God, no. That's so awful, messy and hilariously bad at times. I'm surprised this film isn't from Blumhouse, it has the same energy. This religious horror film felt so generic and slow. It doesn't go anywhere interesting and it relies entirely on cheap jumpscares with annoyingly loud noises. The writing is bad and I can't forget that terrible CGI! I just couldn't take this seriously. Most of the characters are stupid or soulless. Also why they keep changing their accents throughout? For a horror film, pretty sure it's below average. The visuals and cinematography are the only good things regarding this film, unfortunately that's not enough to save this crap.
Not the beat horror movie by any stretch but it wasn’t GOD awful. It’s funny that Jeffrey Dean Morgan starred in this movie cause it reminded me of a episode from Supernatural. Where people believed that a blind preacher had the ability to heal people but it was actually a reaper trading a life for a life. That episode was better than this movie
Simple recipe for a horror movie, but with a moral. ;) If we do not expect an ambitious film with a bottom line, this one will not surprise us negatively.
im not sure why they decided to use poor quality CGI over practical effects and excessive amounts of overly loud jump scares - made it feel cheap and lazy
and, another movie with Cary Elwes attempting a terrible accent
Well! Well! Well! I think the other commentators said it all nothing to add from me. Hollywood STOP MAKING HORROR FILMS! PLEASE STOP!!
The only thing "Unholy" about this movie is the script.
As a big horror fan, and also a BIG Jeffrey Dean Morgan fan, i was very very disappointed with this movie! Soooo many plot holes, sooo much exposition... I was pissed :D Some caracters are very smart and put one-and-one together like immediately, and the other ones are just stupid as f***! xD From the first scene to the last one - you know how this movie will end.
Some decent and some lame jump scares... just... I mean you can watch this movie if you want, but i cant recomend it... 4/10
When in a horror film the director warns the viewer before each scare (the positioning of the camera, the vibration of the image ...) it means that something is wrong. It mentions apparitions of the Virgin in Lourdes, Fatima and Medjugorje. And it needs a miracle for such an insolvent script to arouse interest. Being generous, you can extract some reflection on the use of the apparitions as an object of manipulation.
This movie is terrible, there is simply nothing of value to be found here. Every single aspect of this movie is bad; The paint by numbers plot that does nothing new or have anything interesting to say. Jeffrey Dean Morgans flat, phoned-in performance. Cary Elwes horrific Bostonian accent. The amateur editing, camera work and composition all have an air of film student about them. Everything is poor, just so so poor. Skip this, use the 100 minutes for something else.
Maybe I was prejudiced by the low rating and all the bad comments but I never got into this movie.
The premise is interesting but the writing, acting, directing, well, the whole Shabang is bad. It's really nothing but cheap scare.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan stars in the supernatural horror film The Unholy. When an unscrupulous reporter breaks a corn doll to sensationalize a story, he unwittingly releases an evil spirit that poses as the Virgin Mary and gains a devoted following. Morgan gives a solid performance and is backed by a fairly decent supporting cast that includes William Sadler and Cary Elwes. And the writers do a good job at building the mystery as to whether or not Mary is a hoax and what her real purpose might me. Additionally, they also explore the tragedy that often comes with being a spiritual messenger and the compromises people make for the greater good. Full of mystery and intrigue, The Unholy is a chilling film about the power of faith.
This was an absolute dumpster fire of a film and it took me a moment to articulate my wtf reaction into actual words.
The plot is nothing original, persecuted witch, miraculous occurances that maybe aren't as miraculous as we think. its been done before. over and over and over. If someone is going to recycle this story, they need to do it better.
I'm not even going to go into how the girls accent changes between scenes or the super convenient explanations on obvious plot holes like why Alice can speak suspiciously well despite never having heard words spoken before. Both just add to the number of times you roll your eyes while suffering through this.
The CGI was terrible, and quite possibly the scariest part of it, but not because the imagery was frightening. I could have done up something better in my 1997 Adobe Illustrator class in high school. I failed that class by the way
This had the potential to be good but the problems were:
Casting. Morgan has already been in a relatively recent horror movie and this character wasn't all that different. Guys life is falling apart, young girl possessed by evil forces........see the pattern here? Also I think they made an error with the casting of Alice, it seemed so forced, I almost think the role should have been someone younger to be honest and there are far better actresses out there. It just looked like she was reciting lines, there was nothing behind the words.
Graphics. They were completely unnecessary for this movie. There didn't need to be any images of Mary in the sky or even the obvious CGI light reflection under the tree. It was too gimmicky and so poorly done that had my daughter walked in while I was watching this, even she woukd have rolled her eyes
The script. The dialogue was weak. It seemed hastily put together and a ton of religious cliches. There wasn't much in terms of suspense and Alice was irritating to listen to so there was no sort of investment in her character by the audience. I was rooting for the evil doll
It's been a while since I watched such a bad movie. Cliché story, horrible dialogues, poor script, telegraphed scares. Do not waste your time with this one.
Not a bad movie but not super scary. Jeffery Dean was good….. I’d give it a watch.
It wasn’t scary…. But not the worst either…..
This was slightly better than expected. I actually found it mildly entertaining. However, there's not really anything new or unique to this movie.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
I like Morgan and he did well with the material here. Didn't hate this like many reviewers did, it was adequate for the genre and had some good moments. Parts were very predictable but that's typical for these types of flicks. would have been nice for it to elevate higher, but it's much better than the 2-3s it's getting. 5.7.
This movie was bad. There was no saving this with the story, or the cgi. The acting was ok, even tho it had major known actors, including a Portuguese actor. I was constantly thinking that this movie was a lousy spin off of Supernatural, and I was almost praying that Dean came bursting through the door to end their (and the viewer’s) suffering.
(Un)Holy shit.
PG-13 horror is nothing but a bad mix of jump scares and clichés.
The screenplay writer has a career in children's movies and it shows. If it weren't comically bad in some parts, it would be entirely uninteresting.
I really like the story, some bits were fresh ideas I din't see in such movies. But every death couldbe easily avoidable if ppl weren't so stupid. And the 'chasing' scenes were so short the demon/ghost felt not so powerful as they all talked about so much. The movie is pretty much all talk and not really showing. The pacing is lacking as well. Overall, the plot has potential but the execution is really bad.
what a waste of time. this movie has Sam Raimi's name attached to it and that has ruined his legacy as a horror king. despite the story being unique and the premise being interesting, the movie failed at almost every front. the worst was the not so subtle religious tones that were thrown around. they also mistook loud noises for something that makes a movie scary. christians should jsut leave hollywood alone they are ruining horror by turning movies into "our god is powerful" mantra every time.
Predictable and you kinda didn’t care what happened to the characters cause they were awful
Not the least bit scary
Piss poor CGI, low rent compositing. LOUD NOISES! to make jump scare jumpy.
This should have come out in the 60s alongside 'witchfinder general' and *the devil's sisters (or something like that)
This is a Sunday dinner time movie.
Hi, anyone who's watched it, is it worth the time?

An unholy mess. This horror movie commits the biggest cinematic sin of all…it’s boring!
