Doctor Who: Season 3

3x11 Utopia (1)

Okay, Utopia was high key a banger. its first two thirds were a fun adventure. Jack coming back and him and the Doctor unpacking his eternal life i was really fascinating. The concept of the human race persevering is a recurring one in Doctor Who and I eat that up every time. I even liked Chantho, the makeup and prosthetics on her was fucking amazing and she had a charming quirky personality that bounced off Martha really well.

So I was really loving the rhythm of the story. And then the Master twist is revealed and it recontextualizes everything. Not only did Derek Jacobi put in an incredibly compelling performance as Professor Yano, that compassion drive and hope made him so likable. He especially evokes sadness well as he slowly recalls pieces of his memory as a Time Lord.

That depth made his instant switch once the twist is revealed as the Master all the more impactful.

Never thought I would be happy to see Captain Jack again. This show subverts my own pessimism.
