Well the first half was dull and boring, the second half was a bit better but not that great.
Easily worth a watch
March: "So you're telling me you made a porno where the point is the plot?"
The characters and comedy really drive this movie but the story never really hooked me. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are best buddies, great chemistry and comedic interactions. While the comedy is mostly hit, there are some moments where they're trying too hard to be funny. Not enough action for my liking (considering it's the first genre mentionned in the description) but whenever there's action, it's pretty good. I started to really enjoy the movie when Matt Bomer came in as the villain and Yaya DaCosta as Tally, it just suddenly became a better movie, so the last half hour was the best. Good performances. Nothing special from the filmmaking but it looks decent. It's missing a standout soundtrack but I like the funky score. Overall, this was an alright watch. And stuff.
Day 8 of Ryan Gosling Binge
- "Are you willing to find god?"
- "I'm trying to find Amelia"
Buddy cop movies easily stumble and fall into cliches, but this? This was cinematic art. "The Nice Guys" emerges as a breath of fresh air, not just as a buddy cop movie, but as a comedy in general too.
While it may not showcase groundbreaking performances from Ryan or Russell, I thoroughly enjoyed watching them. Ryan's goofy laugh and the comedic timing were gold, complemented by Russell's blend of silliness and grit, forming an amazing bond between the two characters. The chemistry between them was epic.
The filmmaking and the plot are not the main focus of the movie, which was perfectly fine by me. While it's not a technically impressive movie, everything else works. The characters, the dialogue, the comedy, and even the action were well handled without overdoing them and making it overly absurd and stupid. "The Nice Guys" carefully defies the cliche genre tropes and doesn't shy away from being dark and funny.
Definitely not a movie you go into expecting a Shakespearean plot or story. Instead, it's something you go in for the laughs, and you won't be disappointed.
The Nice Guys- 8.5/10
Ryan Gosling- 8.3/10
I don't spend much time with new comedies simply because they are more mean-spirited than funny and I get tired of non-stop dick and poop jokes. I can watch a Horror movie or gritty crime drama and not be put off by the cruelty, but I know those are going to be nasty going in. I want to laugh at something funny someone said or did and not because an uncomfortable sexual, racial or political situation makes you squirm with a nervous release of a giggle or two. So I took a chance on wasting a couple of hours on "The Nice Guys" based on some pretty encouraging recommendations. It was a wise choice.
"The Nice Guys" is an odd couple sort of tale. I like that it's not a cop movie but just a couple of guys that are wannabe detectives. I'd heard a lot about Ryan Gosling being great in this and he was as a bumbling, drinking stooge that accidentally helps solve the case. But Russell Crowe was really the center of the film. His character hates what he is. He's brutal, but his heart is golden. His interactions with Holland's (Gosling) daughter Holly are touching. Crowe isn't a straight-man to Gosling goofball, though. Jackson Healy (Crowe) is a screw-up in his own right. He just happens to be street-smart and tough as nails.
There is some nudity and violence in this but it never got gratuitous. The story was entertaining and there were some other small supporting characters that gave Crowe and Gosling plenty to play off of.
Maybe they caught lightning in a jar when they coupled these two actors together. Given this is a Shane Black film, maybe it'll span a sequel or two much like "Lethal Weapon" did. But even if it doesn't, I'd bet this movie will become more popular in the coming years. It seems like it will be endlessly re-watchable and quote worthy.
A buddy cop throwback in more ways than one, The Nice Guys follows a pair of mismatched private eyes in pursuit of a grand conspiracy that connects everything from porno to the auto industry. It revels in the late-70s setting, poking fun at the fashion, décor, celebrity and personal habits of the era, but at heart it feels a touch more modern.
