The BNL exchange is such a ridiculous and hilarious detour. it's those sort of inexplicable and off-handed comments that give characters weight, used sparingly of course. it's used effectively to drive home the idea that they have lives beyond the show. it's also a creative way to express tension.
The shorthand is for Bare Naked Ladies. That's how fundamental they are.

Luke Youngblood, a British actor previously well-known for being Lee Jordan in the Harry Potter movies , managing to overshadow that kind of career highlight by playing an American community college student with a catchphrase that is only the same word repeated twice is still kinda impressive to me.
