Excellent true crime series. Here is what you get when you don't go woke, exceptional TV. Please Apple, cut down Netflix already.
10/10
Taron Egerton keeps getting better. I feel like we're in for a lifetime body of work that will rival the best.
Absolutely amazing crime drama I only wish it had more episodes I loved every minute of it. Stellar acting from Taron Egerton I can't wait to see him in other stuff he's going to get busy from now. I'm going to go ahead and say it: Paul Walter Hauser gives the best acting performance of the year! Also that intro music plays in my head on repeat so good!
R.I.P. Ray Liotta
I just don't like Taron Egerton at all, he's smarmy to me and feels like he just wants you to know how superiorly jacked he is. Even his walk is the over exaggerated "I'm so muscular I have to wobble and hold my arms 5 feet away" kind of bone-head gym guy you hate to work out next to.
That being said, he does a good job in this, I cannot deny that. It's an obscure "mostly true" story. The real star is Paul Walter, not only does he look like a dead ringer for the guy he portrays but he really pulls off mentally challenged and creepy in a superior way.
really good show very "true detective" like jumping back and forth between timelines
The most ridiculous, amateurishly directed, cheapest TV show ever.
This show is actually nothing else than a show off of Taron Egerton. He's just flexing his muscles in every scene without any reason(?!). Why?! This isn't a superhero movie or a sports movie (such as Rocky). In those kind of movies flexing of the main character seems reasonable, but this story has nothing to do with the appearance or physical condition of the main character. It simply looks dumb and pointless.
On other websites people gave very high ratings for this show. I think those are paid or fake ratings from fake accounts. This show doesn't even deserve 2 minutes of watching. The entire show looks as if two kids from high school filmed each other with a cell phone. It doesn't even look like a real movie or TV show.
Ray Liotta is the only real actor in the show, but I think, he already regrets his decision about taking part in this "production".
Wow! Just wow! This is probably my second favourite crime show besides season 1 of true detective. There's a bunch of things True Detective does better but Black Bird absolutely stomps TD in terms of storytelling. The show is beautifully shot from the opening shot to the final closing shot, a lot of heart poured into each technical aspect.
At it's core Black Bird is a show about loss and redemption. Based on the true harrowing stories about Larry Hall, our main character is Jimmy Keene who is a drug dealer sent to get a confession out of Larry Hall for the crimes he committed. Through a series of beautifully crafted timelines, a harrowing series of crimes. The actors each give 120%, absolutely mesmerizing performances by Taron and Paul, and Ray Liotta too.
The show is pretty simple...yet it's so complex, I dont have quiet the vocabulary to express my fullest emotions about this show, so I'll try my best, please excuse me for my bad English.
First of all, Larry Hall is a terrible person, every crime he committed disgusts me, but you see the show does such a good job at not just spoon-feeding the audience on how bad Lary is, instead they give us...the audience a simple backstory to him too, his difficulties and for a moment you can do nothing but even feel a tiny bit of compassion to this monster. I mean his whole life, almost nothing has gone his own way, he wasn't born with the best circumstances, his parents wasn't really caring for him. The only person he could talk to or feel safe was with Gary his twin brother and later on Jimmy. Maybe...just maybe, Lary could've been a sweet caring guy, he just needed a little bit of attention, you can see that clear as day when he is conversing with Jimmy, he just needed someone to talk to. I'm not trynna say what Lary did was right or anything please don't get me wrong he got what he deserved in the end but just imagine how precious human life is and yet how so fragile we are. At the final few minutes, I ended up shedding a tear or two for both these characters, such a beautiful show.
Black Bird is one of the most gripping and intense series I have watched to date. Each second I could not keep my eyes off of it. I was either repulsed, upset or on the edge of my seat. Absolutely stellar performances all round, each actor deserves a huge round of applause. Taron Egerton is something special. 10/10
Paul Walter Hauser knocked this out of the park. His acting as Larry Hall was worth the watch on its own. One thing above all else stood out to me about his performance, and that was the actions with his hands. Adults with developmental and intellectual deficiencies such as this individual have a way about their hands, and Hauser executed this extremely well.
It wasnt bad. The music and score by Mogwai was on point, the acting by Paul Walter Houser was truly excellent, the story bones were intriguing but the overall execution was nothing special and at times both heavy handed and anticlimactic. Taron Egerton’s character was not nuanced enough imo. I’m not sure if that’s a miss on the writing, directing or acting - or a bit of each. Not terrible, but it took me out of the story a few times along with a couple other odd writing choices.
