okay so i'm not really reviewing the whole season. there was just one thing that seriously struck me and i didn't know where else to get my thoughts out so i'm writing here.
tw: mentions of rape
max's story, especially during the first season, made me realize something. throughout the season, she suffers extreme sexual abuse, and having to watch that elicited expected reactions of disgust, pity, and concern. at some point, i stopped wanting to look at max, because whenever she appeared on screen, i could not help but remember what she suffered through.
however, when she finally gets out of the tent and much of the abuse/rape stops, the way she acts is what surprised me. she did not lose hope or break because of what happened to her. in fact, she became more of the bold, strong woman she already was.
a lot of the time, i've viewed tragedies such as rape, murder, death, etc. as awful things that i could never recover from and just wished never happened to me. i haven't experienced many of these things, so that hasn't helped. and while i have seen other characters overcome such events, max's story was so extreme and the things that happened to her so despicable, that it almost seemed impossible that she would ever get back up. and yet she did.
the writers did a wonderful job of characterizing her here through her actions. even though she most likely has not recovered from the trauma, it helped me understand the strength that comes with being a survivor. it also helped me understand that horrible events like these do not have to break you.
