The Master 2012

A very long movie which tells an uninteresting story with no point.

This movie is not for everyone, but people who do appreciate great cinematography will really love this film

Ahh, an expose of L. Ron Hubbard of Scientology.

When I first watched The Master I didn't really like it that much. I thought the movie was slow and kind of dull on my first viewing, but after re watching it for a second time, I really liked this movie and the film did grow on me after awhile.

Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, and Philip Seymour Hoffman were absolutely brilliant in this movie, as I think this is the best I've ever seen from them. The cinematography was perfectly shot, the writing was great, and Paul Thomas Anderson directing was superb. The Master is a work of art.

I had to stop midway, I really disliked it.

Does not make any sense. But thats a requirement for any artsy-fartsy movie: to make zero sense.

Acting, music and cinematography are superb, though.

It just lacks a plot.

The Master was great. Joaquin Phoenix was unbelievably good, even if he was rather hard to understand in the opening scenes. Physically, he was incredible though, with his awkward gait, facial expressions and tics. That processing scene, dayum. As usual, a good performance by PSH and great direction by PTA, plus some really nice colour grading going on.

Excellent performances from both Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

How the weird Scientology cult started

""Leave your worries for a while. They'll still be there when you get back. Only memories are invited""ù

Phillip Seymour Hoffman was a titan.

"When we're in love we experience pleasure, and extreme pain."

I guess this is what art feels like when you watch it. Each frame is calculated and often I was left asking "what the hell was that?" Joaquin, Philip and Amy were all stellar yet frightening at times. Paul Thomas Anderson, you have a unique brain.

ORIGINAL SCORE: 5/10 Really incredible acting. The movie just didn't interest me at all. RE-WATCHED: I don't why how i ended up watching it again (with almost 3 years between viewings) bit I'm glad I did. I don't know why I didn't take to it originally. The idea is a great set up and the character journeys as well as relationships really got me hooked this time 7/10
One common negative feedback comment is that people feel the movie had no point. I think the point is looking at the characters and their choices and then asking why they would make those choices.

Joaquin Pheonix may prety much be the best actor from his generation

Cinema Paco: Picture 5/5, Sound 4.5 / 5. Great performances and camera movements, the script has not convenced me

The plot is pretty uninteresting for being centered on a cult leader and a crazy man. Luckily the direction is great. Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman were both robbed of their oscars, Phoenix especially. His performance was one of the best in this century.

Altough the movie isn't on par with "There will be blood" and "Magnolia", Joaquin Phoenix acts just brilliantly. His performance is just one of the best I've ever seen in my life. Mr. Hoffman is, as always, great but hasn't got he charm of Joaquin. A shame the story has no real clue or pointe, the actors are the best asset to the movie.

I loved "Magnolia," a film which I inevitably compare all Paul Thomas Anderson's movies to, and this one comes up short. This is one of those movies that I think is going to be dissected for a long time. People are going to examine different aspects of it, and here's where I come down: This is purely a performance piece, and while the performances are very, very good, it falls short with some of the dialogue (which is still delivered impeccably and with feeling), character development, and direction. The acting nominations are well-deserved, but beware, if you're expecting more than you may be disappointed.

One of the worst film I've ever seen.

Ok ... wtf happened? I really don't see the point of this movie. Cool acting & atmosphere. Cool sequences and thoughts ... but absolutely 0 point to the movie. Save yourself the trouble and watch something more interesting.
