This story can be crazy and ridiculous at some points but the message that it tries to pass through is very important. Nature and polution. Plants are tired of humans polluting the world so they start to release toxins that lead humans to kill themselves. Yes, it's strange and pretty much nonsense. But looking at it on the other way it's at least a different story about the global warming than the usual stuff we are used to see.
It's full of suspense and some of the scenes were people are killing themselves are so creepy and chilling. The feeling of fear it's in the air.
I think the thing that didn't worked well for me was Mark Wahlberg, he can't convince me. I don't think he is a good actor and because of that I can't say if it was supposed to him to play a crazy character like that or if it's just him that is bad.
I waited 10 years to watch this because everyone said it was awful. Not a bad flick after all. If you like Stephen King or M. Night Shyamalan then you might like this.
I know this movie have some problems. But i always enjoyed it when i watched the movie. I think the movie is underrated here.
If Mark Wahlberg talking to a fake plant isn't entertainment, then I don't know what is.
But seriously it's not as bad as it's reputation. It's not good by any means but not the worst movie ever.
this feels a bit like a parody of horror films at times and because of that it's hard to know whether i'm supposed to be taking it seriously or not at any given moment. but it's definitely entertaining. knowing the cast can actually act (sometimes.....) and that m night shyamalan can do great things directorially (sometimes) makes me think that maybe everyone just had fun being ridiculous with this movie in the production phase and the result is a quirky, melodramatic horror.
love that these people couldn't manage to socially distance effectively at all - i think watching this in 2021 made it a lot funnier to see people screaming about needing to avoid large groups while also saying not to split up or get separated.
so bad it's good. I'm going to go buy some "superfluous cough syrup" ;)
this really show you a different perspective on how the Earth or Mother Nature is doing it's work to rid the problems.
This might be the worst M. Night Shyamalan movie I have seen. Despite promising previews, the film falls flat, leaving you feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. The acting is decent, but it's not enough to overcome the film's weak and confusing plot. The film lacks the suspense and intrigue that Shyamalan is known for, and instead relies on cheap thrills and unexplained phenomena. Overall, The Happening is a disappointing addition to Shyamalan's filmography and not worth the time for those looking for a thrilling and well-crafted movie.
The plot says they flee to discover the truth. In the end of it, that is not convincingly explained. I wonder why I had this movie in my possession. Thankfully it was just over 90 mins.
A lot of it does not make sense. M Night Shyamalan's idea was not bad, but unfortunately, it was not good enough for an entire film. This could be a short story at best, as there have to be a lot of fillers to keep the narrative going. There is a point where the leads stop in their tracks wondering where to go next, what to do next. It looked like the movie was exactly at the same juncture, thinking the same things.
The music was okay, it goes to become eerie at times but that feels more genre-bending than organic in the film.
Mark Wahlberg has a very effective frown in all his movies, this wasn't an exception.
This film is worth sitting through to its conclusion. While its slow pace invites nitpicking criticism (and Mark W.'s acting is a familiar target), the film gels in the final 20 minutes. I was pleased that I didn't give up.
I just like almost every movie i see, more or less, but hey this was bad. Just left me empty, could have been structured so much better. I usually like Wahlberg, but maybe not his best performance here.
There were some very visually shocking moments and I thought the score was very "Twilight Zone"-ish; both good things. There was no "twist" or shock ending in the story which I have come to love about M. Night Shyamalan's films. Mark Wahlberg John Leguizamo and Zooey Deschanel were boring and the little girl who played Jess was awful.
Definitely one of the better American movies there’s been for a very long time. Instead of repeating tired old tropes as usual, this is all original and keeps you gripped from beginning to end with a fascinating storyline. Unsure of why the bad reviews, but maybe these people just want tried and tested old plots to keep them entertained, and just don’t want something new. Strange but true, enjoy.
Plants Avenge of Humans in this film.
Edit the bloody parts and the storyline becomes slightly better than terrible.
A strange, horrible and unprecedented movie.
