Awsome concept, but sadly a terrible execution
Johnny Depp? Morgan Freeman? It amazes me that these names that used to make me dream now just feel like another brand name like Sneakers or Coca Cola. And everybody knows that too much Sneakers and Coca Cola aren't good for the health.
A story about a huge super-almighty AI. It poses some pretty interesting ethical questions:
What makes us human? Consciousness? Emotions? Is an AI with both a human? Or does it need a human body?
How far are we allowed to go in our progress of using technology? When it is too much? Sure, having everyone connected like at the end of the movie is too far, but where exactly was the line? And aren't we connected to each other way too much already nowadays?
Is it ethically allowed to grow a human body and insert a previous backed up consciousness into it?
Are we allowed to re-create out environment, healing it, with micro robots if we are able to? Fiddle with the very nature? Or are we already way more cruel to it today?
Overall, I think this movie was well over-averaged, but not among the best. There are some logical holes, for instance, why isn't the AI fully informed of the plans against it? Shouldn't it been able to monitor and anticipate their moves, or coming and aiming at least? For that matter, it did before when informing the FBI about the whereabouts of RIFT...
Yet, in the end, it has proven to be human, by being willing to destroy itself out of fears of humanity, or becoming to artificial itself. I am not sure one can even describe the reason for the (basically) self-destruction if not for our very values.
I felt Freeman's performance a bit underwhelming, I felt the wrong actor played the wrong role. I think it would be much more interesting if he played the 2nd scientist, asking all the moral questions.
Rating: 8/10
This is very much the most boring and predictable story you can tell about the Singularity. Big meh.
I have never heard about this movie, I think it's been undervalued in my country. A scientist and his God complex mixed with fringe science and brand new technology ... not ordinary! Wonderful cast
Sorry, but that was a really terrible movie. Nothing EVER happened. I can't believe how boring the movie was. It could be summed up in two sentences. A swallow doesn't make a summer and one famous actor don't make a good movie. Wow, what a waste of my time and money. Do not recommend.
magnificent!
If you have any experience in IT don't watch this movie. It's on the level of Independence Day ending.
"Be careful what you wish for, cause you just might get it."
'Transcendence' is a science fiction movie about Artificial Intelligence with some classic themes in it. After a tragic event someone is brought back to life by copying his mind to a (quantum)computer. When the program spins out of control, it is up to the heroes of the story to stop the machine from destroying humankind.
Story
So far so good. A basic AI story with all kinds of possibilities, and this is where they went wrong. It looks like they could not really decide which theme(s) they really wanted to go with, so almost every theme is hinted at: Self-consciousness, Technology as a life form, is a machine able to Love, is the world holistic or based on reductionism, Could a machine ever overpower us, post apocalyptic world, struggle of morality, devotion and faith et cetera. None of these themes gets the proper time to get deepened out, so we end up with a movie with a lot of unsatisfying development.
Secondly, the first scene of the movie already betrays the end of the movie, which was a very bad decision, because it took out all the suspense from the movie and made you aware of the ending from the beginning.
Some plot holes which made me think the creators think I am dumb, but in the end made me think they are dumb:
1. I thought it was weird the 'virus' had to be uploaded by 'the wife' Evelyn, since it was basically working like an antidote (a bit weak imho) and since the AI's main goal was to "improve" everyone, not kill them, dosing people with the virus would make them invulnerable for hostile takeovers.
2. Also, the main power source of the AI was his solar park. Even though he operated on the complete Internet and everything connected to it, including the power grid itself (which is literally named in the movie.) So shutting down that solar park should not have any effect on him at all!
Characters
Besides a few 'errors in 'judgment', the cast is overall pretty good and does a nice job. Nobody will probably win an award for this movie and some characters are so anonymous I cannot even remember their characters name just after watching the movie (I seriously had to look this example up: Paul Bettany as Max Walters.)
Visuals/Music
The music in the movie was pretty decent. Nothing special, just like the movie in it's whole, but not bad either. Visuals were neat, but no megalomania was added, so you won't really be able to enjoy big massive visual spectacles on the screen. But this is not a film for that anyway.
Overall/Enjoyment
In contrary to the many negative points I wrote down, it is not bad of a movie at all. It does not reach classic heights or big majestic scenes, but you will be interested in it as long as you like the AI kind of Science Fiction. I especially liked how the movies seems to have a bit of a slower pace than is the standard nowadays, which I can appreciate.
