A derivative action movie that wastes its star power. Gosling is still as charming as ever, but even he couldn't make this more interesting.
what a boring movie and Ryan is ... without taste
Another phone-it-in action movie without even a hint of an attempt to develop a plot line: burned spy chased by baddies in his own organization proceeds to demolish half of Europe and kill everyone who gets between him a a randomly inserted little girl. That's it! That's the whole plot. It's as bad as the endless parade of brainless DC and Marvel schlock that has been pouring out of Hollywood these last few years.
One of the better silly but fun NF originals in awhile. Probably since Extraction. I'm grading this on an enjoyment actioner scale. Part mission impossible, part Bourne this is mile a minute absurdist fun. Gosling and Evans had a blast. Some of the baddy CIA peeps were poorly cast, but the main folks did well. 6.7
[Netflix] Russo Bros. make "arthouse" films in the same tone as Captain America and clones of "Mission: Impossible" with the same apathy as their Avengers. There's so much abuse of drone shots that it seems that some character is going to fly away. And while second-unit directors do an amazing job, this overpriced Netflix toy (from when they hadn't already kicked out hundreds of workers) is boring 200 million times.
Netflix spent $200 million and this is what they produce. What did they exactly spend the money on? It's not the best movie or the worst one. Go into it with zero expectations and you won't be disappointed.
If you've read the books, you'll be disappointed because this movie is beyond garbage. Actually shit smells better than this movie.
If you have not read the books, it's not a bad way to pass two hours of your life. However there are better movies you can spend your time on.
Watch the movie if you want or don't, not really missing out on much.
Netflix really perfected the high budget yet low budget boring but just watchable action movie.
2 of the most handsome men alive can't save a shite movie. Just retire Russos, your best work is behind you.
couldn't tell what was going on in most of the action scenes. i thought it would be more like a bourne film but it's a full on marvel cgi and shakeycam fest.
Acting was bad, looks and feels like a low budget movie, and cgi looked so awful. Also, Chris Evans looked so goofy with a mustache, I couldn't take him seriously.:clown::wastebasket:
We’ve seen this movie a hundred times already. Now we get to see it with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.
It’s an ok action movie if you don’t have anything else to watch. Otherwise it’s not worth spending two hours on this.
acting is bad.... very very bad....The movie is boring and very long...
Couldn't watch. Fast forwarded big time.
Criminally misused pool of talent. How do you take this lineup and end up with this?
With close to 3x the John Wick movie's budget and close to the budget of a Bond or Mission Impossible movie, you end up with a bunch of uncompelling action sequences with no oomph, with noisy visuals loading up every scene.
Typical movie of its time. full of candy action and a weak story. makes me realize just how good some of the older real stories were.
only watch if you're really stuck.
not worthy of your time
0 original
A lot of shots with nosense
Typical film for a saturday without plans
I wanted to like this, but it was just boring despite the cast.
Ryan As super human indestructible and who does not act ... boring
really i just put 5
Very good performances with a non existent story. I’m disappointed because it could have been really good.
Typical over the top shoot em up black ops movie. Nothing original with plenty of plot holes and violence. Very very generous 5/10
This movie can be qualified with just a single word: lame.
CC: everything Jordy said. I'll only add my other thoughts. I will give it the not ignominious merit of "I was never bored"
Ana de Armas is pretty much wasted on the blandness of this script and what it had in store for her (as well as many other) charcter(s). Dani (I had to look down because I didn't once remember hearing her name) was two dimensional, 2.5D at best. To contrast this, Julia Butters made quite an impression in her introduction in the flashback with Gosling. Her initial scenes were probably the most realistic and humanly written, and the girl oozes charm out of her pores. She's a star; she just needs the right role. She acts and sounds years above her age, and had no issue playing opposite Gosling. Those scenes were the only ones that got any genuine emotional reaction from me, outside of excitement. Likewise, Billy Bob Thornton played his role with dignity and pathos.
The action (and acting; that Carmichael guy was terrible) was inconsistent, but expensive and bombastic. The film really can't balance tone, and the action movie humor and other clichés all falls flat. Except for Chris Evans. He was fun to watch. Not to the point of rooting for him, but he was a bright spot.
