I'm surprised people are still confused about the ending of the episode.
Grisha says that Humanity has not perished and there are people outside of the walls living in luxury.
There is a whole modern world out there (1940 era) the people inside the walls don't know about technologies such as cameras, etc.
Subtle hints were given since the beginning of anime:
1. Black liquid drank by Reiner, Berthold and Zeke (coffee)
2. They call Ape titan as "Beast titan" because they don't know about apes or monkeys. Ymir says: "What's that monkey boi upto" to Reiner in around Season 2 and Eren gets confused about what were they talking about.
3. Ymir knows about the ancient language.
4. Grisha comes from the outside, at the end of Season 3 Part 1.
5. The baseball stance of Zeke in "Perfect Game" episode. People inside walls don't know about Baseball.
6. Erwin's father and Erwin questioning if people existed outside the walls.
7. Reiner and Bertholdt want to go back to their homeland.
and a lot more other things that I cannot recall at the moment.
Here we go, boys. The real Attack on Titan has officially just begun! 'Tis gonna be a wild ride.
Finally reached the basement, and they confirmed what we probably all suspected at this point, there are other people living beyond the walls, loved the ending
Aww… I feel bad for Erwin. He never got to see the answer to his question, even though it does get answered from that cellar.
My theory from what we've seen so far is: The people outside is the world WE know IRL, Jäger is a German name, it means Hunter; Judging from the band Grisha and his sister wore, and the fact that they're in a walled zone. I can only presume they're Jews in WW2 Germany.
Little by little. It feels like the first king is the true villain. I think the power of Titans is known IRL, but the first king wanted to play dictator and have his own little kingdom. So he created the walls and all we know. That's why the War Chief told Eren that he'll "save" him another time. Which means, all the people inside the walls live an imaginary and secluded life inside the walls.
What I still don't know, is why Betrolt and Reiner said their first motive was to exterminate everyone inside the walls, and not actually "save" them?
Damn, that background music with the flashbacks were really to the point, brilliant!

56 damn episodes damn later we damn find out what’s damn in the damn basement.
It feels like the pacing has changed lately, with things getting increasingly drawn out as the producers try and build suspense...but I think they have gone to far, adding in predictable hooks and delays to string things out for 24 minutes...
But obviously I am going to keep watching !
