The Outfit 2022

Whatta film!

'The Outfit' is excellent. Second time in roughly three weeks that I've had the pleasure of seeing a Mark Rylance flick on the big screen and again he delivers - such a reliable actor. The other release was 'The Phantom of the Open', which is very good but both the film and Rylance's performance is bettered here. A thoroughly enjoyable showing from him as Leonard Burling.

Things start off extremely strongly with a terrific opening scene with Rylance's Burling, so I was praying that it would keep that high level and I'm pleased to say that - in my opinion, of course - it absolutely did. There's a bit at the end that I was initially unsure about, though upon further thought I enjoyed it just as much as the rest.

One element of this 2022 production actually stays the same from start-to-finish, I won't say what but early on I thought it may limit proceedings but if anything it just adds to the overall vibe of it all. The support cast, meanwhile, are all faces I didn't know before now, though every one of them give good performances - standouts being Johnny Flynn and Nikki Amuka-Bird.

This was a pleasant surprise. Well acted, smart, and surprisingly suspenseful. Highly recommended. Just remember, he's a cutter, not a tailor!

Mark Rylance, the legend that he is, steals the show. He has such huge screen presence, you can be forgiven for mistaking this movie to have only a single member of cast!!!

A fantastic cinematic masterpiece. This is a film for movie bluffs and/or videographers who like to dive deep into the analysis of a movie. This film takes place in one setting and takes a lot of effort to unravel everything from plot to characters to antagonists to conflict, ect. Starts out slow and normal then takes a turn, but overall it certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat the entirety of the film. The close up and intense acting to fit the script is very entertaining. However, if you are a person who just wants a generic entertaining film that doesn't use much brain power, this is not the movie for you.

Well tailored performance from Mark Rylance, but I got tired pretty quickly from all those twists and turns

Not nearly as clever as one is set up to believe it's all going to be, but you're really just there for the Mark Rylance show. Pity more isn't made of the claustrophobic setting. Perhaps with smarter filmmaking...

It just didn't click with me. By the end there wasn't a single character I cared about.

loading replies

Rylance is superb and makes the film himself. Film which starts with a boring and slow pace, but improves over time towards the ending. Not too convinced about some passages and resolution, and of some character beyond the protagonist, especially the females depicted in a way a bit too modern.

Like da Vinci's shoe box diorama : it's well put together, contained, and easy to figure out.

The most surprising thing about this chamber thriller story of a cutter ("I'm not a tailor"), his assistant and the mob in early 60s Chicago is that it wasn't a play first. Everything from the sets to the blocking looks like it was done on the stage first, but no, this original screenplay always identified as a movie, no matter how odd it presents in that light.

What's left is a film that thinks it's more clever than it is (I saw well over half of the 'twists' coming even before they got their bobby socks on), but that doesn't prevent it from looking good. The other plus that keeps the film bobbing above average is the cast, with a Mark Rylance who absolutely owns the lead role and a refreshingly good Zoey Deutch who brings much needed light to this noir production.

Probably would've been more fun to watch in a theatre than a home theater, but that doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable.

Very good watch. I went in not knowing anything and was entertained the whole time. It's like a tightly-plotted play.

I've really been loving single-setting movies recently, and this one is no different. The characters shine here, and Mark Rylance's performance is especially great.

what a surprise ,an old style movie really enjoyed it

Rylance showcase that gets a little too carried away w certain plot developments. I'm trying not to spoil.
Enjoyable single location movie. Felt like i was watching a play which as it turns out this is based off of.
7.1 feels fair.

This is one of those movies that once you finish it you know you'll never watch again and then delete it. That's what I did. This is never a "I'm going to watch that again" movie, because once you know it you know it.

That being said, I think the acting is pretty good in this. It's not an action flick, it's play that is on your TV, with a single set. Think of movies like 12 Angry Men where everything happens in a single room, essentially a stage. If you like plays, you'll like this, if you enjoy good acting and a story with an unexpected twist, you'll like this but if you are looking for action then you won't.

The lead performance was outstanding in my opinion.

Been a long time since I really enjoyed and movie and this was it. Highly recommended.

Superb.