I was struck, repeatedly, at the tonal similarities to the Lethal Weapon franchise, so it was with no great shock that I discovered Nice Guys' director, Shane Black, made his first bucks as a screenwriter for those Mel Gibson action/comedies. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are the new Gibson and Glover, an odd couple whose pursuit of the truth (and the accompanying payoff, naturally) only barely supersedes their grumbling dislike for one another. Crowe is the anchor, your typical gruff exterior with a warm, chewy center, but Gosling steals the show as his loopy, desperate, unpredictable counterpart. They both get some strong one-liners (and one spectacular silent team-up gag in an elevator), but for my money, Gosling does more with his.
The plot never fully recovers from a risky swerve at the end of the second act, and it plays the pesky kid tagalong card way too often, but it's not trying to be fine art and such missteps sometimes go with the territory. It is what it sets out to be, for better or worse. I enjoyed myself.
The Nice Guys is a surprisingly decent movie and a great comedy. Now, mind you it is still a comedy and doesn't aim to have a deeper meaning, but it is very good for what it is trying to be.
The movie starts off pretty silly and therefore sets the tone quite well. Flashy neon titles appear on the screen, indicating the time and place we are in and then we follow a young boy, stealing a porn magazine, when a car crashes through the house and said pornstar appears in front of him, dying in the exact pose as depicted in his magazine. It is very clear that this movie is not meant to be taken seriously and it doesn't shy away from showing raw nudity or violence, take it as a heads-up, if you will.
Next, we are introduced to our character in the stereotypical narrative style complete with fitting background music and a montage of what our down-on-their-luck protagonists do. Healy, played by Russell Crowe, is an enforcer, who likes to compare himself to a private investigator. He is ruthless and brutal, but he has a sweet core and in the end actually longs to do good, as we will see later in the film. What's so satisfying about this character is that he acts absolutely professional and holds himself back, never hurting anyone more than he has to, yet he never seems like a psychopath. March, played by Ryan Gosling, however, actually is a private investigator, but not a very good one. He cheats, he lies and he folds very easily. Nevertheless, he is not an unlikable character due to the wonderful relationship with his daughter Holly. Now, usually what this sort of buddy-comedy does is pair two completely opposite characters with another to create tension and laughter in their different approaches. Yet, in this movie they are pretty similar persons. Both are ruthless dunks, doing pretty much the same thing, only one has an actual license and is much less qualified, tho not useless...sometimes.
There is usually one or two things that drive every movie and here it clearly is the chemistry between our three protagonists, if you count Holly. Their relationships seem to evolve more naturally than in most comedies, nothing feels forced, all earned. Now, onto Holly. She is a thirteen years old girl, who talks and acts like an adult and, to everyone's surprise, the actor, Angourie Rice, can actually pull it off. Instead of being an annoying dead-weight, she actually helps with their tasks in quite a funny way. Her open, honest relationship with her dad, March, probably is where most of the hilarious moments stem from.
Even though the plot is not actually so important, it is quite interesting to see unfold. You do wonder what happens next and the fight-scenes, as well as the shootouts are thrilling.
All in all, there is little reason not to watch this movie, if you don't mind comedies and the occasional nudity, vulgarity and violence. The atmosphere of a 70s Los Angeles is pretty convincingly conveyed, the humour is spot on and the plot is interesting and gripping enough, but most of all the chemistry between the main characters are the heart and soul of this movie.
The Nice Guys
The reason to watch this film is for Crowe and Gosling, they played their parts fantastically and their chemistry was a joy.
The plot of the two guys both tracking down a woman, leading into a major conspiracy was outrageous but great.

The fact that this isn't getting a sequel is the most depressing thing ever.
I mean, I've never seen this side of Gosling and Crowe before, even in a buddy cop film. "The Nice Guys" has one of the tightest scripts in recent years from the excellent Shane Black.
This was fun. For once Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3) made a movie not set around Christmas time as well lol.
Ryan Gosling saying:"Jesus!" haha
Very underrated. You should go watch it. Amazing acting and dialogue.
Ryan is the detective i would be. Fake crying just to get leverage
Very stylish and sharp. Its not quite on the level of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang but The Nice Guys is a great "buddy cop" movie with great dialogue and awesome performances. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling really nail their characters and they are so fun to watch on screen. The story is a little inconsistent at times but its a fun ride the whole way through.