I understand why people are comparing this to True Detective S1, but for me it doesnt go far enough to be considered in the same tier. That said, it’s definitely not bad and is worth a watch if you are looking for a 6spot serial killer miniseries. I really appreciate the limited/miniseries approach and love to see more productions using that format.
Fairly middling in my opinion. First episode was Jimmy being an insufferable one-dimensional alpha male type. Last episode was rushed and had characters making out-of-character decisions. Scenes with the murdered girls were trying way too hard to make me feel something about them, and were entirely unnecessary. Middle episodes with Jimmy and Larry were good, I just wish there were more like those.
The source material for this could've been constructed much better by the writers. Frankly, I'm surprised that Dennis Lehane carried much of that workload. He's a much better writer than was presented in this mini-series. This very much had the feel of a made-for-TV movie, and given the content of the storyline, I think that it would've done much better as that type of presentation. There really wasn't enough story for six hours of a mini-series.
Taron Egerton's performance was uneven, and while Paul Walter Hauser put in his usual strong performance, the character he portrayed simply didn't have enough depth of material to draw from. There was something missing in the depiction. Both Sepideh Moafi and Greg Kinnear played interesting roles quite adeptly, and Robert Wisdom, in his limited screen time, was excellent, as usual.
I gave this a seven based on the interest of the true-crime aspect of the material, but if I were giving a rating based on how the entire mini-series was pieced together, I'd likely have given it a grade of six.
honestly not a bad mini series. The acting was second rate but it didn't spoil the show. Paul Hauser owned his part as Larry Hall, nobody else really sold me. the story however was interesting enough to keep me watching.
Excellent show. What makes it creepier is it's base on a true story. Oh Ray Loitta, he plays the main character (Jimmy) 's dad. No role Ray didn't master. This series is a definitely worth a watch!
A MUST NOT MISS SHOW - - - A local cop, who cares about his job and yearns for closure in a murder case, if not for the family, for himself. A well-educated FBI agent who's eager to permenantly snare a shit-bag serial killer by unconventional means. And a pompous, swaggering drug dealer who desperately wants a second chance and will do anything to get it.
This has got to be the 'sleeper' of the year! I had not heard/seen much about this in the way of advertising but saw this on Trakt. So glad I did. This true story was entertaining and chilling at the same time. Never really saw gory bloody or horrible murder scenes - but you knew they were there or happened. Well written for the screen and very well played out. Wished it had been more episodes. Dennis Lehane was the creator of this show. He also wrote the novel 'Gone Baby Gone' - which was made into a movie. Mr. Lehane's writing style is edge-of-your-seat and that is always entertaining and thought-provoking.
Taron Egerton did a great job portraying exactly what a spoiled, egotistical, drug lord, cop's kid would act like. The only other thing I can remember him as, is Elton John. Paul Walter Hauser - whom I cannot remember seeing in anything - did a fantastic (almost too fantastic) job of a psychopath serial killer. I will be looking for other things he's been involved in. Sepideh Moafi, Greg Kinnear, and Ray Liotta were also great in their roles as supporting cast members. Greg Kinnear is never a let down in any role he does. Sepideh Moafi easily pulled off her role. I can see her carrying a TV series someday or at least, a limited release series. And Ray Liotta, one of the best! May he rest in peace. Mr. Liotta's role was perfect for him as a retired cop who's love for his son was also what probably gave his son the spoiled, egotistical attitude that enabled him to easily slip into the life of being a drug lord.
I watched the documentary right after the show to feel more, It's impressive how good the show and characters are:
CNN Special Report: To Catch A Serial Killer (2014) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utl53v0pz5Y)
At the same time It's sad :anguished:
One of the best shows so far this year. This cast is something else. Taron Egerton, Paul Walter-Hauser, + Ray Liotta and Sepideh Moafi take this story to a very high level from the first episode to the last. Really enjoying Apple+ last few months. Severance, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Slow Horses and now Black Bird. Great content.
Excellent first episode, looks like another top notch show from apple.
This was a very good mini series well worth the watch. Paul Walter Hauser was amazing in his role, not that everyone else didn't do a good job, but he just nailed his performance.
