[7.2/10] Perfectly good season premiere. I enjoyed seeing everyone’s dream and the show does the pretzel logic of it all quite well. The episode does a nice job at establishing everyone’s dreams before (a.) turning them into nightmares and (b.) smashing them together, which is a plus. Jake dreaming of being back with his dad and brother worked as a way to show him having a certain desire for family before turning into a fear of being old. Finn getting to fly was a nice way of showing his desire for freedom while then tying into his anxieties about PB and the “teeth falling out” bad dream trope. And there’s something about BMO directing a play which speaks to the performative aspects of a character who wants to be human, only to reveal a fear that he’ll be seen as a fake.
The episode mixes all of this up nicely, and having the reveal be that the orb turned their dreams into nightmares so that it could communicate with them and, naturally, ask for some bananas is a nicely Adventure Time solution to the problem. Overall, a fun standalone ep after the major miniseries.
