The movie didn't had a great impact on me (it was too much "hey look what I can do" stuff).
But the Soundtrack is just KICK-ASS/BRILLIANT/EXCELLENT - OMG!
Standing ovations to Henry Jackman for creating something more than just a simple action score.
Really solid, and definitely one the best third acts in superhero films. I always love when they integrate real world events into these movies. It’s one of the few prequels that builds interestingly on the lore of the original films without ever feeling redundant, it’s very satisfying to see the pieces fall into place. They nailed the casting of Magneto and Charles Xavier once again, even when these movies got bad you could always count on McAvoy and Fassbender elevating them with their performances. The rest of the team is fine (very nice to see Jennifer Lawrence give an actual performance in these movies), they’re clearly appealing to a teenager demographic with the casting, which leads to some odd choices with the direction and dialogue, but they keep it fun overall. The focus is always on the characters and setting up the team, rather than romance or melodrama. There’s definitely some stuff in there that I’d cut (e.g. romance between Raven and Hank), but it’s pretty well paced overall. The excellent villain and score are also major contributors to the film working as well as it does (why didn’t they keep this Magneto theme going forward?). However, looking at the film as a whole, it does feel somewhat underbudgeted. There’s obvious cheapness to the some of the effects work and it doesn’t feel like enough of Matthew Vaughn’s voice comes through visually. His signature shows up in some of the scene transitions, but his style is clearly neutered here, particularly during a lot of the so-so action sequences. Nevertheless, it’s a very easy recommendation and easily one of the best in the franchise.
7/10
Good but not great. This X-Men origin story focuses primarily on Magento and Professor X and their first meeting and subsequent relationship. This is the strongest asset of the movie but it also features some good action especially the showdown between the X-Men and the U.S. and Soviet militaries.
Magneto played by Michael Fassbender is the star of the film. His backstory is very interesting and his obsession with Sebastian Shaw portrayed with nearly equal verve by Kevin Bacon drives the movie.
Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) is a stabilizing presence. He's a regular big brother to the rest of the X-Men recruits. Those other X-Men are a bit of a bore and they all have their special moment to show off their powers some of which are okay but most are underwhelming.
There are all sorts of alternative messages cultural and political that I think are being delivered throughout but I chose to ignore the metaphors and take it at face value. That helped me enjoy it more I think.
"I've been at the mercy of men just following orders. Never again."
After X-Men: The Last Stand, people thought mutants were done for. Then X-Men: First Class came out and it was pretty refreshing to see it in a new light. While I did enjoy this, Michael Fassbender is the standout by a mile. Wish we had a Magneto film made just like Logan.
Flyin by cryin hahaha ppphhhffrrrrttt
Glad to see that the franchise can work without Wolverine front and center, you wouldn't know it from past movies.
This movie could be so much better, I am not saying it is a bad one but here is THE one point that made me feel extremely uncomfortable:
This part is going to sound like a pure rant mostly because someone has to explain to me how the hell Darwin's death is within logic? Let me get you see the serious flaw of logic here. Darwin's supernatural power is making him to adapt to anything. He can literally adapt to everything and anything. One time his powers realized that it would be so dangerous to fight with the Hulk so they ended up teleporting him to another country. Another time he became a cosmic ball of energy and then rematerialized as a human being to you know.. not die? And another time he was shot with a gun that was made to kill anything that has a nervous system, and you know what he did, turned into a freaking sponge. He literally touched a goddess of death once and his powers turned him into a death god himself to prevent his death. And after all of these, seeing him die because of a pathetic ball of kinetic energy from Shaw? Seriously guys, am I the only person who sees the flaw here? They killed the mutant whose power is about nothing but SURVIVAL. And Shaw says "Adapt to this"?? well, he should have been able to! I will never get over his death, in my mind he turned into an energy ball and ascended to another existence so he would not have to deal with this nonsense.. okay, rant over.
Thank you for reading my rant.
Finally...a movie that is worthy of the X-Men tag.
Excellent acting, impressive storytelling, and a rather good director usually make a good movie. X-Men:The First Class is no exception. Matthew Vaughn has made something this franchise really deserved AND needed...
There are only a few things that kind of annoyed me with this one. When Beast become...well...Beast, he looks weird...very weird. The second is that January Jones as Emma Frost is just put in there as eye candy. She has no real impact on anything. But hell...I won't complain too much about that. She's in her underwear most of her on-screen time...
Despite the above-mentioned faults, I really love this movie. If you haven't seen it, you really should. Even my better half likes this one, and she usually doesn't like superhero movies.
a good comic movie but 20th century fox needs to give xmen back to marvel
nooo... why did it turn out that way? eric and charles would have been a great team!!!
