I hope all the good actors are waiting on the ship in stasis otherwise series 2 if there even is one will be another load of garbage.
Yeeeeehaaaaa!!! Well, they had my attention with the artifact, then it lands and starts growing crystals ala "Annihilation", and then, I realized the protagonist was being played by none other than Katee (Kara "Starbuck" Thrace) Sackhoff and I nearly lost my mind. It's about time the "powers that be" put her back where she does her best work, that is, in deep space. Stay tuned, and strap in, cuz, it's prolly gonna be a bumpy ride! But what fun it should be going along for it.
This is the "Prometeus school of little space explorer" all over again.
They have the technology, they have the know-how, but for some reason they put the worst possible people in charge of the most important mission of human history.
It's like NASA put highschoolers inside Apollo 11.
Why writers can't write a good sci-fi show without making people complete incompetents?
I miss SG1
Season One thoughts :
The Good - Decent special effects . Some CGI looks fine , other shots look like they were rendered on a Commodore Amiga .
The Bad - Terrible acting abounds , especially Katee Sackhoff . In this , she plays a poor man's Ripley (Aliens) . Her character Niko certainly didn't fall far from the Starbuck tree . The difference from Starbuck here is that Niko has more than three emotions . Unfortunately , Sackhoff's acting style doesn't support such range , her facial expressions and movements all are so contrived and fast changing I can't take my eyes off of her for the wrong reasons , it's too distracting . It's similar to watching Jim Carrey's exaggerated expressions as Ace Ventura , though Ace was always meant to be over the top funny and not dramatic . Niko and her husband have zero chemistry , he acts like somebody who's uncomfortable around children and gives off a weird uncomfortable vibe in scenes with his daughter . None of the characters are likable except William/Samuel Anderson who , as always , is a pleasure to watch .
The Ugly - The cinematography is dated , circa 2004 . Identical to Battlestar Galactica with loads of shaky-cam and awkward excessive snap zooming . The cinematographer from Another Life also worked on Battlestar Galactica so that explains that .
The music is amateur hour . Every time the cheesy music starts playing , it signals the viewer that something juvenile is coming .
I like just about anything Sci-Fi , I was a fan of the Battlestar Galactica reboot , but it's going to be a chore to watch any more of this mess . I'm hoping the aliens end humanity swiftly so that Netflix can spend the money on something more deserving .
Edit I managed to finish the series . The Earth story line is boring and illogical . The space story line is only slightly watchable with at least some action here and there . Both are filled with stupid actions and WTF moments . The writers should all be fired . I couldn't possibly nitpick everything wrong with the writing , there's simply too much going on here to even start . This show is second rate in every possible way .
One of the worst Sci-Fi shows ever. It's Sci-Fi for people who don't like Sci-Fi. Usually, science fiction likes to engage your mind, however in this show, if you turn on your head for even a second you will be imminently put off by how nothing the characters do makes any sense...
The antagonistic XO behaves like he has a bi-polar disorder. In one scene he's well adjusted in other he's a raving lunatic. It's really hard to believe he wasn't booted from the military before. Even harder to believe that he had command of his own ship for any period of time.
He starts a mutiny at the first serious disagreement with Katee While they still have communication with Earth. Usually, the mutiny would take place when the crew is isolated from the outside. Here they just could have presented the point of disagreement to the higher-ups on earth, and they would have decided what action they want their subordinates to take.
The XO later tries to kill Katee in an overdramatized scene that looked like a red herring for him trying to kill her. You know those scenes when someone bad is about to happen but you know it wouldn't? Like Sansa wanting to execute Arya and switching to Littlefinger in the last possible moment? Only in this scene he actually tries to kill her. [Expectations Subverted!]. So Katee kills him in self-defense. Yet in the next episodes, Katee doesn't mention to the crew that it was self-defense. She just says she killed him. Because he didn't follow orders or some shit like that.
Then some of the crew go to an alien planet. To mine oxygen rocks in a tiny cave. And for some reason, they think it's a good idea to take their masks off, on an alien planet. In a predictable fashion, the crew gets infected with an alien organism. For which, they magically find a cure in the last possible minute before they all decide to kill themselves.