It was a fun, disposable action film that never left me bored, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for miss Butters. Hopefully something better than standard Netflix fare. Kate wasn't the best thing ever, but it had a tighter and more human script while being just as over the top, if not more so, and more stylish, and was cinematographically innovative. All the lead actors deserved a film like that one. I'll watch Kate again at some point. I doubt I will this one.
ps. Also, can someone please point me to a film that doesn't coyly pretend like the CIA doesn't and hasn't, for decades, routinely engaged in much worse behavior than this, throughout South America, the Middle East, and Ex Presidents know where else? The fact that this happened to go down in the heart of the EU and is still just swept under the rug is ridiculous, but the internal review board scene at the end was as fantastically fictional as any EmCee-Ewe film. We could make Apocalypse Now in the 1970s, but now every single film has to toe the propaganda line, and when there's wildly unethical happenings connected to the CIA, it's a "rogue chief" or "rogue contractor", instead of intentionally engineered coups, mass murders, and unilateral actions against sovereign nations carried out by the CIA.
How could anyone enjoy this noisy nonsense ?
Do producers get paid extra the harder it is to understand the dialogues or what?
Well let's start with a round of applause to the Netflix marketing department. In a world of superhero multiverses and sub-standard Netflix big tent flicks, they've pulled off quite the coup... They've told everyone that the film will be SO bad that they have engineered probably the most watched film of the year on their service... And what will people say 'that was much better than I thought it was going to be. I'll happily rate that a 7 or 7. 5 out of 10'. Not 'this was awful, I'll only rate that a 7 or 7.5 out of 10'.
Applause and a pat on the back for a clever coup. Bravo, Netflix. Bravo.
So let's review it like any other film...
Plot? Quite predictable. Usual action spy fare. Like a long arc in a series of Nikita but it isn't offensive. Enough happening plot-wise for a series of setpieces to be hung on.
Direction? Feels a bit like Boss Level in that there's a glibness to the whole thing. Lots of silly little drone shots and fast edits, coupled with entirely unrevealing but smart-mouthed wisecracks. In short, it matches the ADHD nature of most of its sub-25 year old viewers.
Cinematography? Falls foul of that horrendous HDR 60fps way of shooting that Netflix loves but it makes everything look like a soap opera. Go back to shooting 23fps and reduce the CGI in post to match. Please.
Performances?
- Gosling is fine. Gotta feel for the guy right? He spends months getting jacked and ripped, puts in a fine performance. And the film gets destroyed by critics in a reverse marketing campaign where it makes it impossible for him to come out of it with any kudos. But I'm sure he's got a 8 figure bank transfer to show for this.
- Evans doesn't work. It's like he's channeling Timothy Dalton in Hot Fuzz and it doesn't sit right. Interesting to see him off the juice and Gosling on it to see how the reality of acting is now akin to a Men's Fitness cover shoot.
- Armas. Give her a full blooded action film already. She owns her scenes here and she did the same in No Time To Die. I'm seeing some sort of Cynthia Rothrock-style trilogy with her in the near future. Joking - she can have whatever crap they have lined up for Charlize Theron to be in and she will make it reach its full potential.
- the young dude out of Bridgerton... Terrible acting. Overwrought, unconvincing, transparent. And I bet they'll make him the next Bond. Let this be a lesson... He's not up to the task.
- Iron Fist's girlfriend. Does okay. Nothing much to work with and she out acts the Bridgerton guy without breaking a sweat. Again, Barbara Brocolli... Think before you do something stupid.
Verdict? It's a perfectly fine bog standard spy thriller that falls victim to a few of the tropes of the time. 100 locations, fast edits, AI-written script, couple of dodgy casting choices.
Is it the absolute abysmal wreck they said it was? Not at all. Is it Top Gun Maverick? Hell no.
7/10
What. They made a movie from the book. I really hope they don’t fuck this up because the books are beyond awesome.
Similar feeling you get from watching Red Notice or Uncharted: very international, fast-paced, 3/4 of the time they're shooting at each other or blowing things up, not much more than that.
The cast is on point (Regé-Jean Page a little over the top) but exactly because of that, giving them some more time and having some more build up for the characters would have made a better flick.
I don't know, I still get entertained and enjoy these kind of movies every now and then but - as another user mentioned - I'd rather have a "The Nice Guys" well-scripted, more story oriented, playing on the characters' chemistry. And here there were the possibilities: some buddy cop between De Armas and Gosling, some familiar tone with the niece and Fitzroy, some more Cahill's involvement... good interactions wasted at the altar of explosions.