"X-Men: First Class" totally rocked my world! It's hands down one of my favorite X-Men movies. I mean, who can resist a good origin story, right? Seeing how it all began with Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr was just pure cinematic gold. The action was intense, the characters were complex and engaging, and the chemistry between the cast members was off the charts. It's got everything you could want in a superhero flick and more. Count me in as a hardcore fan of "X-Men: First Class"!
Yes there's some pacing issues, Yes the dialogue is cheesy but it really doesn't take the whole movie with it. I had forgotten how good the twists were, threw something new at you at such a random time.
To be more specific, 7.5
I love this movie overall
Pros: Gets the Xavier/Erik dynamic really well
Beast and Raven get good arcs as well
THE THEMES!!!!!!!!!
Cons: has some narmy moments
Kevin Bacon is kind of phoning it in I guess. I dont notice that as much as most people but its a thing
January Jones sucks as one of my favorite comic characters, Emma Frost. Once again I dont think she's as bad as a lot of ther people seem to but its noticeable
Darwin is wasted
i liked this even more on the rewatch tbh michael fassbender has chemistry with anything with a pulse
Possibly my favorite X-Men movie. It has its flaws but I usually like origin stories the most and this time it's no exception. The story between Charles and Erik is just beautiful. Raven and Hank are also very interesting characters.
Young charles can be a bit of a dick but he's still cool.
Also: The soundtrack was awesome!
"Would you like to see one more magic trick?"
"Get in the car."
My favourite so far.
'X-Men: First Class' is great fun. I felt entertained throughout with nothing bothering me whatsoever, with the score and the cast particularly standing out. I will say it starts stronger than it ends, but that's not to say it isn't all enjoyable because it certainly is.
James McAvoy is very good as Charles Xavier, while Michael Fassbender is excellent as Erik Lehnsherr. Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence and Kevin Bacon were three others who I liked watching too. Back to the score, it's tremendous - some parts reminded me of the outstanding theme of television's 'The Crown'.
I was feeling the decline across the preceding four releases, but thankfully this regains the series' footing and then some. Intrigued to see where it goes from here. Onwards to 'The Wolverine'*! *watching in release order
/copied directly from my Letterboxd review\
I have watched all the "X" movies before but this time I decided to do with the chronological order.
I already liked this movie a lot but as an origin movie it works even better. You see where everything started, how they got to know each other. Especially the relationship between Charles and Eric gives the later movies in the timeline more depth. Especially Eric get's to look at from an angle that actually makes you feel sympathetic for him. You asks yourself if you would have done something different. There isn't the hard line of good or evil. McAvoy and Fassbender do have great chemistry and Kevin Bacon plays a great villain. Alltogether I really don't see a weak spot in the cast.
I can't say how true everything is to the comics as I never read them but this movie has a really good story. Putting it into a historic timeframe of events which actually did happen gives it a nice extra touch. The movie still looks awesome, which isn't always a given with 10 year old CGI movies. Nothing looks dated and could easily have been from today. I also did like the Bond-ish feel it has.
Overall really entertaining and among the better movies of the superhero genre.
I like that magnetos origin story has to do with vengeance against nazis
Incredible Movie, very well done
With Fassbender and Lawrence it raised a few levels on the X-Men franchise.
I still find the young up-and-coming mutants in the movie extremely cheesy, but apart from that, the filmmaker did pretty much everything right when they restarted the series. The main actors were well chosen. The basic mood is somewhere on a serious drama level with a good portion of humor.
Basically, the film lives through James McAvoy and above all Michael Fassbender. Especially Fassbender gives Erik Lensherr exactly the depth that this character deserves. He is bitterly angry and cunning at the same time. Exactly that closes the circle to Sir Ian McKellen's performance in the original X-Men movie from 2000.
My favourite scene: Erik Lensherr's performance at the Villa Gesell, Argentina.
A truly inspired vision for a franchise that was sorely in need of some fresh air, First Class does so much so well that it can be easy to overlook its shortcomings until it's too late. As an added dimension to the relationship between Xavier and Magnus, it's brilliant - multi-layered and revealing. Nearly every word shared by the two in this picture works to enhance their antagonistic rapport in the Stewart-McKellen films, improving upon an already-solid backbone. This chapter is also surprisingly even-handed and honest, presenting a scenario where neither man is truly in the right nor the wrong.