I only watched the first 3 episodes. Couldn't take it anymore.
Also, It seems the level of technology in this world is an incomplete contradiction to the level of challenges the characters face. Most of the issues facing the crew seem like they could have been easily solved by their current technology.
Also, they have a real AI on board of the ship. Thinking, self-aware artificial intelligence. Only it's the most useless AI in the history of AI.
He doesn't seem to to have any of the advantages you would expect a super-intelligent being to have. Katee a lowly human can manually pilot the ship better than him. His only advantage seems to be that he can read the ship's sensors. All things else he's completely useless.
Bad acting, poor storyline and each time, the miraculous solution at the last second that saves everybody.
Won't watch season 2
Started watching this because I wanted to see how bad it was. And damn. The crew on this ship acts like like little children. And where does they control the ship? Don't they know chair exists? How they control the monitors when the ship is rocking around is hilarious. And they made all the display UI graphic on MS Word! Can't believe shows like this get a new season...
I watched all 10 episodes, and this is clearly a sci-fi series for the new generation of touchy-feely politically correct wimps that have crushed the social fabric of humanity. The only element missing is having these characters take regular selfies and it would be complete.
I didn't hate it, the story line takes a lot of liberties, but the special effects are decent, and they've come up with some creative future tech or explanations thereof - like how dark matter is a key component in future tech. There is FAR too much drama, and I eventually started skipping over those sequences because they really add nothing to the story. As another reviewer pointed out, its like a bunch of petulant teenagers were put on a space ship and let loose on each other. Skipping over all these sequences almost halves the run-time, and results in a better sci-fi experience in my opinion.
There is a decent story plot, with lots of possibility, but they really could have done a better job of filling it out... a times I thought maybe this is a modern take on Star Trek, but then too many Star Trekkie things happened too often, and then I thought it was a sci-fi take on Grey Anatomy or Pretty Little Liars or some other teen hormone fueled cat fight.
Well, this is a real bad one.
Totally unbelievable bad writing/script.
Money wasted...
I got 2 black eyes from the facepalm this series gave me. Still, I caught my attention, but man this show is frustating. If the writing/acting doesn't improve, i'm not watching S02
what would you expect joining actors of such calibre like gipsy(flash), clark kent(super girl), and goku(dragonball evolution) and kate(anger management)? a roller coaster of shitty acting and lazy writing.
The only reason I tortured myself through all ten poorly written, badly acted and horribly CGI’d episodes was to rid this pile of garbage from my “continue watching” list on Netflix. The quality of Netflix Originals is in a downward spiral lately...
there's nothing worse than a science fiction show failing the science bit.
The second season was significantly more interesting. Which is also what happened to Stargate: Universe, as I predicted in my earlier review. I would kind-of like to see more but I doubt that is happening...
But to me it seemed that it kind-of spent too much time in odd places, some important parts were skipped over and some less important ones got dragged on for simply too long. I suspect this the last season that they had to cram a lot of things in.
The second season was FAR better. First was about ppl in space pretty much, astronauts and their problems. The second was about life which is everywhere. I love different species, planets and the last message ?! Ok, it was cliche but it was beautiful and really unexpected seeing what happened this season. I teared up and I love it !
The first season was barely acceptable. It simply missed the mark on too many levels.
However, season 2 was much much better which makes the overall show pretty good. Based on the season 2 ending, I do not expect there to be a season 3. A 3rd+ season would start to look something like Babylon 5 or DS9.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
I got flashbacks to Stargate: Universe watching this. Incredibly similar, in the same way, the first half of the first season has been really quite bad. It'll probably get canceled the same way Stargate Universe did, when it was just getting good.
this show is terrible. it seems like they had to be politically correct so threw in transgender, gays, 3somes, love stories around 20-year-olds, AI fucking humans, the list goes on................. I am shocked they haven't included teenager and romances into the show (yet)
I liked Katee Sackhoff in Battlestar Galactic a, and I was truly hoping this was going to be a SciFi show I can get into.
