It's very hard to review or rate Alphas, given the show's genre and actual content: It had several weak moments, and not always did I find it in myself to relate or like the characters.
Despite that, the worldbuilding was rich and full of potential. There you have those very difficult and different characters, with their abilities and conflicts.
Unfortunately, it seemed like the creators and writers weren't always certain what to focus on the most (or failed at it) making it hard to build up an involved viewership.
None of the characters got the attention they would have deserved over more than their respective episodes, which is quite tragic, given how their abilities could very well be translated to actual mental diseases and conditions like PTSD, clinical depression, mania, Compulsive Obsessive Disorder, ADHD, Autism, and so on.
Truthfully, the show played it very straight: The obvious ships, the obvious (inter/re)actions, the obvious conflicts. Few subtle remarks, that lead to even less subtle discussions and missions. The most interesting antagonists never appeared again, and the protagonists couldn't quite manage to redeem themselves.
Yes, Alphas was a good show with a remarkable concept, but I feel as if the writers tried too hard to please a mainstream viewership and eventually forgot that the show might have sold itself, with the great cast (oh, Mennell and Cartwright, how I miss you two), solid worldbuilding and almost crazy potential to play around. - Or maybe the blunt and grey atmosphere was intentional. If so, well.. I understand why some people might not have enjoyed the show enough to watch it every week..
In short: They didn't do bad, but they could have done better. While I feel bitter about it at the moment, I can somewhat understand Syfy's decision to cancel the show. Though the cliffhanger was evil and I demand a Moonlight-ish post about what would have happened in Season 3. Thank you. ;)
Had some hopes for this show but it keeps getting worse and worse. Stupid super power villains, a main story line that nobody cares for. I would be surpised if this doesn't get cancelled.
Totally agree with ratanparai, felt the same after the pilot and stopped watching, now I can't wait till next monday xD
Gary rocks!
Pretty enjoyable, Gary (the autistic guy) brings some humour to the show as well.
Man this show is not so bad.
Gave up after less than 15 minutes. Acting & Editing are terrible.
The series "Alphas" is about a team of people with some unusual abilities. They are not superheroes, because, their abilities are not supernatural but explained by neurological mutations! If you're a fan of intelligent fantasy and sci-fi, or simply of good TV drama, I strongly recommend you give it a chance to pull you in.
enjoyed this dam its finished mmmm
See too many times in other show
The End ist shit!!!!
They should continue it!
this show was descent
A shame it got cancelled.
Just when it was gettin good... Syfy goes and cancels it. What a shame..
Syfy Cancels 'Alphas'. It will not be returning to the network after the two-season run: http://j.mp/VnZCcF
empty characters you can´t relate, poor powers, weak storyline, boring missions...
The pilot was indeed quite underwhelming, but it gets better with every episode.
Stared ok, but now each episode feels like a filler til it gets canned. Just no flow or gripping story lines
I don't even know what this show is all about anymore... Just lame characters with lame powers. Lame plot and in the end of half season episodes appears that Nina pushes at people. 1st season was good 2nd, mueh... Storyline going almost to nowhere.
Gary is the uber alpha!
The first episode is : Nah, not so good. But after that, it gets better and better. And now one of my favorite Show. After Sheldon (Big bang theory) Gary is my 2nd favorite TV-show character :)
[PS. plz Dont judge this show after watching the first episode only. ]
Que saudade dessa série
The show is actually pretty decent. I look forward to each episode as the show does get better and better. Now i just wish they kept Summer Glau as a series regular, she was eye popping gorgeous in her guest role. haha :]
The pilot was alright and then (after the Dr. shaved his awesome beard) it gets worse and worse and worse.
The 5th episodes sets the top for me - there's a villian who's special power is to like people first, then cancel the (facebook) friendship and then the people get cooked - Uhhh yeah.
Most of these special powers are pretty damn stupid. Like this autistic kid (which is well played and nice to watch) but his power is not only see the electromagnetic waves, he even can stop and control them with his fingers in the air. Really???
Well produced show, but not well thought out.
My opinion: the only reason to watch this show is Nina (Laura Mennell).
-show dropped-
First episode was meh, but it keeps getting better and better. The autistic guy is just awesome!
I just watched the pilot and I must say it isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be.
+1, I couldn't even finish it...
Seeing pilot was enough... i see "canceled" in this shows future.
