Resonated with me on multiple levels. A sad film, and a reminder that no hard we try, we cannot save everybody.
I've opened my eyes and they're staring at Karen Gillan.
My respect for this woman has just gone through the roof. I've always enjoyed her on screen but I now have the utmost admiration for her creativity and talent. On top of an amazing performance and a touching script, this is an extremely bold feature debut from Gillan, providing a realistic and intense gathering of pessimism and loss of stamina. Have you got a stitch?
Whenever I try to be creative with my phone camera, I am always drawn to the mundanities of my fairly uneventful life and seemingly unpleasant things such as bins, trolleys in the street, empty beer bottles thrown into the centre of Earth Green or even bird discharge on the floor. Karen Gillan and her cinematographer Edd Lukas does the same, and it really does a fantastic job in portraying a dark Scotland and the repetition of certain locations, shots and even lines of dialogue really hit close to home.
I always wonder how the hell I'm not an only child - a brother to 4?! What! An uncle to 5?! No way! I suppose the reasoning behind my ability to relate to an only child's loneliness is because I am certainly the outcast of my siblings. Having been born in a literal different millennium to them, I feel like I'm from a different family a lot of the time.
I'm glad assured movies like The Party's Just Beginning exist to show me that I'm not alone.
There are some good ideas in here, and Karen Gillan is incredible as always, but unfortunately the script needed more work. Good set up but the story doesn't really go anywhere.
It takes some paying attention to to appreciate this movie, otherwise most of it will blow over your head. I think it picked up momentum by the end of the film, Karen Gillan did a great job in the lead role.

I thought this was a solid, gritty, emotional directorial debut by Karen Gillan. Despite its flaws, I liked it a lot.