I don’t understand all the hate. This was a very entertaining movie with some awesome action scenes. Turn your brain off and enjoy the ride.
The Gray Man strictly felt average as the film ended, there was nothing memorable or worth talking about. Nothing felt like a saving grace for the film. All i could think was that this was just your average run of the mill action that even if you decide to skip it, it's not a loss. And even at some point i was thinking does this movie even wanted such a stellar cast as this ? I mean, i did like Chris Evans as the sociopathic Llyod Hansen & Ken-Doll Ryan Gosling was fine, Ana De Armas was much better as Paloma in No Time To Die than as Miranda. And nothing noteworthy about Dhanush, he came, he did the job, and away he went. The Russo Brothers tried way too hard with the film trying to make it out like another Winter Soldier or something but the rushing cinematography and not so good of a soundtrack and everything just felt bland.
End Note : Watch it if you want, or not, not even a huge miss.
Nice and over the top action movie. Love to see Chris Evans as a bad guy for once. Ryan Gosling solid as ever. Really awesome fight scenes. Turn off your brain and just enjoy the movie
If you love action movies. You will love this movie
Pretty solid action packed movie. To me, fight scenes were very well choreographed and executed, camera works were satisfactory, they took their time with the story, and I finally enjoyed a Gosling performance.
I'm no critic...I just know how to enjoy a good entertaining movie without over-analyzing.
Cool action flick to kill a couple hours with. Nothing extraordinary but not a bad way to waste an evening.
Same action movie that’s been done hundreds of times before, but with different actors. Duller than watching a cheese go mouldy. Only good thing was that it wasn’t overly woke.
Put Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, and Ana de Armas in anything and I'll watch it! There seems to be a lot of hate heaped on this movie, but I actually really enjoyed it. The plot is stock standard for the genre, but the action was solid and watching Evans do his best Nicholas Cage impression was loads of fun. I liked that most of the dialogue was quippy. I got over the few dodgy CGI moments. And, sure, some of the action scenes involved people having worse aim than the worst Star Wars stormtrooper, but most action flicks have strong plot armor for their leads. This is popcorn entertainment that knows what it is, and I love it for what it is.
:heart:x7
What is it about the one-man-army type action movies that make them so much fun? The refusal of the hero to die? The utter disbelief of no matter how many assailants there are the hero always mows em all down? I don't know but they sure are fun. This is one of those movies. No moral lessons here, just good old-fashioned killings with an impossible survival rate.
And you just gotta love a scene that starts with "Oh Shit! . . ."
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
nothing new just a boring action movie with same old script.. hard to connect with any characters
Well, if you're watching it just for the action, then it's good but for story it mostly doesn't make sense. Chris Evans acted his part well though.
I really liked it, non stop action but not over the top.
Not bad, but with nothing new, and forgettable. I have seen the same movie many times over the last years. If this came out around the year 2000, I would rate it differently. Gosling was mostly good, Evans was a horrible caricature of a character (and probably not paid enough, as he does nothing most of the movie) and Armas showcases the worst military tactics ever seen on film (yes, you run into the middle of a square full of shooters or yes, the obvious hiding place in in the middle of the room is obvious).
Too many cuts during the fights, too many drone shots, and too much runtime. Too little thought behind it all. At least the action sequence in Prague was quite good. The highlight of the movie.
very well directed & choreographed fighting scenes, great lighting
that nade scene back in Vienne was cheeky af & funny
Ana de Armas was BEAUTIFUL in this movie, such a good performance
& good drone shots
"Now, whatever I just did to your ears, it's not even torture. I just made it up on the spot. Just came to me."
This film was serviceable in the most appropriate way. Of course, that seems to be an unpopular opinion, or more so that my interpretation of 'serviceable,' in this context, is that this film wasn't bad by any means; it just could've been better. Based on what I've read, some people agree that it was serviceable but still with plenty of 'not-so-good,' with which I can't entirely agree; others hated it all together: and I think it comes down to how the last few years to now, there has been an oversaturation with films that are just serviceable, getting under the skin of enough people now, like the sound of a waterdrop in an anechoic chamber constantly, or maybe just being in one of those chambers long enough, to where they can't enjoy them and want all of them to be perfect.