Been a while since I saw a movie this good. In a time when nuanced plot lines have been taken over by cgi garbage, "the nice guys" is a good return to basics. Shane black back in form since "kiss kiss bang bang".
Fave of the year. Classic buddy cop thriller we don't get anymore. That's a cliche reaction at this point but couldn't be more true. Want this to be enough of a hit to get a sequel which Shane black wants to do.
I loved it! The disco-themed setting is awesome and the Russel Crowe/Ryan Gosling combo really does work better then I expected!
I turned it off maybe 45 min into it. I was just bored and it felt like a cheap movie that’s already been made
The Nice Guys (2016)
Fred's Widow: It's my husband, he's gone missing.
Holland March: Missing?
Fred's Widow: I'm terribly worried, it's just Fred's never gone this long before.
[March casually looking around room when he notice ash urn with Fred's name on it]
Holland March: How long has he been missing?
Fred's Widow: Since the funeral.
Holland March: Well, I can start right away.
Huge a feel-good movie. The chemistry runs so smooth with the jokes smothered in drama. So organised yet so chaotic. I have nothing else to say except good things. Wish I could rewatch this for the first time. Ryan can really do it all.
I could watch 'The Nice Guys' on repeat. The movie is funny, stylish, and thoroughly entertaining. Shane Black not only impresses as the director but also, as expected, as the screenwriter. His strengths truly shine through in this neo-noir action comedy. Above all, the LA of the 1970s is convincing as the setting. This also applies to the two main actors, as Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling have great chemistry. Gosling once again demonstrated his exceptional comedic timing. It's a real shame that this kind of movie is rarely produced these days.
Still can't get enough of this movie.
"My name is Keith David, and from 1977 to 1978, I was addicted to encouraging giggly, blue-faced William Wallace impersonators."
It's good to pass the time, Ryan seems funny to me in the movie but something was missing, I don't know.
7.5/10
It turns out that Crow can also play light, mildly funny crime stories, and Gossling helps him quite well.
Written and directed by Shane Black, The Nice Guys is a fun and entertaining action-comedy. Set in the late ‘70s, a private detective and an enforcer team up to find a missing girl who starred in a porno and has become the target of a conspiracy that is killing everyone involved with the film. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling deliver strong performances and have great chemistry together. And, child actress Angourie Rice is quite impressive, giving the film some heart with a touching father/daughter relationship. Additionally, the costumes and sets do an extraordinary job at setting a retro ‘70s tone, as does the soundtrack. The storytelling, however, is a little weak; as it’s kind of hard to follow the plot and how everyone is involved. But while it has its problems, The Nice Guys is a clever and satirical film that delivers some good laughs.
This movie is the definition of something you watch just to have something playing. Some funny lines here and there, but that's about it. The story is pointless and not engaging. I had to turn this off halfway through after asking, "what am I getting out of this movie?"
Matt Bomer was born in 1977, the movie happens in 1978 lol.
Started out with promise, but started to fall apart half way through. Then, the usual - writers didn’t know how to finish it and it just went a little too bugnuts.
Better writers may have been able to salvage it.
Acting wasn’t horrible except for blue face who was just pathetic.
Cute, a bit campy. It's fun but not something I would watch more than once.
Ridiculously dumb, but good, entertaining
If I were a psychologist, and a patient with depression came to me, I would prescribe this movie for him to treat. Pure entertainment without you having to think why is it like that or that it doesn't make sense, you just sit back and enjoy the moment. It's like a movie, if you watch it, you won't get any wiser or an unprecedented movie experience, but you'll still be happy that you watched it.
You know who else was just following orders? Hitler. Mhh, March has been in history class, quite attentive.
The movie is a modern cult classic. One of those comedies that will live on for many generations. Like Airplane! Or the 70s Monty Python comedies.