The movie begins interesting, promising a quite intriguing story and it ends in a superb way. However, and this is very unfortunate, every thing in between is mediocre, partly even worse: the plot has holes (e.g. why and how do the rebels know about Brightwood after going underground and turning even their cellphones off, why is Joe the AI professor suddenly leading military troops or why are a few single cores for PINN hooked up to some rag-tag equipment in a desolated building enough to analyze Will's mind?), the story is mostly predictable and the performance of the support cast is poor (especially Max (Paul Bettany) and Bree, but also the wooden and lifeless Joe (Morgan Freeman)). All these weaknesses along with same hilarious assumptions regarding quantum- / super-computers and AI make it sometimes nearly unbearable to continue watching Transcendence.
However, as mentioned in the introduction, the ending is superb and makes up for a lot. As a fan of Nolan's films a have to say I am quite disappointed in his 2014 work: Transcendence is nowhere near Prestige, Insomnia / Memento or the Dark Knight movies and Interstellar is the even bigger disappointment! I really hope that his future work will improve again!!!
Right a supper intelligent AI that controls a whole town with nanobots cant stop a crazy bitch threatening a traitor. And sacrifices the love of his life and himself and all that he has worked for. Sorry but in this movie AI stand for Artificial Ignorance.
I didn't have any expectations for good entertainment and yet got disappointed.
The saddest part about Transcendence is that the purely fictional part makes more sense than the actions of the humans in the world as we know it.
Intriguing storyline which goes to the heart of human existence
This movie clearly represents how many technofobiacs and tech haters in between the film critics.
This movie was AWESOME, MAGNIFICENT, And one of the kind. It was the strongest and anyone who loves sci-fi and interests in technology will make this movie one of the best movies in his life.
The movie has a so strong impact to who loves it like a cinder block hit you from a sky scraper.
I don't know how many Asimow books are adapted in this artwork but man, just WOOOW.
So, so. Wasn't as good as it could have been.
This movie was a good adaptation to the whole "Machine Intelligence" (AI is legally speaking "too degrading"). I'm an 50/50 fan of Johnny Depp but he got my vote in this movie. And the main reason why I enjoyed it so much is the fact that it seems extremely sci-fi, but they put it in a sense where it seems like it could be possible. I'd give it a better review if there was more concern on the technology, and less concern on the "terrorist, war" threat.
First half was good... kept me wondering...
But second was typical American crap
Some years ago I was about to watch a film on DVD I had just bought ( it's funny that I don't even remember which one), I was watching all the trailers first and I watch the trailer for this movie, I said to myself I think I'm gonna need to watch this one; funny thing happened the next day, one of my cousins came to my house only to bring me this movie on DVD (happens to me a lot, I wish for something and I just get it; that's the way I get many of my stuff ) now this movie is in my collection and I love it. (◠‿◕)(◔‿◔)
2/10
amazing cast, TERRIBLE script
Still 30 minutes to go but can’t be bothered to watch this anymore. It started so great, but kept getting crazier and crazier. Crazy is good but this is just outrages.
"My wife has always been eager to change the world. But I'll just settle for understanding it first."
I remember being somewhat excited to see this back in the day. Turns out it was just a cool concept turned into a pretty boring movie.
I really wanted to like this one, I feel it wanted to be very deep and end up being a conversational piece... but it fell flat for me. the storyline changed directions a couple times (shock value or attempt to be unexpected, i can't pinpoint) and various elements were left unexplored... (I.e. no spoiler , there would be no way in hell no news outlets would show up to cover this whole thing. ) a meh for me
Interesting Wargames + Terminator + Borg vibes
A truly terrible movie with some misplaced gorgeous shots here and there, and a lot of boredom and bad storytelling otherwise. The plot is so full of holes that it doesn't require suspension of disbelief to accept but rather total suspension of intelligence. The lead actress is mostly poor in her performance, and everyone else was hired only because there was enough budget to do so, most notably Morgan Freeman, who seems to have been cast as part of someone's bucket list.