Contrary to what seems like the majority's opinion, in that this film is one of the worst films ever, in somewhat of a hyperbole way, that's not the case. The story was super straightforward and run-of-the-mill: the pacing and progression were fast-paced; big deal. The general filmmaking, like the use of CGI: quick cuts sometimes, "shoddy" lightning, as in a bit dark sometimes, and "bad" dialogue, which didn't come across that way to me but rather intentionally juvenile, and I thought it was appropriate and delivered appropriately, while understandably somewhat of a turn-off, wasn't that detrimental. Some of the camera work was creative, which I can appreciate. I was expecting those aspects to be much worse or certain ones to be worse because of how the majority seemed to have felt about them. They could've been better, but the negative things said about them are blown way out of proportion, in my opinion.
Generally, there were some things a little rough around the edges.
The fight choreography was quite decent, except at times, the direction and editing spoiled the choreography by Daniel Hernandez (?) and the ones performing it, whether the actual actor/actress or stunt doubles.
I feel like the film would've benefited greatly with a better score; it was alright but underwhelming. I also feel like it wasn't as prominent as it should've been.
The cinematography (while decent enough at times, especially with certain shots) felt bland and uninspired overall.
Both the score and cinematography seemed to fluctuate back and forth from good to less-than-good.
The quick cuts and blinding colors during the fight sequence between Six and Four were a bit much, and as quickly as it began, it was over, thanks to so many quick cuts. Fight sequences take forever to do: and require so much effort, I'd imagine, and just for ones that don't even last that long, so making them super fast-paced as your vision isn't an issue; using that as an excuse to half-ass it with cuts: or rather how you do it, is the issue, especially since it spits at the hard work done by those who choreographed and performed it. But that's the only instance where the quick-cut approach was an annoyance.
All the performances were decent. Ryan Gosling was Ryan Gosling but with more of a serious tone to his character, which wasn't a problem. Ana de Armas was a pretty face; sorry, a super pretty face: her attractiveness is remarkable, and her performance wasn't bad at all; she had some good action/fight sequences. I haven't seen any films Gal Gadot is in, but I know people consider her a pretty face with subpar acting ability, and I feel like Ana de Armas isn't just a pretty face. Regé-Jean Page and Jessica Henwick did alright; their performances gave the impression of being aggressively comical. Billy Bob Thornton gave a surprisingly decent performance; his acting in the scene with Lloyd involving fingernails was funny. Chris Evans and Julia Butters were the stand-outs for me; his performance was entertaining, and her acting was quite good, including feeling natural.
Ryan Gosling is now two-for-two with having a young co-star actress who somewhat stole the show. First, it was Angourie Rice in The Nice Guys, and now it's Julia Butters in this film.
I was impressed by Dhanush/Lone Wolf. He was essentially this film's equivalent of Randeep Hooda/Saju in Extraction. And I liked that a lot; I liked Saju a lot. Both stole the scenes they were in; both were also powerhouses. So, in a sense, Lone Wolf, and, by extension, Dhanush, was a highlight. His reappearance in a sequel would be delightful.
All-in-all, this is a slightly above-average enjoyable watch. It had its faults, but I didn't consider most of them to be as horrible as most people. To those with a stick up their ass: maybe use it to give your prostate an ol' massage, yeah? And to those without a prostate: get creative with that stick. Its use is better for that than hating everything about this film.
I'm surprisingly quite interested in a sequel, which, as I'm writing this paragraph on Tuesday, has just been announced/confirmed to be happening. This film was left open-ended, and there was also the whole thing with the "Old Man." I was surprised to learn that the novel was the first of a series. I know. I know: how dare he be interested in a sequel of this sewer waste!? Well, deal with it.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the sequel and hope it's improved on certain aspects in this one. Even if it isn't, or not to a greater degree, I'll probably still enjoy watching it as long as it's like this one, entertainment-wise. Should this turn into a series of films and not just a sequel, that would be cool; I'm sure the novels are pretty good.
(By the way, just as a throwaway comment, Callan Mulvey's accent in this film, and the sound of his voice, immediately reminded me of Small Hands/Aaron Thompson. If you don't know who he is, watch the video/scene with him, Owen Gray, and Kristen Scott. That's essentially the peak of 'p word.' Callan also sounded like Alex Hassell, Translucent in The Boys. And ironically, Alex looks similar to Small Hands. I doubt anyone cares about this, but I wanted to mention it.)