If you don't think it's that funny, go to a screening with a big audience.
It’s good, the primary selling points are the characters and dialogue.
The plot takes a backseat and is pretty forgettable, but the banter and comedy are generally very well done and memorable.
I love that the action is small scaled and not overblown, you can easily follow what’s going on.
Fun soundtrack, great performances by Ryan, Russell and Angourie Rice, love the setting and period detail in the sets and there’s a good sense of pacing.
My biggest problem with this is generally the filmmaking. It can look a bit flat, and way too much of it is shot in boring close ups and medium shots, which makes the film a little more forgettable than it probably should be.
There are also some minor problems with the logic, but no dealbreakers.
7/10
You don't what to watch tonight?
Watch THIS
Very good movie, great actors, action and story
well its not that bad but its also not that good
its good some good lines I like the soundtrack so its okay for me
“Fucking Chet.”
Having heard how funny this was and seeing that it was directed by Shane Black, I knew there were going to be a few laughs. Little did I know I would think this movie is hilarious. Ryan Gosling shows his other side of acting in this and was super good it in. I need more of “fun” Ryan.
Again not fully show how much I liked this movie. Somehow good bu somehow not that amazing either. Still, somehow funny.
The fact that this isn't getting a sequel is the most depressing thing ever.
I mean, I've never seen this side of Gosling and Crowe before, even in a buddy cop film. "The Nice Guys" has one of the tightest scripts in recent years from the excellent Shane Black.
Hilarious for the first half, loses a little steam in the middle, regains the pace for the final third but loses some of the wit in the script at that same time...
It's like Hollywood took its love for The Big Lebowski and charged Ryan Gosling with playing Abbot & Costello with Russell Crowe.
For the first half alone, I loved it. Saw it when it came out and laughed my behind off in a nearly-empty cinema.
Watched it twice since then and enjoyed it immensely both times. I'd love a sequel.
(Kiss Kiss Bang Bang needs a rewatch after this as I think Shane Black got it right here and just missed the mark with KKBB.)
8.25/10
The movie, well, was pretty old school and cheesy at certain points (especially those with the girl), but I found that those are actually stuff that i missed from Black Comedies of the used to be, 10,20 years back. The Nice Guys reminded me a lot of The Big Lebowski. If you liked that one you are for sure gonna love this one too. Seeing Kim Basinger and Russell Crowe reminds me of the twist and turns in L.A confidential too, That was Russell Crowe back in his not-so-pregnant body.
Super fun and funny movie with great chemistry between Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.
Good humor nice plot and great perfomances..It was a nice suprice 7.7/10
Brilliant movie. Great cast, great script, great soundtrack. Very underrated.
For the first 20 minutes or so, I wasn't sure this was going to come together into something that interesting. It felt disjointed and pieces weren't seeming like they'd fit together, but then you get pulled into the story (a lot of it due to Crowe and Gosling being spectacular) and it's game on. The banter is spot-on, the characters are intriguing, and there's more than enough cleverness on display to take the private eye/noir/chase formula in directions you might not expect. After Shane Black's horrible Iron Man 3 and hearing The Predator was similarly bad, I wasn't super high on this, but went in for the actors. Glad I did, because this is right up there with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Shane Black's remake of his own Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a little watered down, but then even a diluted Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a worthy watch.
I found the plot to be a little confusing at the beginning and in certain scenes after, I still do, kind of. But overall, it was a decent enough movie. It started off with more comedy, little seriousness. Then, as the movie continued and the story progressed, it was more seriousness, less comedy. But the writers were kind enough to slip comedy into it at that point here and there. The comedy aspect was a nice touch and enjoyable, but I feel like it was unnecessary because the tone of the movie was mostly serious. Having a comedic nature even it was slightly in this movie was unneeded.
Funny, witty and entertaining as hell.
Besides the comedic antagonism and likeable characters, I think this was went up to an 8 when Holly, asked Mr. Healy if he's a bad man- and Russell Crowe just straight up lied to her. xD I'm not reallly sure who stole the show cuz they all kinda grow on you.. Writing was really hilarious.
