The Taking of Deborah Logan 2014

Found footage movie has a novel concept, with an excellent performance from Larson in the title role. Becomes a little wearing by the end, but for the most part, this is a creepy little movie that will stick with you.

I didn't know this was a Found Footage movie and it was fun to see one as it has been a while. This was pretty good, and I would call it more shocking than scary. Jill Larson as Deborah Logan was worth the price of admission. I decided to rate this with an extra point for the moment when Deborah's jaw is unhinged like a snake, and she has swallowed most of a little girl's head!!! I guess there were hints that something like that could happen, but I did not see that coming.

Well acted, especially by Jill Larson (Deborah Logan), but OH the horror movie clichés... It would have been far better had they opted for not explaining everything with the typical horror movie scene of finding old documents and stuff . It's a decent watch though, and there are some genuinely creepy scenes involving the old lady.

Shot in documentary style. A bit slow, with few scary moments until the Big Scary Conclusion, which was super weird and kinda creepy, but I liked the story! Great acting.

Found footage, Alzheimer’s, rituals, possession. Started off decent and finished sub par. Story felt a bit on the weak side, characters were bland. Overall, the film sits on the lower half of average for me.

I'm kinda surprised by the even modest scores here. While Jill Larson was great as the titular character, there was next to no chemistry with her daughter (played by a patchy Anne Ramsay) and Michelle Ang was pretty weak as Mia. Aside from a couple of mildly creepy moments, it wasn't scary or gory (if that's your thing), and the general production felt rather messy - perhaps somewhat unavoidable with the "found footage" concept. Furthermore, a lot of the dialogue felt like it was improvised and not in a good, naturalistic style but in a disjointed and unbelievable way.

It had the germ of an interesting setup, where a person suffering from dementia is susceptible to demonic possession due to reduced cognitive faculties, but unfortunately this film didn't really achieve anything interesting during its 90 minutes of screen time.

I don't watch a lot of horror films, so I wasn't really put off by what other people found to be horror movie clichés. I found it exceedingly effective at playing on primal fear, and was actually pretty horrified while watching, but in the good, intended way--not something like that disgusting Suspiria remake (or a lot of the original's gory scenes.) Scary shit. --and agreed with @whitsbrain in that the end completely caught me off guard as a holyshitwhatthefuck moment, as it should have been.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘The Taking of Deborah Logan’:

  1. Horror and supernatural elements aside, this is actually a very sad film.

  2. Kudos to Jill Larson for quite a performance. I can’t imagine that role was very easy to pull off.

  3. I was indubitably creeped out and on edge for a large portion of the movie, but a subpar mythology and cliche ending left me somewhat disappointed. This could’ve been a solid 8.

I'm not really sure how "The Taking of Deborah Logan" made me feel. While it's nearly perfect in so many technical aspects, it still lacks something to make it all feel a little bit more organic.
As a narrative, the film really does some great points and even gets THERE - to the point where I got truly shocked, surprised with some screenplay features. Despite the great aspects and the interesting plotlines, the experience wasn't immersive at all.
