The comedy isn’t the same today than it was back then and it’s disappointing because I love that kinda gags. Still a great comedy!
"The Naked Gun" is one of my favorite comedies. The slapstick, the setup to the joke, the payoff...just great. I loved the original "Police Squad!" TV series. It only lasted 6 episodes back in 1982, but it was a lot of fun.
This movie features some great character actors. There's Leslie Nielsen, George Kennedy, and Ricardo Montalbon (Priscilla Presley not so much). It makes no sense to try and explain the story. Everything is wordplay, gags, and visual absurdities. Nielsen should be considered one of Hollywood's finest comedic actors. High praise, I know, but he's one of my all-timers.
Meh oke funny sometimes
5/10
One of my five favorite comedy movies of all time. It is quite dated now, but it will always be one my favs. I laughed out loud the first time I even saw a commercial for the movie (Jane telling Frank, "Everyone should have a friend like you!" while Nordberg rolls down the stadium steps in a wheelchair and launches airborne.)
The first time I saw the movie (as a 13-year old), I laughed through the whole thing, but when it got to the part where he "sings" the national anthem, I was laughing so hard I was crying & having trouble breathing. The whole entire baseball game sequence is top notch. The mic left on when he goes to the bathroom at the televised press conference, all the quotable lines, Leslie Nielsen at the top of his game...just superb.
A hilarious comedy with great Leslie Nielsen.
What a fun, enjoyable ride. I never saw it before or when I was a little younger like I did with Weekend at Bernie's until now, so there wasn't a feeling of nostalgia like there is whenever I watch the latter. But it's up there up with Weekend at Bernie's now. And I hope one day I'll look back on this movie or watch it again with the same feeling of nostalgia. This movie deserves that. There were a lot of golden, memorable moments. I could see some similarities with movies like Johnny English and Get Smart. I guess the inspiration for that originated from this movie. Or maybe it's a specific type of something or other that's common and existed for a while. I don't know. Anyway, I was thoroughly entertained every second of the way. I can definitely see myself watching this again and again.
30 years later and this film still holds up. Still so funny.
7/10. The first half felt boring with only few laughs here and there but when it picked up pace, it really worked for me.
Funniest movie I've ever seen :D
Fun movie, i laughed a few time :)
"Nice beaver!"
I feel like it's hard to explain to the new generation how much people appreciated this style of humor back in the day. It is classic and to me it will always be funny. Leslie Nielsen is a national treasure. Oh it's also insane seeing O.J. Simpson in a comedy.
From the files of Police Squad! An unlikely revival of a short-lived TV series that's pure slapstick 101; goofball comedy in its most condensed form, with equal parts love and scorn for the long line of self-serious detective shows it shamelessly lampoons. Like the Zucker brothers' previous comic jam, Airplane!, this is largely an excuse to spill jokes, gags and puns at an incredible pace, with zany antics and wacky laughs piled so high that I'm impressed they found room for a story in-between. Granted, it's not much of a story - the nonsensical villainous plot involves mind-control bracelets and the Queen of England - but it's enough to connect the dots, to feed the writers with fresh material for new riffs and keep the whole production from growing stale.
Leslie Nielsen appears in his best-remembered role, standing tall as the hard-boiled, yet totally brainless, police detective Frank Drebin. Not necessarily the first stop in his transition from dramatic roles, but certainly the moment where the dam broke and he slid into full-time, high-profile comedies. He's the anchor that holds the whole rocking boat in place, a real pro at maintaining straight faces in the most trying of circumstances. The supporting players are less consistent: Priscilla Presley sure wasn't hired for her acting, and it's awkward seeing OJ Simpson in a sympathetic light (though, at the time, it was a good casting), but George Kennedy is excellent as Frank's long-suffering partner and Ricardo Montalbán clearly relishes the chance to get slummy and slimy with a loose villainous role.
Bottom line, The Naked Gun doesn't aim to be more than a silly, light flood of themed punchlines, and it nails that bullseye. Repeatedly. Not every swing is a smash hit, but the sheer volume of material ensures a side-splitter or two in most scenes, with a few achieving near-legendary status. I could watch these YouTube clips until the end of time.
One of that kind of movie that it's impossible you at least put a little smile in your face, because it has all kind of jokes (verbal, eschatological, silly jokes, acid humor, etc), not every of than works, a great part aged badly... if you are looking for some movie like Airplane!, this movie is an option, but worse.
Hilarious comedy based on James Bond movies.
Frank Drebin is the only police officer I trust, even though this is the same officer who was nearly ran over by his own parked car.
Staggeringly funny - still, after all these years!
And from a time when everything could be made fun of.
An absolute classic.
10/10
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! is a hilarious slapstick comedy. The story follows Detective Frank Drebin of LAPD’s elite Police Squad unit as he investigates a plot to kill Queen Elizabeth during her royal visit to America. Starring Leslie Nielsen, Ricardo Montalban, O.J. Simpson, and Priscilla Presley, the film has a strong cast. The comedy consists mostly of sight gags and physical humor, but it works (for the most part). Still, at times the jokes get a little too broad and juvenile. Depending on how one feels about slapstick, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! is either brilliantly hysterical or a mass of stupidity.
Liutenent Frank Drebin (Leslie Neilson) has to foil a plot by Ricardo Montalban to assassinate Queen Elizabeth the second. But c'Mon the plot doesn't really matter. All you need to know is this was a movie version of the "police Squad" show and that it was made by the team of Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker in their heyday. Which means non-stop sight gags and slapstick from beginning to end at breakneck speed with nary a time to catch your breath. This movie is hilarious Rent this, "Airplane" and "Top Secret" for a night of non-stop laughter. You can thank me in the morning.

Fantastic movie, and a great classic!