Seriously. WTF is this crap. This is a 90201 space romp. No continuity, no research done on any scientific level. Horrible! Katee, good luck with this one, you're gonna need it!
If you are here to see if the show is worth the view, I say give the first two episodes a whirl. Don't say I didn't warn you. 1/10
Netflix really stinks now. This show has poor acting, a leftist theme, and works social justice warrior characters and plots into the series. I'm so done with Netflix and almost everything it produces. Canceling.
I'm a big Syfi fan, and what do I think about this series? It's BAD BAD BAD!!!!
The actors are OK, but the storyline is really crap and the graphics is the same level of 1998!
Actors: 9
Storyline: 2
Graphics: 2
Had the potential to be a good show. Its producers decided that wasn't a good idea. The script appears to be written as a high school drama project. The characters are weak and predictable. The acting is appalling. One season of this drivel, is already one season too many.
I binged Another Life - not because it was amazing, but because I wanted to get it over with.
While the entire concept of the show isn't new, it still provides an interesting scenario to explore - which is one of the main reasons I was looking forward to and decided to watch all episodes, just to see where this was going. I think the general direction is good, there are just many small things all across the board that have been rather disappointing.
My main issue with this show is the writing. It becomes very clear that this mission is extremely important - yet, the main crew's behaviour is quite immature and inadequate, their decision making often is self-centered, emotional and idiotic. At first, one might think this is due to their young age, but it becomes obvious it's actually just them (their backups are way more professional).
The dynamic between characters is really weird at times, the way they react to each other is sometimes quite irritating. Maybe the writers wanted to explore the psychological effects of such a mission - but the way it is portrayed really isn't enjoyable. The acting in some instances feels over the top, then again in some scenes characters are way too tame/indifferent - this random behaviour made it difficult to immerse myself, I often wondered "where is this coming from?" or "why is there hardly any reaction?". It feels like the writers couldn't decide how certain characters should react in certain contexts so they just went with whatever would provide the most drama. It's a lazy approach imho.
The story itself and all the little things that impact the mission are only designed to create obstacles so the crew has something to do during their journey. Most of their issues are self-imposed (due to their behaviour) and while their solutions can be considered realistic, all of it feels forced. It's like the writers had a rough idea how to get to the final episode and then didn't know what to do with the time in-between, so they invented a number of situations to provide some sort of development, all of which is rather irrelevant in the larger context.
In general, the actors have done an ok job - I think they did their best with the material at hand. If anything, the writers weren't really consistent and tried too hard to make this an unnecessarily over-dramatic journey. As a viewer, I haven't really gained any new insights, I haven't really experienced a gripping story, and couldn't really get involved emotionally - all of which made it really difficult to immerse myself. I'm sure that films like Interstellar , The Martian, Arrival, shows like The Expanse, or books like Blindsight (by Peter Watts) have set the bar higher, so maybe that is one of the reasons I felt Another Life was lacking in multiple areas.
Overall, the reason why this show was disappointing: it has so much potential, the foundation for a great series is right there - it's just wasted on silly things or attempts to mimic really popular films/shows, thus it's a mixed bag of everything resulting in an underwhelming experience.
Gave up part way through episode 1. It's just unbelievably bad.
I always wanted to be an astronaut...but if this show is anything to go by I am not even close to HOT enough. (it's obviously the prime, perhaps only, criteria).
I'm a fan of sci-fi shows but not a fan of this show.
Although it was fun to watch, there wasn't any other good reason for someone to watch it.
PROS: The visuals are not terrible.
CONS: Oh my god, the script...the writing...the acting... All of them are very bad. Especially the writing. Very few times in my life, I've encounter such a weak and naive script. I mean those plot holes, pretty much, cover the entire plot. I was facepalming many times during an episode. Are the writers even writers? I guess they were busy putting weak "politically correct" script elements scattered all over without any true purpose. Nothing, and I mean, NOTHING makes any sense.
Stop ruining Science Fiction. Fire all your crappy millennial writers, and get some adults on the payroll.
The actors are capable, but the writing is crap and extremely unrealistic.
Also, nothing says crappy like low budget special effects in 2021.
