[7.2/10] Once again I’m just not a big fan of the main story in this one. The whole bit with Michael claiming to be a “nice guy” while trying to get out of his commitment to Maggie is kind of hokey. And while it’s nice to see Mr. Show alums Jay Johnston and Jerry Minor in action together, the whole baby switcheroo thing is more convoluted than clever. All this business with Maggie is just not my cup of tea, even if the final twist is amusing. (Wonder if they’ll ever address that in Season 5.)
But I just love all the business with Buster. For one thing, the way he makes jokes about his own seal-based hand amputation, producing uncomfortable laughter in everyone else, and then flipping out when Michael tries to do it too is a laugh riot. And good lord, the whole “I’M A MONSTER” routine is one of the funniest bits in the show. Tony Hale is just tremendous.
The rest of the family is in great form too. GOB feeling guilty about setting loose the seal responsible, and coming clean, only to get a hook in his behind is a minor but amusing story. The overly literal doctor (who says that Buster is “all right”) is a treat every time. And I like our first glimpse into Maeby as a movie producer. Plus, Lucille praying for God to take GOB’s hand this time, and Michael’s “I don’t think God’s gonna take that call.”
Last, but not least, I really liked the running gag of how George Michael kept having to see jaw-dropping stuff. This episode really is a testament to Michael being as terrible as the rest of his family.
Overall, the main story was fairly weak in my book, but there’s still some good stuff here.
