"a story of a Scottish drag queen who faced off the entire English army"
What!!! Liam Neeson is in the episode. I thought he would pull out Taken quote or two.
[7.3/10] A fun bit of farce to start off the new season. I didn't necessarily split my sides the way I do in some Derry Girls episodes, but there's still plenty to like here.
The A-story is amusing enough. The girls trying to break into their school to find out the results of their big test, only to accidentally aid and abet a robbery, is a nice comic setup. Everyone panicking about their futures and whether this is the right call leads to some solid banter.
But the peak of the story is when they get arrested and interrogated. (Though it did seem a little extreme with the guns and swat team and whatever -- I initially thought it might be that they were on the Irish prank show Michelle had mentioned earlier.) What a boon it is to get Liam Neeson on board! He’s quite funny as the policeman interrogating them, reacting to their nonsense and being bored to death by good ol’ Colm.
That’s the best gag in the whole thing honestly, beyond the girls trying to decide which parent to call, and rejecting “das” because they’re “ma enablers” and in the pocket of “mas.” The fact that Neeson’s character does, in fact, get worn down by Colm’s rambling, or at least gets stalled enough that they catch the real culprits, is a fun resolution to the story. And I love how grateful the girls are to a semi-bewildered Colm.
Sister Michael continues to be aces. Her dry dismissals of the girls, and admitting to messing with them merely because “it was a slow day” got a big laugh out of me. She continues to be the show’s secret weapon.
The B-story isn’t bad either. Granda Joe having a cat named Seamus who causes trouble in the neighborhood is a good cause of conflict with the grown-ups. Joe and Gerry going out to bury the rabbit the cat killed like it’s a dead body from Goodfellas makes for a fun set piece. And the gruff neighbor making veiled threats about the cat to Joe is a good scene. My favorite part of the whole thing is both the grown-ups and the “weans” having made mischief that evening, while trying to play innocent to the other when asked about their activities.
Overall, a solid start!
the look on colm's face when the girls thanked him so cute
Not bad, but I think this is my least favourite episode of the show so far.
they're hamming it up so much, love it