Good to see some action from ryan gosling that did well in his role and some nice film work from the russos brothers, really enjoyed it, fun film with some cool effects too and all good from the rest of the cast.
I am not an action movie guy, but this was watchable. I usually pause and sleep midway through action movies, but I watched this one for the whole 2hrs. If you need some action in your life then this is a MUST-WATCH.
Dug this! Fun kick-ass action movie. No overly complex plot or preachy hero. Ryan Gosling is believable and funny in this role. Great seeing Chris Evans be a stylish douche instead of a bland goody two shoes Captain America. Much prefer him in this lane. Either way check it out!
This was a great movie. Lots of action, good story line, good acting when there was some. Give Ryan Gosling a British accent, and he becomes a contender for the James Bond franchise. 8/10.
It's odd seeing the top comments somewhat slate the film. I think, as an action flick, it's pretty solid. It's not a John Wick or an Atomic Blonde, but it's not trying to be. It's certainly more of a 'popcorn' film, but that's not a bad thing if they do it right. They do it right. Never really goes too cheesy or too campy (Chris Evans gets closest, by design).
WOW. This exceeded my expectation. I think Gosling found his new calling. And Evans was perfect in his role. Also, de Armas... golf-clap. She legitimately pulled it off. This was not a B movie by any stretch. The filming and choreography were all top-notch.
Ryan Gosling acquits himself well in this formulaic but stil excting action thriller. A sequel is almost guaranteed.
I have no problem turning my brain off for action movies, and there certainly was a lot of action in this one. The scenes without the CGI backdrops even looked very good...
But if you do a final standoff with a flare gun and then fire said one shot weapon to scare someone, that's where things kind of collapse for me.
Now that was action plus and no stupid “ Super Heroes “ !
Between this and Cherry, it’s becoming more and more clear that the MCU’s best director is called Kevin Feige.
Netflix clearly spent a lot of money on this, you can feel the price of your subscription going up with every new set piece that’s introduced, but the end results are still unforgivingly bland and generic nonetheless.
It’s their attempt to compete with Bond, Bourne or Mission Impossible, but if anything this feels like a poser imitation of those superior blockbuster franchises. The plot is in fact literally ripping off both Skyfall and The Bourne Identity at the same time, but forgets about any of their depth in regards to story and character.
The Russos are clearly trying to recapture that same tone and spark from their Captain America: The Winter Soldier days, but they end up making something that’s more akin to the quality of Red Notice.
In terms of directing they kinda got outdone by their own second unit director with his Netflix action flick, as I’d argue that Extraction is a marginally better film than this.
The action’s poorly done and cheaply put together, lots of annoying editing choices (heavy overuse of drone shots, quick cuts and can the Russos pick a normal font for once?), corny dialogue, distractingly bad CGI, boring visuals and music (why is everything so low contrast, foggy and muddy?); not a lot to recommend about this one.
The acting’s fine, Evans is having a blast, but I have absolutely no idea why an extremely picky actor like Ryan Gosling chose this script in the first place. It seems like a paycheck movie for someone of his caliber. Just watch The Nice Guys instead of this if you want to see Goose in an action comedy, we don’t need these 200 million dollar direct to streaming action films.
4/10
Action was murky and looks like it was shot with an iPhone by candle light. The script feels like it was taken from a 90s DTV film. Ana De Armas aside the acting is super arch. I was trying to work out if the Russo's were having a joke at Netflix's expense. They've green lit both a sequel and a spin off. The Russos are the real evil geniuses here given there are certainly none of them in the movie. Just a lot of British people with terrible American accents.
In my opinion, not worth watching if you like realism in your thrillers, like I do.
Solid action movie. Great stunts, lots of loud noises and Chris Evans was great. I don’t think wanted to be a brainy spy thriller, so there wasn’t much substance to the story, but it was very entertaining.
The last half hour sucks
Nice, I enjoyed it. I love how the movie was filmed. Ryan and Ana also did a good job. I'm glad the captain America from their universe was a bit weaker.
