First five episodes are solid, but the remaining three are excellent. Bill Hader is fantastic.
Wow. Just wow. This is funny, deep, full of amazing performances, incredibly smart in how it's able to tackle very tough stuff while balancing lotos of great laughs, some very interesting drama and sudden, amazing moments of thrilling, unbearable tension. The last two episodes are out of this world.
Season 1 Review:
When I read the synopsis for this show it intrigued me right away. A depressed hitman from the Midwest who after a job in Los Angeles dreams of becoming an actor? That's such a unique idea for a TV show that feels different from anything I've seen before, and the premise alone alluded to something that sounded so hilarious yet interesting. So right away, I was hooked going into this and very eager to see what this show would be like. And while it did take some adjusting because the tone of the comedy was far sillier than I was expecting, the first season of Barry ended up being such a strong start for what would become one of my favorite shows of late. Bill Hader's performance is great right off the bat and he is perfect as Barry. The blend of tones and genres was really interesting as well. Not that there aren't other dark comedies out there, but this one feels especially unique and well-executed. The writing is also taken care of nicely, with the last couple of episodes really bringing everything together on a story and character level. The first season feels like a properly contained story that ends with a bang to draw you back for the next season. What holds it back for me a little is that I didn't love every character portrayal, some were less compelling and the humor of some characters was hit or miss for me. But overall, an infectious first season that made me craving more.
7.7/10 -- Good

One of my favourite tv shows is Dexter & this show shares a lot of that shows DNA. I think it balances nicely the violent undercurrent of the show with humour, which comes down to the good writing & Bill Haders` performance. Good work by the supporting cast also.
