Endeavour: Season 4

4x02 Canticle

I liked the energy and ambience, as well as the representative cosmic explosion of colour in the heyday of the 60s, in this one but the evocation of period was done with the aid of a crowbar rather than scalpel. The limited number of suspects made it rather not worth the effort to keep in touch with the unfolding detail of the case, and the drug allusions seemed to be composed by some puritan, not unlike one of the characters. Although quite in tune with the times, though. It is odd that I expect a more nuanced reading of this despite its periodisation. Yet, cast alongside the gay relationships, and implied free love/polyamory in the story, looked upon with neither censure nor approval, some way to wokify, or of nuancing the attitudes was not really represented any more than Thursday's, "Well you put away many a drink" to Morse. It is always odd to see Morse shy of nudity, when in the first books he is a keen collector of pornography, and has a roving eye.