Why did they make this pg-13?!?! Come on Russos this could have been so much more with that r rating
of course they put a knife throw in there. god this movie was so predictable
Serviceable, but all aspects feel undeveloped, sans the fight sequences.
very nice movie. A bit long for my taste but it contains everything, from destroying helicopters to hostage taking. the movie's budget is way too high, they should've left out some more expensive stuff. it wouldn't have hurt the movie. the battle scenes are very long.
两星半, watched at 2022-07-24, imported from douban
The end of this film was incredibly unsatisfying.
At first I thought it was a bit weird nothing hurt him but later on there's a throwaway line to show his imperviousness to pain was part of his training. I know it's plot armour but the fact they thought of this really sells it. It's like John Wick was written as a 90s Swarzenegger story. I don't mind either. Sprinkle in a little Matrix/John Woo action and you get this. Not a poor performance in this show. The lighting is what you can expect from a modern Netflix movie. High contrast and often colourful.
The mustache on Chris Evans, I'm not too keen.
7.5/10 - Pretty nice. "Just another Thursday."
It has cool action scenes, style, a story that is good enough, and lots of nice/funny lines.
Some of the highlights:
PS: I like the end credits animations/renderings. It's a nice idea and useful as a recap.
This was certainly a fun escapade. There are a couple plot holes, and the main characters' imperviousness to injuries and the accompanying pain make this feel more like a mid comic book come to life. And while many of the shots are fun and creative, for every cool drone shot, there's another that merely swings back and forth aimlessly.
Thankfully, none of that gets in the way of my enjoyment of the movie. Too bad it gets in the way of the film being particularly good.
Very cool set pieces but a very boring watch. Not much else to say...
Trite plot, annoying dialogues, chaotic cgi action, waste of good actors. Well done Russo bros...
It's good stuff, but ought to have been so much more.
'The Gray Man' features all the ingredients to have become a quality movie. Unfortunately, it is simply 'just' a watchable popcorn action flick. That's not necessarily a criticism in itself, it's just that I had hoped for far greater.
Ryan Gosling puts in an entertaining performance, his dynamic with youngster Julia Butters is reminiscent of his similar showing with Angourie Rice in 2016's 'The Nice Guys'. Chris Evans and Ana de Armas are noteworthy positives alongside Gosling.
The worldwide vibe of the story is cool, while the action sequences - aside from one 'skydiving' scene - are satisfactory enough. I enjoyed the film thus have no real complaints, it just could've/should've been something more memorable.
this was an action packed film...this is my very first Rayan gosling movie..and I can say that he was impressive with the action sequences...still I haven't watched any blade runner movies..but now i am interested in that franchise....
This is awful. I nodded off watching this yesterday and now I'm web surfing. Grief, this has no engagement factor at all.
"Extra ten million to the first guy to put a bullet in this Ken doll's brain."
For the amount of money they spent and the number of stellar actors that are in this, it was... fine. I don't hate it or love it, and there are a few things I did enjoy (I could watch a whole movie with Chris Evans' character as the lead), I just think that this was nothing special.
This is one of the best movies I ever seen this year
It reminded me a lot to that Schwarzenegger's 80s Movie: Commandos. The end if very similar: One army man killing everyone and blowing everything up, trying to save a kidnapped girl. Even Chris Evans looks almost the same as that Bennett character. And in the the final fight, they threw away the guns, and the bad guy took a knife out to even the odds, just like Commandos!
Did they bother even writing the script or just filmed the action set pieces and put in bit and pieces of dialogue as they went along.
If you ignore the story and dialogues, there are some good action in the movie.
I mean, if you're going to subject us to this senseless dribble, at least give us more than 1/2 second of Gosling's ripped physique!
Says the lesbian, ;)
The cast is excellent and the budget enormous.
I personally like most of the actors. I have seen a lot
of this genre.
There a few good Moments. Don’t expect clever writing. The character relationships are really odd. But the focus is on the action.
I guess you have to compare it to the newer Mission Impossible movies. Or maybe John Wick.
Compared to those it’s a snooze fest.
Bladerunner vs Captain democracy in: #savethegirl111!!!
This is yet another expensive Netflix film that looks and feels cheap. No matter how much they pay for A-list actors, they end up producing the same garbage. Such a waste of talent. Also, the Russo brothers might have to stop making non-comic book movies, because they don't look so good.
