at a unhealthy expense of world or character building. I've really enjoyed watching a certain well known anime about ninja for what amounts to almost half of my life though.
This episode was a good example: In other anime it could have been drawn out to fill episode after episode, giving each battle a lot of room. But like in the manga it's really focused and shows us the main strengths and weaknesses of our heroes without much filler: Arthur's one-hit-mentality and how easily he can be caught off guard if it doesn't work. And Shinra's direct powerful hits and how agile he is, but that he lacks a finisher or some other way to go above his means.
And as always: Animation and sound effects are really good and I'm not disappointed. It comes really close to what I imagined in my head while reading the manga.