It's that tantalizing balance that's the key to the characters' relationship in the comics, and it's never been presented more efficiently. The Cold War motif that surrounds them serves initially as an ideal backdrop to their budding kinship, but eventually proves too ambitious for its own good. By the time the big climax rolls around, the story has basically painted itself into a corner and the conclusion, as a result, feels hurried and insubstantial. Forgiving the sub-par finale, it's a nice return to form for the franchise that only occasionally gets caught up in winks and nods at the audience.
I always loved the original X-Men trilogy bit this reboot movie is definitely on another level. Great acting and compelling storyline.
X-Men: First Class attempts to reboot the franchise and re-envisions the series. The film follows the first formation of the X-Men during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, in which the CIA helps create a special mutant unit to combat a rogue despot who is orchestrating a nuclear war. Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, and Kevin Bacon, the cast is particularly strong and delivers excellent performances. Unfortunately, continuity errors abound as apparently the filmmakers failed to watch the original trilogy. But apart from that, the story is fairly good and adds a new perspective to the series. The special effects are pretty good and the action sequences are outstanding. X-Men: First Class is an exciting action film, and an x-cellent prequel that provides an epic origin to the X-Men saga.
This is exactly what the franchise needed, a soft reboot with a new cast. I can't believe how good of a cast they got to play the core team and all before they were big stars. McAvoy and Fassbender are great together.
+1 for the mashing up history events with X-men genesis.
This really isn't as good as I remembered.
mm it really didn't have that element that X-Men universe has,i don't know how it will be on people but to me it was just like a very short sequel explaining the other upcoming parts! or as i like to think
Due to the spirit of X-men Apocalypse coming soon, I decided to re-watch all this series... I love the chemistry between the actors, specially Fassbender and McAvoy, their bromance is the best! <3
Almost pitch-perfect!.... An X-tremely good job!
"First Class" has some nice ideas and is a solid action flick but not outstanding and not as good as the other X-Men movies in my opinion.
Film held in suspense from beginning to end. Charismatic characters, lots of climate, great dialogues. Entertainment at a high level.
Great film, loved the cameos
Worth seeing. Great chemistry between McAvoy & Fassbender. Developing a bit of a crush on Nicholas Hoult.
The time line is a bit dodgy in this adaption... Example, Xavier walks in the end of Wolverine.. And here he gets shot when he is still a teenager...
This is by far one of my favorite X-men movies I have ever seen. Such a great job was done.
Colour me impressed. Right up there with the Nolan Batmans and Snyders Watchmen. A must see for fans of cinema, the rest is cream.
Best X-Men Movie, go watch it!
FANTASTIC I agree with @rj89 I though this movie was gonna be bad and I love Sci-Fi and super hero movie so much. Thought it did poorly in the theaters for some reason. I just assumed it was not a good movie... I figured it would have 4 something on IMDB I looked after I watched it and went WOW THAT'S A GREAT FRIKING MOVIE! IT'S AN 8! that is insane! Inception & T.D.Knight are at 8.9 the best of LOTR is 8.8 this is a class act movie folks. IF you are a hungry Sci-Fi lover dig in you don't get to feast like this often.
I'll be honest I DID NOT want to see this even though I'm super into Marvel and DC (and movies, animations they make) I had reservations because I didn't want to see teen/young adult versions....but man this was a good movie. I'm very very surprised. Best of the xmen movies for sure. I try to think about those abominations that were X3 and Wolverine....ugh.
Don't ask me why, but I really like that Rose Byrne actress.
Best X-Men I've ever seen... Very good!
Metthew Vaughn is simply put a GENIUS!!
Really well done, definitely a breathe of fresh air from a franchise that was struggling.
Nice one, good acting, satisfying story. But where to go now?
Magneto looks that way because the movies tries to stay close at the comics...

The best X-Men movie ever made with a proper plot and a good mixture of action, story and drama.
excellent, as good as the first one
Fantastic, I loved it. But, why the outfit at the end Magneto? You look like a clown or a possible fast food mascot.
Not just a great X-Men movie, but also a great movie period. Please go see this and support it. Hopefully they will make more.
Amazing movie! Deeper and more emotionally engaging than most superhero movies, yet with enough kick-ass (sorry) action to make it a superb superhero movie as well.
loved the film. great CGI and terrific story.
Just back from the advanced screening of X-Men: First Class. Top of the line movie by the director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Stardust)Great story and perfectly executed by Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon and all the others. Definitely the best of all.

My third viewing of X-Men: First Class. I thought about watching all of the X-Men films since I'm super excited for X-Men: Days of Future Past next week!! But I decided to stick just for this one to get into the X-Men spirit!
Still great!
Fassbender + McAvoy = best bromance ever!!