I watch this after 12 years since everyone seems to hate this movie... but finally decided to watch it... now it does have many mistakes and stuff... maybe my expectations where really low cause I actually enjoy this movie... social distancing to survive? Over populated planet? Ring any bells?
Won’t be buying this one but wasn’t as bad as everyone said it was
If anyone ever asks me what the worst movie I've ever seen is, I quickly and easily tell them that it is this movie. I actually saw it in theaters and left the theater absolutely stunned at how awful it was.
It's like a Stephen King story but with a lack of his brilliance. As well as many bad lines. M. Night Shyamalan's robotic performances he gets out of his cast is pretty bad too.
Okay, this was an okaish movie. Does the job of creeping you out like how a doomsday movie must. Execution could have been better.
Adding plants on "what can kill" list
Nothing happening. Xxx xxx xxx
Some scenes scared the shit out of me looool
I thought the toxin was in the air I was breathing!!! I held my breath, I covered my nose, I had goosebumps WTFFF I was litterally becoming paranoid in this moviiieee!
But seriously, what the heck was the cause of this mass suicide?? O_O
(I'm happy to see Miss Deschanel in a different motion picture! Last and only time was in New Girl, ha)
feels like a piece of art made with bad
quality just to tease artists and critics while pissing everyone else. from scripting, to acting, they all hit a half baked attempt, probably on purpose.
a constant slow mood throughout the whole film, filled with hopelessness and mystery, plus the normal amount of reality shock which will always still be less shocking than actual reality.
no surprises for good or bad, the first scene sets the feelings for the whole film.
you have been warned!
It was an “OK” movie. I definitely wouldn’t hate on it as much as some people are, but it’s really not a fantastic movie either. It’s just “there”! It’s just there, plain and simple. If you watch it once, no need to ever go back to it.
y’all have no idea how much 8 year old me was confused by this movie. i thought thsi could be real for a little after
"All right, be scientific, douche bag. Identify the variables. Design an experiment. Careful observation and measurement. Interpret the experimental data. Interpret..."
Strangely hilarious and competent in a B-movie perspective, wheather your laughing at it or with it you can't deny it has funny undertones. The themes it touches upon are nothing funny though, I like that it's about polution and nature fighting back it's relevant especially now. The whole outbreak was nature threatning humanity because of polution. Then it suddenly stops and everything is back to normal, giving us one last chance. Three months later nobody learned so nature strikes again, although this time's the last I believe.
The performances are doubtful, the dialogue is laughable and the plot is devoit of logic and filled with loop holes. Like all Shyamalan movies the score is great. Lots of brutal deaths and it has some thrilling and fearful moments.
What the f*** was that?! M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening is utter garbage from start to finish. When a mysterious virus leads people to start killing themselves, a teacher and his wife flee the city and attempt to find safety. Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel are horribly miscast and give terrible performances. But the real problem is the script, which is awful and made worse by the overly serious and preachy tone. Still, some of the imagery is quite disturbing and delivers some frightful chills. Yet the ridiculousness of the plot undoes all of that and prevents the film from gaining any momentum. Poorly made and ill-conceived, The Happening is unbelievably bad.
I just caught this movie again on the Sy-Fy channel. Overall, it's an ok movie, just not great. However, Wahlberg's performance was just awful. I mean worse than any of his other movies (I know, I know, he's not the greatest actor to begin with).
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
Review: The Happening
To me, this is not a movie about finding out what the issue at hand is, or trying to crack the mystery behind the phenomenon, or even about figuring out what the twist, if any, would be. It's a story about communication, how we, in today's context, are so reliant on mass media delivering every bit of incident deemed newsworthy, and providing that amped up "insights" to send us to paranoia. If you notice of late, we have been bombarded with crisis after crisis, or could it really be instead, the flavour of the moment that the mass media drums up? Avian Flu? Food Crisis? Fuel Crisis? Business Continuity? Terrorism? The list goes on, with news editors determining what to drum up, and where to send everyone crying out that the sky is falling. The Happening does just that, as we see newsflash after newsflash providing speculation after speculation that everyone listens, and accedes to.
