I watched this after two of my friends have said they are suffering cancer (which they both blame on the growing up within a couple of hundred of kilometers of the reactor). And while I was watching, there are reports that the war in Ukraine is resulted in increased radiation levels at Chernobyl, and people are starting to talk about nuclear energy as a war of dealing with climate change

I'd like to think that the depiction of the people from almost 40 years ago was realistic. I don't know how accurate the story (or the other accounts I have read) is - but it appears as a completely believable dramatisation covering the explosion and the ensuring politics of coverup and denial by local politicians

Once, I would have thought that level of political ineptitude could never happen in First World Countries. Covid showed how wrong that view was.

Strongly recommend you watch Chernobyl for the drama, to remind you off what happened almost 40 years ago (if you are old enough), and to show little things have changed

Chernobyl is quite an outstanding Miniseries with some excellent acting and relevant script writing. The dialogue is in English so there isn't a problem for those that dislike subtitles.
There are some glaring variances from historical knowledge to the miniseries possibly to dramatise the situation more, the usual demonisation of nuclear energy but it doesn't detract from series itself. The series does give a good depiction of first gen nuclear energy production and the sense that there were short cuts made along with a blasé attitude by gov officials to keep to Mother Russia socialist communism idealistically 'superior'.
I felt the main sense of the series was to show more the political bureaucracy of the Soviet State rather than nuclear accuracy.
The miniseries was very well paced and there was no unnecessary Storyline filler.
Don't miss seeing this.

A masterpiece! Everything is excellent, just one thing bothers me a little. Every soviet speaks in English, strange huh? :D. This is a thing you have to watch for your life.

Really resonated with the last lines of the series.

"To be a scientist is to be naive. We are so focused on our search for the truth we fail to consider how few actually want us to find it. But it is always there whether we see it or not, whether we choose to or not.

The truth doesn't care about our needs or wants, it doesn't care about our governments, our ideologies, our religions. It will lie in wait for all time. And this, at last, is the gift of Chernobyl. Where I once would fear the cost of truth, now I only ask: What is the cost of lies?"

Best factual account of the worst Global Nuclear Disaster. The moral of the story from this DOCUMENTARY is that LIES will be the downfall of all humanity.
