The awards are given in over ten categories of which the most important is the Film of the year. They are restricted to European cinema and European producers, directors, and actors.

The awards were originally called the Felix Awards but the name was changed to the European Film Awards.

Festival de Cannes (en: Cannes Festival, also known as Cannes Film Festival) is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from around the world. Before 2002 it was known as Festival international du film (en: International Film Festival).

Since 1995, the official name of the award has been simply the Grand Prix, but it has had two other names since its creation in 1967: Grand Prix Spécial du Jury (1967-1988), and Grand Prix du Jury (1989-1994). In 1968, festival was cancelled because of the May 1968 events in France.