At it's core, this show is about a rag-tag group of emotionally dysregulated crew members utterly and totally psychologically unfit for duty.
This is just terrible. Tribble writing, terrible acting, terrible directing. No science, just a bunch of unlikeable characters doing stupid things.
Katee is bait to lure you in. No doubt there are people who like this but from the rating I take it they are a minority.
The show got just confirmed for a second season. Can you believe it?
Cant' remember the last time I dropped a show after just one episode. I didn't even make it to the end of the first epsiode. It's just unbelievably bad.
Usually when you watch a bad show you can see some good things in it. Maybe one actor was really good or the cinematography was beautiful or the soundtrack or something. There is nothing in this one. Just nothing. Don't even get me started on the writing or dialogue.
Why Netfliy, why? Are you that desperate to have content now that you are losing shows to other streaming services? You got a lot of good shows. Focus on them and don't just try to pump up the number of shows by any means necessary. 1 good show a month is better than 5 bad ones.
Well I liked it very much.
The first season is basically the polar opposite of Star Trek: a bunch of immature hotheads fucking up in space. Which can be kind of funny but most of the time it feels trashy but still manages to keep it kinda watchable.
At least the most annoying characters get killed off.
There are also some really lovable ones but unfortunately they don't rly get a chance to shine
The 2nd season is where things start to get better which makes this a mediocre show. Not the best but not exactly a waste of time either.
Stopped watching after 2 episodes. Kids in space acting like children.
How this have more than 10% approval rating is just crazy..
To fight the a threat against earth they send a bunch of mentally unstable people that completely ignore the chain of command.. They run on emotions and do whatever they feel like for the moment..
Not to mention the so called "science"..... Shooting a laser at solar-sails, both attached to the same object, does not push the object forward... It's like someone that only took social-sciences wrote the thing.
Hope the series is dead and never comes back.
American-centered, scientifically bullshit, but otherwise entertaining. I personally don't like how many modern (but old Farscape too...) scifi serials are so centered around emotions and how the protagonist make such unprofessional decisions based on them (like the mutiny) - it can be seen on the difference between Star Trek Discovery and the other older ones for example. I wonder why would someone choose a crew like this on such an important mission - no one better was available?
The logic and manipulation which the Ikaia uses don't make much sense either, especially with the advanced technology they are using. And if their technology is sensitive to neutrinos (if we look away from the fact that neutrinos are everywhere...), I don't believe they wouldn't have sensors and technology to avoid them when traveling through space.
Aside from this mishmash, which I think is like in Battlestar Galactica, I like some of the effects and using technology concepts based on today´s technology, concepts, and customs.
What I think is music sometimes - in my taste, not the best one is chosen for some situations and sometimes it is used to build up an atmosphere in a way that feels weird.
Watching last episode of season 2, soo bad the whole series, don't waste your time.
I wonder why this hasn't been cancelled after the 1st season. Overall 5 of 10.
Love Katie Sachoff but this show is really not good. It's extremely clunky and it's really difficult to watch. I feel like some of the better actors on the show had to tone it down so that they could fit in with the other actors.
Acting on this show is horrendous. Not sure if that's because sackoff sucks and can't act and had to find people that couldn't upstage her or the director sucks . Really, earth is in danger and THIS is the fucking crew they pick? Seriously who wrote this shit!??
I'm not going to lie, I really like to hate-watch this show. As in, it's so bad I like to watch it out of spite because I can't believe how bad it is.
Boring show with a boring ending. Skip this crap.
Seriously we saw all of that in a dozen different sci-fi shows. It's too long, too predictable. Boring.
One episode was enough. I usually give shows at least two, even if they are bad. I want to give them a chance to redeem themselves. But this was so awful I couldn't manage it. Stupid people writing about smart people is never a good idea. Everyone in this show behaves like an imbecile. That tells you a lot about the writers. And the acting is awful too. Unsalvageable... hence one episode.
ATTENTION
This is a porn show ( literally and metaphorically ) and not a Sci-fi one.
You 've been warned!
