Every woman is portrayed as hysteric (the mother an egoist, one daughter is ultra violent the other is a religious fanatic) and the men are all well-balanced saints who are generous enough to let the crazies spend time with them...
I suspect that the writer / director has drawn from her personal life for the film and is too close to the source material to do the female characters justice.
