Great opening sequence, as the two hitmen look for the Swede in the small-town diner. From there we get a Kane-esque investigation into the Swede's backstory, especially as it concerns his relationship with Ava Gardner and a resulting double-cross with a payroll heist. Everything here is good, with occasional greatness, but doesn't always have the crackle you get from the period's best noirs. And I wish Gardner had a bit more to do.