What a waste of time. Bad acting, cast, story, etc. Move on, nothing to see here.
too much overacting for my taste
If you stick with it for the long haul, you may find it to be a good series but it is unevenly paced. Sometimes it almost grinds to a halt (S1E4). However, it has moments of crescendo (S2E4 and S2E9). There is a good ensemble cast. Katee Sackhoff has her hands full anchoring the dramatic rhythm. Although the episodes can range from a 5 (meh) to an 8 (great), I give the series an overall 7 (good) out of 10. [SciFi Drama]
It's so bad but you want to keep watching.
i just love the way Katee bring to live her characters
the expression
the way she speaks
well, it feels so real
good 2 season. i needed to gave a 7 on this
its a good serie to watch with few drama around
I hardly comment in here…
But I had to say that the end of season two was kinda perfect ending, at least for me. If this drags on like for another 3 or 4 season its gonna feel like supernatural all over again. (I know! Not the same subject but the feelings are.)
Also, when they talked about who made the alchaian (I don’t think that’s how it’s written!) that got me thinking… I already saw this? Where have I saw this? And then… :exploding_head: Battlestar Galactica all over again!
Guess you guys knows the feeling or some of you do.
About the time it got out i tried to watch and quit after 5 min. Found it again few months later and noticed it would get a 2nd season and gave it another shot. I really really like sci-fi thrillers and that was what got me through the first 2 episodes. They are really bad. No redeeming qualities. Awful. But it gradualy picks up, bit by bit over the season and by the end we have a decent to good sci-fi show even when the aliens become a bit cliche. Watch it only if you´re a old school sci-fi lover with nothing else going on.
Uneven Sci Fi. Best when Katee Sackhoff's not Being a Smiley Em:grin:ji. Would Happily Space the 3 characters who were Rom-huffing. But Generally liked it. Better than Hug-Trek anyway. (Which is Not Saying Much)
This is what happens when you try to turn a movie into a tv show. The story becomes diluted to fit 7.5 hours of screen time when instead it should be 2.5 hours. A lot would be scrapped, but a lot is trivial in this show. Take the "Guilt Trip" episode for example; the entire backstory felt like filler.
Moreover, the writers did a poor job of making the story compelling and the suspense is weak. It doesn't pull you or make you want to watch more. When I watched it I didn't care about what was going to happen either.
Even if all that was set right, nothing can make up for Katee Sackhoff's portrayal of emotions. It is awkward and unnatural. I can't tell if this was poor acting or poor direction.
The CGI was alright though.
Worst cast in the world
This show is so horrible!!!
been waiting for something like this :) if they film season 2 i just hope they wont bring more love drama than there is, like other shows.
I watched the whole series and found it to be a good show!
Is it the best thing since sliced bread?
NO......
The CGI is good and in some cases brilliant, but then there are other times it’s almost laughable.
The acting is a little hit and miss, but it’s not as bad as some have stated.....
Yes 4 of the episodes are pants, with typical padding to make the story go a long way, but most shows are like that.....
No awards will be given to anyone for this show, but it does diserve a second season
Cheesy series, and I'm not going to finish the current episode I'm on.
La serie en si no está mal, pero le falta ese "algo" que hace que te enganches a la serie
Scooby Doo and the gang in OUTER SPACE. The young and the restless experimenting PCP... Why am I still watching it?!?
Wasted a lot of time watching this! Don't want to lose any more time reviewing this. Suffice to say just DO NOT watch this.
Not sure yet what to make of it. Wonky Special Effects, odd / unusual crew dynamic (not sure if refreshing or just forcibly "different" for the sake of "novelty"), somewhat lukewarm storyline. For now, it's more like the proverbial car crash I can't take my eyes off of, but it's still decent enough to pass some time.
I've binged it just now.
The pilot script was so lame, all the discussions are ridicolous.
They dropped some familiar faces from other shows, which was a plus point.
The main character's facial expressions are over the top annoying, i hated her...
The only thing kept me with it, that i love YA series, and i hoped it will
be better. It was finally exciting enough to finish,
and i think i will watch the second season i guess.

Baffling how this is going to have a second season.
