They Cloned Tyrone 2023

Nice idea, good cinematography. But it just didn’t work out. It was overly long and boring.

Loved this. It’s so slick and brimming with style, and a wonderful modern day homage to blaxploitation, levying it’s satirical strengths instead of only parodying the genre. Boyega is deeply magnetic, doing so much even when saying little. Foxx shows off why he’s one of the most enduring and electric movie stars, dazzling the screen with every second. And Parris is a rising star, more than holding her own with boundless charm and a vibrant heart. The trio just sizzle together, the chemistry so rich I’d happily take more movies with them. The script is tightly written as well, with a mystery that unsettles, engrosses, and entertains all at once while having some smart things to say about assimilation, governmental control, and community and our place in it. Forget Barbenheimer, this was a real highlight.

Worst I've watched this year

guys don’t miss They Cloned Tyrone! it sucks that Netflix released on Barbenheimer weekend but genuinely a great film all around and the main cast is so good, all their banter is top notch, sharp social commentary and a real retro throwback to the 70s

"Shit like this always happens to my girl Nancy Drew. Sis be coming across some weird, kinky shit that don't make no sense, but in the end, it always turns out to be some regular-degular, missionary-position vanilla shit."

The comedy and dialogue go hand in hand here, it really works. The comedic interactions between characters is what made it a good watch for me. The title reveals a big part of the mystery but there's still plenty to offer and a few twists and turns. The funk hip-hop synth score and songs were a pretty good fit. The SpongeBob and Nancy Drew callouts were funny. It's too long though, I was about ready for it to end and there was still 50 minutes left—which turned out to be worth it. A good third act. Overall, it had it's moments but I can't see myself remembering this for too long.

I want some fried chicken now

Way better than any of the recent Right wing conspiracy movies out there. If you want to control the masses, Easily done, just dose the fried chicken.

Fun movie with a great vibe. A little long and a little boring at times but picks up nicely in the end.

Abandoned this after about 1:20:00. Didn’t hold my interest.

What a total mess. I knew better than to watch another "netflix movie". They just steal an idea, and somehow, always make it much worse. And it's way too long for what it is.

loading replies

I did not see that coming! i was expecting something else thank God it wasn't. I found it interesting (yes we know it was done before) but here it has some nice laughs in all the ways of trying to control the people, it started in one direction and when you realized what is happening you have a smile on your face cause you are certain it is not one of the mass craps from Netflix. I found it interesting and a certain watch if you are into quirky movies.

loading replies

So... what's the point of this movie? Nothing happens for 2 hours!

loading replies

I feel duped. Saw this in a random article from The Verge. I usually like verge's reporting, so I decided to give this a try. The trailer felt quirky and fresh enough too.

I was not aware that blaxploitation as a movie genre. I'm still hazy on what that means exactly. As I don't hail from the USA or even the western world, this term is a bit out of place for me.

So a drug dealer gets shot and then the movie picks up. It goes into the science fiction with human cloning and standard plan of a multinational company to keep the black folks subdued and compliant.

The concept is ludicrous and the movie knows that. For most part it doesn't take itself seriously. The aesthetic is very chic and the dialogue peppy. That kept me connected to the movie till the end.

The cloning thing was done fairly well in Jordan Peele's Us. But that's just the last explanation. Everything else is different in these two movies, I just wanted a better climax. Had higher expectations from a Jamie Foxx starrer.

It's an okay casual watch. Not a must.

It would be great if Netflix featured more films like "They Cloned Tyrone" and fewer films like "Heart of Stone." The homage to the Blaxploitation film is consistently compelling, with a distinct look and a strong trio of actors (Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, and Teyonah Parris) in the lead roles. Above all, the opening of this sci-fi comedy works wonderfully; the characters are interesting from the start, and an exciting mystery is also built up. A few lengths creep in later, but they can't ruin the overall impression.

I really enjoyed this movie. Great blend of sci-fi and comedy. The banter between the cast was hilarious. My only gripe was it was a bit too long.

loading replies

Throw Get Out and Cabin in the Woods into a blender and this is the result. Luckily, both of those movies are fantastic, so this film has a solid foundation to work with. I loved the retro style and the production design. On the performance side, John Boyega continues to impress as he takes meatier roles and puts Star Wars far in the rear view. That said, I have to say that Jamie Foxx steals the show, being equal parts magnetic and hilarious. With respect to the story, I do have some complaints. I feel like the movie fails to fully capitalize on an incredibly strong opening and an intriguing premise. It's never bad by any means, but perhaps undercooked, with some rushed/superficial elements. Kind of felt like a lot of good ideas thrown together a little haphazardly. Even so, an enjoyable film that is well worth a watch.

way better than I expected, Jammie and boyega killed it!

I had to watch this before I cancelled my subscription

Enjoyable to watch thanks to the fun performances and twisty turny plot. Works better as a satire than a well-constructed story though.

A great film, with a crazy story that mixes different ingredients in surprising ways. Furthermore, it offers an incredible critique of racism and introduces very interesting characters.

loading replies

This movie was awesome, I really enjoyed it. My only complaint is the way it was shot by Netflix, there's a lot of parts in the movie that are too dark, and the awful amount of film grain they added all combine in some scenes leading to a tremendous loss of detail. Besides that the movie was fantastic, shame it was probably overshadowed by Barbenheimer, it deserves your time!

A potentially interesting story taken beyond the edge of parody, where it all breaks down. The title may be the most marketable part of the film. The soundtrack is better than the script and it's a sad laugh free hour plus, and not even close to Undercover Brother in any way. Avoid.

Short review. Copying this to other movies I am doing all at the same time.

I liked the soundtrack and trio here. I also thought it was pretty funny. The ending part of the film was also very cool.

Refreshing and unexpected, like a cold 40 from the bodega downstairs when they give you too much change back.

This science fiction conspiracy theory block party threw me off guard and caught me by surprise.

Super funny and unique premise, with twists and turns you won't see coming. Incredible performances by the main 3 characters.

i just wish netflix would do 90 minutes movies.

Rather, “The Cabin in the Woods” popped up in my memory, although not without allusions to “Get Out”. Especially when you realize that "gangsta nigga" comedy mutates sharply into a paranoid (and very socially relevant!) conspiracy theory, but at the same time it does not stop making you laugh. And the solution will not change anything! An excellent soundtrack, and that the main idea is filed so on the forehead, is best said in the film itself.
The straighter the fucking mouth, the merrier!

So, no salt or pepper—just the chicken in its natural flavors? I'll have to try that tonight. Just got a crock pot.

The pacing dips just a bit before the end, but overall, the film manages to be moody, authentic, and hilarious throughout, while itself entirely being a commentary on race and society in America, but without being either Hollywood committee pandering, or pseudointellectual, plot-hole laden drivel, which, in 2o23, is an amazing accomplishment.

Great to see Boyega forging past his usury by Di$ney to star in roles that not only let him actually do something, but shine in a stoic lead. Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris rounded out a dynamic trio that kept my face creased with amusement.

I look forward to seeing what Rettenmeier and Taylor create in the future.

Pleasant surprise. The sound track and the banter between the three main characters sold this for me. Don’t know how many trap boys will change their outlook after this, but the underlying story resonates.

It's Huxley's Brave New World as a satirical blaxploitation film.

Had its funny moments and most of the dialogue was good & funny. But the plot was basically Pootie Tang/Undercover Brother so that was a rehash. Throwing the detective angle in made it entertaining but it was too long. Definitely could’ve cut short some of the time and still told the whole story.

This theme has been done before, more than once. It was predictable.
