In spite of a charmingly sexual Margo Martindale and an overall solid cast. This is a movie that feels like a harder romance spin-off of American Pie. The poster design with the American Pie style stamp doesn't help. Isla and Jason have decent chemistry but nothing you want to write home about. There's gross out scenes for no reason just to remind you that hey this could have been an American Pie spin-off. Honestly I was being facetious the first time I said it as I reread my words. I wonder. What are the chances this was originally supposed to be an American Pie spin off or some sort of spec script and someone said "let's get a red-head and just do it man".
There's not too much memorable in it though. It's not gross enough for the gross out comedy. It's not rom enough for the rom-com genre. The big scenes aren't big enough. And it's too blasé for the indie rom-com genre. It has a solid concept but it just doesn't stick the landing. It's watchable but unless you're literally tethered to your desk for hours with nothing else to do and you want to watch something, in 2-3 minute segments spaced with 10-30 minutes of mind numbing work, that you don't have to invest in emotionally or care about when it's done.. then why bother. I mean that's my excuse but what's yours?
So, this is a stupid romantic comedy, but that shouldn't suggest that it isn't sweet and totally worth a watch.
Another detail is that this movie is rated R and does not shy away from gross-out moments. Okay? Do we all understand that there is nothing about a movie being a romantic comedy that suggests it can't have bawdy moments? Can we understand that an R rating is there to stand as a notice that there may be content meant for adults only? If you can't handle that, maybe go elsewhere or grow up.
Anyway!
Wedding Daze has the perfect couple with Biggs, and Fisher, playing two lovable, awkward people trying to find happiness, even if that means jumping into a relationship without any thought whatsoever. What's funny is as stupid as that sounds, it's actually the plot of every serious romantic comedy... the difference being this one shines a light on how dumb it is.
Nevertheless, the movie manages to be touching as it is over-the-top. Is it predictable? Of course. Does that actually matter? Not in the slightest.
If you need a distraction from life and the fact that you are going to die and that nothing you do objectively matters, watch this.
It was a one time watch lightweight movie.

Well, Isla Fisher is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses. From Wedding Crashers to Definitely Maybe and now this. She is the lone bright spot in an otherwise bland, contrived, weak story. I feel so bad for Jason Biggs. Even though he is 10 years older, he is still stuck as poor Jim from American Pie and always will be until he starts taking on some roles with meaning. His schtick wasn't completely juvenile in this movie but that was more than compensated for by his parents. They were two of the most misplaced, disgusting characters I've seen in what is billed as a romantic comedy. Like I said, without Isla Fisher this would be 1/2 star but she at leasts makes this movie just painful.