But it's not just the mass media alone, but the story also puts the spotlight on how reliant we are on our mobile devices, so much so that they actually have already become second nature to us. If we want to talk to someone, we pick up the phone, or we text the person. Gone is the value of face to face communications, as we talk to one another through an electronic device and medium. And we all know what happens to these wireless gadgets come a crisis, when base stations get knocked out, and we feel incapacitated, and so alone. And the rare occasion when our little island experiences unexpected power brownouts and we lose connectivity, we go into fits and strangely enough, feel at a loss at what to do next?
We are creatures who must talk to one another, otherwise I guess we'll go insane, and not everyone's cut out to be a hermit living alone, making that informed decision choosing to be cut off from the outside world and be self-sufficient. Perhaps that's why isolation has been designed as punishment, and one probably might go a little bit cranky, losing social skills. Just like how the prominent old lady in The Happening become overly suspicious of every wee thing that doesn't go her way.
Shyamalan gave us probably the weakest protagonist in his tales to date. We are familiar with Mark Wahlberg in his many alpha-male action roles, like those in The Italian Job remake, or his sharpshooter Sniper. Here, his Elliot is a school science teacher who's the most clueless amongst all clueless characters in Shyamalan's fictional worlds. He absolutely, like the audience, has no idea what's going on, has no plan, and doesn't hesitate to tell everyone just that, exhibiting some classic deer-caught-in-the-headlights look with wide eyes and flared nostrils. Even Keanu Reeves pale in comparison to what Wahlberg managed to do here. Zooey Deschanel's Alma too plays Elliot's just as clueless wife, only that she's harbouring a secret that you can decipher the minute it gets suggested on screen. Throughout the movie, husband and wife has to sort of issues as the clock ticks down to doomsday, and just like The Incredible Hulk, this little love story slowly grew in importance.
And to pre-empt those who would dislike the movie, you're likely to find fault with the distinct lack of scares - OK, there's really one jump-from-your-seat moment, and various other scenes with an unflinching camera in the many faces of death - and the exclamation of "you mean that's it?" The build up is masterfully done, though the ending might be a little bit abrupt and I suspect there might be some cutting of corners which might find their way to the DVD. Forget the fact that The Happening had to undergo some massive rewrites by Shyamalan for it to be accepted by the studios. Forget that this movie contains elements of suggestion that it's eco-warfare and Mother Nature is fighting back with results as significant as that we've already seen and experienced, with unbearable temperatures and disasters of large magnitudes. Like movies such as The Mist, while it's about the great unknown, it also serves as a warning that one day, just one day, we might be faced with questions we have no answers to, and to compound the problem, we're no longer collaborating and communicating effectively to work toward a solution. And that is a scary thought indeed.
My Score is: 4/10
So, you watch The Happening and you're like, "What the hell!" The trailer didn't even look bad. Like, the trailer actually looked like a good movie. I don't understand. M. Night, you have all of these resources. You've got good actors, a good composer. You've got everything going for you, and you screw it up. What did you do? How did you do this? There is no way that the same person made The Sixth Sense, there is no way. This is impressive. This is impressively bad. I remember before watching this movie, All I remember is that everybody was telling me, "Don't see it. It's terrible" And I asked them why, they're like, "It's plants." It's plants. So there's your first problem, M Night, it's plants. But it's not like you even did it in a way, where it was revealed at the end, like a twist, which might have been better; it's blatantly explained throughout parts of the movie, and about halfway through, you already know what it is. How can I take any of this seriously? How can I take THIS seriously? What is this? You know, when I watch this movie, I watch it as a comedy, cuz this is a really funny movie. Most of the hilarity comes from Mark Wahlberg, who doesn't fit his character at all. Somehow, they thought it was a good idea just to have Mark Walberg in a high-pitched voice, and sound really concerned the whole time. And it was a good idea: it's hilarious. Everything about this movie is bad. Nothing makes any sense.
Watched the Q2 FANEDIT..significantly reduced down to 60minutes and converted to black & white...still not a great film but a little more watchable.