Great performance by Pual Walter hauser
I had initially had this recommended to me from a friend and it didn't dissapoint, the acting was superb and the whole thing was put together really well
Outstanding series. Paul Walter, who played Larry Hall, did such a phenomenal job of being an antagonist. He really carried the show. You should see this show just to see his acting.
the fact that this is based on a true story and it's still this good! 9/10.
Paul Walter Hauser stole the show
Don't get me wrong, but these crime shows are totally dependent on how good the criminal is portrayed and Paul Walter played the role to perfection showing all the sides of Larry Hall. Taron was also good but his breakthrough didn't come till the final episode which in hindsight was the most important one. The conversations between Larry and Jimmy in the show are really fascinating and honestly you can try but you won't be able to take your eyes off. How every conversation brings you one step closer to figuring out the puzzle of Larry Hall is binge worthy experience. With shows like this and Severance, Apple Tv is definitely bringing it's A game
I loved Black Bird, Paul Walker Hauser shines with his interpretation of Larry Hall showing goodness and darkness in equal measure. The fifth episode reminded me at times of the movie The Lovely Bones.
There is a great constant suspense built in each episode. A sense of discomfort and unease.
Taron Eagerton is at the best I’ve ever seen him, finally a dynamic role.
This cast is straight up knockout. Love me some Taron Egerton who completely embodies the persona of his character, and Paul Walter Hauser brings something that is incredibly unique and honestly pretty odd, but it somehow works perfectly. Ray Liotta adds a heartfelt touch and the remaining cast all deliver exactly what they need to. The story is equally disturbing and fascinating, and the entire thing is supported by a consistent tone that is subtle yet compelling. I don't think it's perfect, but it's really, really good.

Can't stand listening to Hauser's voice in this.
The best series I have watched all year. Beautifully shot, more beautifully acted mini series, inspired by a gripping true crime story. It is gritty rather than flashy, and you can recognize the touch of Dennis Lehanne, probably my favorite crime Novelist. PLUS it is completely free of any Wokeness whatsoever. Back to a great story, no agenda/message/propaganda. MORE!!!!!
Really good show. The pacing was much better than the same types of shows with 8 and 10 episodes.
Real good example of what a slow burn drama should look like... walter and kinnear both did outstanding jobs.
This bud definitely I show worth watching. It’s normally not my type of show that I would seek out, but it kept popping up in highly rated shows, so my wife and I gave it a try. We got hooked right away.
I was wary of Egerton at first, but he and Hauser (plus supporting cast) really brought it. His emotional breakdown in the end was extremely compelling. I found myself unable to turn this one off.
Amazing!Amazing!Amazing!Worth watching and I highly recommend
Excellent acting and story, very well made.
Great show, tru story made it better
.horrible people out there
This one of most greatest mini series ever made
, like for real they made a masterpiece here and i mean it literally, Nowadays it's hard to find a perfection in a movie or series but here you go
it's definitely so great and makes you wanna rewatch it many times to focus with details of it
and for freaking sure the acting of paul Walter, he really made me believe that he is the real killer, i mean he is not acting! how he reached this level idk, I'm sad bc he won't take prizes for this acting but he definitely deserve, and also for sure Taron, He also did awesome job and makes wanna live as him xD he has a really good character for sure without bad habit's, else that he is really great, so yah
and all other people really did great acting, Soundtracks and filming colors were also great
every detail of it
so thank you for making this masterpiece i really enjoyed it
i wanna say more about it
but that's enough
definitely recommend
10 out of 10
[tv+] It's not exactly a prison drama or a true crime series, although its elements define it as such. Swimming against the tide, it relies on talentedly written, powerful, and insightful dialogues that ultimately construct a study of masculinity in confrontation with the feminine, drawing a parallel between the violent oppression of the killer and the socially institutionalized misogyny of the informant. It is a drama that works as an allegory of our society that wonders about the concept of masculinity.
One of the best shows you will watch this year.
This series is incredible in all aspects. if mindhunter had a twin series this would be it.
So I just saw episode 3 and this show is very good, especially if you like the True Crime series. If you do, do not miss this.
Been waiting on this, fingers crossed its gonna be a show I won't want to miss.

Not since True Detective's first season has a crime drama been so compelling, so intriguing, and gripping! In just the first four episodes, it's far exceeded my own expectations. All, and I mean every actor steps up 100% in their roles here which is rare, and last but not least, Ray Liotta contributes an excellent contribution to the overall consistent acting throughout the entire casting performance. I'm glad to see his (Ray Liotta's) final role be of such a fine caliber of a series!