Johnny Depp plays a controversial intellectual, whose quest for artificial intelligence takes a sharp turn when he's struck by an irradiated bullet in a (temporarily) failed assassination attempt. With experimental technology already in place, he uploads his own consciousness to the system and sparks an explosive debate when his thoughts begin to influence the internet at large.
The concept is a special one, and it takes care to really look at the issue from both perspectives, which is admirable. On one side we've got Depp, who may be doing irreparable damage despite a noble goal, while on the other he's opposed by violent, kneejerking extremists who may have legitimate fears. That core argument gets a bit watered-down and oversimplified as we build to an overly neat, tidy climax, but the journey to get there is plenty rewarding and the debate itself is endlessly thought-provoking. Perhaps a mild underachievement, given the daunting potential, it's still worth tickling the brain over.
Better than I thought it would be. This will be seriously scary if this is possible.
The AI in this movie IS a computer virus, by definition. So sick of Hollywood using a virus to "save the world" when they obviously have no idea of what a virus is. Even the nanobites could be considered a virus. Besides all that, a virus is useless unless its activated, can't be just uploaded and... poof!
Last thing about this movie, the terrorists won. Love the irony, love the message, but I don't think the average viewer would understand it at all, this is a movie for very advanced thinkers, perhaps 10% of the viewers would even have a clue. Case in point, the "good guys" stated the don't negotiate with terrorists, yet the end of the movie was the AI negotiating with the girl threatening the guys life. The result was a giant step back to the 18th century. Most viewers would not only miss this ironic point but the rest of the movie as well.
There was one humongous plot hole however. Why not give the virus to one of the hundreds of anonymous volunteers that where being assimilated. There was no reason to give Evelyn the virus at all.
Me gusto, pero un poco lenta.
Better watch "Collossus". Dissapointing movie.
Best AI movie I've ever seen, not perfect but quite brilliant!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh the feels!!!!! LOVED IT
Leave you thinking if you are an IoT person. Kate Mara annoying as usual.
I loved it! Sure the ending could've been better but at least it didnt leave a bad taste in your mouth.
A little facepalm. Nothing is held together, too long, with flat characters. Sometimes just silly. Kate Mara is a plus.
Estuvo buena, la nanotecnología a la orden del día!
Few people in the cinema. Started well but then becomes very slow for what counts. I do not like Will Caster "fix" things
For me this was a very good movie.Nolan never disappoints me.
Despite the bad reviews that I have seen around here lately I wanted to go check this recent sci-fi thriller anyway. I was curious about it since I saw the trailer. Transcendence turns out to be definitely not transcendent but for me it was not terrible also.
I guess most of the people think this film is terrible because even though the concept is very cool there's so many messages to deliver and so many complexed technological terms used at the same time that we kinda feel lost here and there.
Dr. Will Caster believes in Artificial Intelligent, a super computer that can be able to help us to create a better world. There's an organized group of terrorist who are against this idea. Followed by some tragic events Will's mind is transfered into the super computer that himself created with his wife's help. Will's mind starts to grow and as soon as he became more powerful, he can bring serious consequences to the world.
For such a strong and cool concept the plot is not very well structured and poor developed. I think the pace is the biggest problem of this film. Sometimes things happen too fast and other times we have to wait so long to see something different to happen. Maybe it is a bit too long also.
When it comes to visuals and cinematography nothing bad to say, they were very well done! The performances are also solid, Johnny Deep, Paul Bettany and specially Rebecca Hall that gives a very touching and real performance. Morgan Freaman is always a joy to see no matter the role and Cillian Murphy a good actor, but both don't have much to do on screen. I would like to had seen more of them.
This films has a lot of messages to transmit that actually keeps us wondering about them when the film ends. Humanity vs Technology seems to be the main theme of this film. Can Technology be dangerous in a near future? Can man control everything just by a network? Are we humans self aware? Are we able to see the danger in the evolution of Technology? But this are just superficial questions... The real message of this film is about love. What a human being is capable of doing for true love? And it was that final turn at the end of the film what made me like it a little more. Well but I don't wanna spoil anything for you. You have to see it to understand what I am saying.
Overall, don't expect too much from Transcendence. Look at it just as an entertaining sci-fi film where the performances will make you care more about the story that for more flaws that it can have is able to warm or heart with an emotional twist.
A different approach to the common "AI vs. The World" theme. Loved it.