The cast is superb; Rylance carries his role with such conviction and grace it's hard to believe he's acting. The rest of the cast also deliver stellar performances.

The story, the pacing, the backdrop, the music... all of it culminates together into a wonderful experience.

The Outfit aims for perfection and does not miss.

The movie was quite good and the acting was great.
But it got a little boring due to the lack of different sceneries, what kinda pulls my rating down a little

What a well made, perfectly written and executed film, and to say that Graham Moore pulled it off on his 2nd film itself is huge. Sir Mark Rylance was just :type_1_2:.... And Zoey Deutch ofcourse was another showstopper. The way the movie started and ended was so shocking to me that i dived into the movie without even watching the trailer, i just saw that it was made by Graham Moore, had Mark, Zoey & Dylan in it and thought, Meh why not ?!! And wow !! In a single location with less than only 10 people throughout the whole film they executed it with perfection....

i really loved this movie's writing and twists; Mark Rylance was great

Great watch, but goddamn woke Hollywood just can’t help themselves checking the diversity boxes to take you out of the experience. The head of the French mafia a black woman, nice.

A really great kammerspiel almost worthy of Hitchcock. Mark Rylance's masterful performance is fundamental to making this film a great little masterpiece full of suspense until the last minute. Don't miss it

i cant decide on my rating to give it a 6 or a 7. Mark Rylance carrying this all the way. Without him this would have been perhaps at max a 5 out of 10 or worse. In all honesty the movie is a bit boring and slow. But it's still captivating.
I'll stick with a 7 as it's still "good enough" entertainment.

that was a lot of secrecy, double-crossing, lying, betrayal, was even a single word he ever uttered true? not good at lying? if that's not good, I wanna see someone who he considers good :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Absolute sleeper gem from last year that never even popped up on my radar, doubly surprised as I'm often a fan of "One-room movies"

Great small cast, great compelling storytelling, and great performances all around.
Had I caught this last year I think it would have made my top 10 quite easily.

Normally when I see movies I've never heard of on Netflix, they are either pretty bad/or non-English language films. But if you stumble across it here and are wondering if it's worth your time, from me it's a clear yes.

Mark Rylance delivers another fine performance in this twisty turny thriller that is well worth a watch.

starts calm but has a very exciting ending

This movie is a throwback to movies made long ago (which I don't always mean as a compliment). The movie is essentially a mystery / thriller, and one of the things that I love about the movie is that it takes places in the office of a "cutter". The office (and the profession) is one that demands order and a certain level of decorum and thus would seem to be the last place where such a movie would take place. This backdrop allows everything to take place right out in the open. Rylance plays the role of the cutter to perfection and it is this character that is the heart of the movie. The simplicity of the story allows the audience to dig into his character as the movie unfolds. The movie reminded me a lot of Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, although I thought this movie was more accessible than that one. I really enjoyed it.

Brilliant movie and full of surprises right to the end.

I have a soft spot for Mark Rylance and this movie only made that spot a little softer.

This was a terrific film. The acting was top-notch, the story was intriguing and well-paced, and just when you thought that you had everything figured out, the storyline swerved to create something that was likely not what you were imagining. This movie was really a drama piece built Mark Rylance's character. He was so tremendous in this, immersing himself in the role, that I almost forgot that I was watching him portray a character.

Not worthy of the hype. Good performance by the rather alluring main character, but a few cop-outs and unrealistic, odd character decisions ruined what would otherwise have been a terrific single setting suspense affair.

a movie about gangters and their cutter who designs their suits. many plot twists, mainly dialogues. great cast, great writing, funny, witty what else do you need? maybe action? well you have enough tension in this story. if you are a guy ritchie fan you will enjoy this movie. great work congrats!

I should have been call the room.... the whole thing is in one room

A film located on a single stage, which is enough to develop an interesting thriller that has its main virtue in the script. But also in the exquisite work of Mark Rylance, the true fundamental axis of a character whose looks are more important than his words. "A tailor, always listening, never talking." It's a clever game of appearances in which the clothing is a mask that establish the position of the characters.

This starts slow, but if you give it a chance its quite intriguing. I didn't expect what happened.

Entertaining with good rithm and some good twists.