Fave moments include:
When Healy smashed the bartender's face into the counter and was like, "We could do it the easy way or - we're currently doing it the easy way." ROFL So funny. "I thought you said leaving was the right move." "No I said smart move..... different."
And my all time favorite, the ankle gun scene. "Tally, you're not a murderer!" "She just said she killed 3 people." "I know but deep down-"
Then when Holland drops to the gun and starts fumbling with Jackson's pants- I was cracking up so hard. "Oh shit- did I dream that?" "No no no... no- you're right."
Other than the hilarious dialogue and likable characters, I also thought the music selection was really good as well.
That part in the pool with Richard Nixon pointing at Holland was so bizarre- which pretty much sums up the movie. The combination of dark comedy, slapstick, and serious action and bitter irony was definitely an odd combination. But it was entertaining- and in the end that still makes it good.
Huh. After I had seen the trailer, I got into the movie with zero expectations. And then I had fun. Lots of.
Never liked Ryan Gosling more, chemistry with Crowe is very good. And Angourie Rice was even better than them.
It certainly isn't a perfect movie, some of its gags failed. But the rest just felt "fresh", in some odd way.
This was one helluva movie! I loved that it all was so 70's. The clothing, the homes, just the sets in general. I loved it. For me, it was a quite refreshing story as well. A lot of bad turns, which made it unexpected. There weren't that many jokes, but the once that were in there were funny. I must say, I chuckled out loud a few times. Angourie Rice is such a cool girl. I've never seen her work before but she is really good! I don't know how I feel about Russell Crowe sounding like batman but I liked his character. Don't have much to say about Ryan Gosling, because I will always love him, doesn't matter what he's doing tbh.
My favourite thing about this movie for sure are the sets and clothing. I do recommend this movie because the storyline is good and the actors are great, all is good, all is great.
Clever comedy with useful violence. I enjoyed it allot!
I think it was good...they did stuff...pew pew pew whatever Ryan Gosling
In L.A., 1977, two PIs (Russell Crowe & Ryan Gosling) are assigned to find and protect a young girl. A mysterious conspiracy unravels before them.
As a fan of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang I was excited to see what Shane Black had to offer again after taking a trip on the franchise wagon with Iron Man 3. Fortunately much of the dark, dry humour and wit of the previous film remains here.
Russell Crowe steals the show, having gained an impressive amount of weight for the role as well as a surprising set of comedy chops. He’s the perfect counterpoint to Ryan Gosling and makes what could be an unusual pairing work perfectly.
The Nice Guys is funny, entertaining and original, and yet it falls just shy of greatness. The plot is a little flimsy & too many of the jokes don’t quite stick. It’s a shame because it’s probably one or two re-writes away from being a classic.
Nevertheless, this is one of the better comedies of the past few years and does more than enough to make it worth your while.

Terrific movie, funny and exciting with a great script. A franchise would be nice, don't you think...guys?
"check out my ankle gun"
never thought that i would say this about a comedy but im looking forward to the sequel
Slow plot and long running time, many children for a thriller, Gosling's overacting in a non-hilarious movie and Kim Basinger's expressionless face is... is... no words to express. Nothing special about this.
This is not a bad film. It's just all rather dull ... and stuff.
Worst movie I have ever seen!
Mildly amusing in places but lacked interesting story line.
Very bad movie,boring,garbage story.
Nice guys and still best character was THE loli ...
It was a Lethal Weapon-like movie. After it I found out, that the director was writer of all of the Lethal Weapons and The Last Boy Scout. Nice.

This was one hell of a ride, fun, fast, smart, good story despite what some people said, nice black comedy with action... and stuff. Great performances and great chemistry between Gosling and Crowe they were very funny and the girl, well, I loved all her scenes, was cute and funny, she was great. Very good movie, my favorite from this year.