When Ryan Gosling talks in movies, nothing can come of it. Or can it? No. Some of his lines - and those of many others - are hilarious. But: The action is quite good, even if sometimes overdone in a weird way. I felt well entertained, but I don't throw praise around either.
This film wants to achieve a lot. It wants to be a clever spy movie, an exciting action thriller, a stylish piece of pop culture, a potential franchise set up - it wants so much and yet achieves so little.
For such a hype beforehand and an all star cast, there's little to no substance to be found here.
Ryan Gosling is reliable as the stoic action hero, but even can't do much with a script that gives him so little to do (why an actor like Gosling who so carefully chooses his projects took a second glance at this one is beyond me), Ana de Armas and Jessica Henwick are equally wasted and I have no idea whatever the hell Rege-Jean Page is doing. Chris Evans is entertainingly unhinged, I give the movie that.
It also looks fine overall, but that does not say much. It's visually not even interesting enough to pull a "style over substance."
Granted, I decided to watch this mostly because of the cast, so maybe I am the wrong target audience here, but still it is such a generic, run-in-the-mill action film if I have ever seen one. There is nothing new, nothing clever, nothing deep to explore here. Everything you think will happen, happens. The dialogue is cliched and the characters are paper thin. Even if you enjoy action movies like that and they are your kind of comfort movie (I like Rom Coms, so I'm not a person to judge) it just misses something. It's not exciting enough to keep you even remotely on the edge of your seat and (apart from Evans) it's so humorless and takes itself way too serious that a basic entertainment factor is just missing. I mean seriously, if you do the grand ridiculous action scenes, at least own them.
They will make the inevitable sequel because the Russos directed some of the highest grossing movies of all time and can basically do whatever now, but maybe it is time to revalue that. "The Gray Man" could be snapped by Thanos, and nobody would even notice.
Stellar cast, fine set pieces. The rest is utter trash. The only reason this movie is even watchable is because the actors made an otherwise hopeless script into a somewhat enjoyable mindless film. What a waste of talent.
Nothing dreadfully wrong with this movie. It's a normal action movie with all the right amount of killing and explosions. I did like seeing Ryan Gosling in a serious yet lighthearted role as a stone cold killer who makes quips now and then. The cast is good, maybe too good for the level of quality this story has. One thing that bugged me was the use of drone shots...they made for very cool action takes but felt like they were edited wrong...idk I just felt like they were too long or didn't provide much to the sequence other than being a high speed tracking cam. Also, it's cool to see Dhanush in the film but I can't forgive him for hitting Ana De Armas so many times lol. Overall, don't expect a Captain America type of movie... expect an Extraction type of movie (the one with Chris Hemsworth).
I had so high expectations from this movie. Had no idea what is the plot about, only knew it was shot in Prague and people seemed quite hyped about it. However the movie was such a disappointment. Story which was told several times already but better, some shots were so weird that I could not even follow what was going on. Overall experience was just unsatisfactory.
For a while, I was thinking of rating it a 7, but it is not a good movie. It is fair, but enjoyable to watch. Also got some charm to it. I think it is not taking itself too seriously with overcolored characters and that is its strength.
Also Ana de Armas once again, after “No time to die”, stole my heart.
Oh and the scene when Claire is left in a castle room is such a strong “Commando” reference ;)
Amazing actions scenes and great acting. The Prague scene was very intense but lesson I take from this movie is to always carry a grenade.
Nice and entertaining but for sure not even close to the book story.
Better than I expected. A few parts where I didn't wasn't quite able to suspend my disbelief, but loved seeing Gosling in a big action role. Appreciated Ana de Armas getting more action sequences after she only showed up in No Time to Die for about 5 minutes.
It's also clear that the Russos have a love of film that they dropped into this movie. Lines like "An extra $10 million to the first one to put a bullet in this Ken doll's brain" feel like a possible throw away, but knowing that Gosling is playing Ken in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Barbie film make that such a fun inside joke. A bit more obvious was the line about why Gosling's character is called "6" and he explains that 007 was taken. The film feels a bit self aware, but not to the point of overdoing it.
It's a good action flick. Don't mind reality too much and you're golden ;)
And no, the story is not extremely predictable at all :)
very good action movie .. the fights and shots until more power.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, given the reviews. It was an easy, entertaining watch. The action was predictable, but pretty good. There were some funny moments, and the one-liners delivered. It's worth a watch.
A pretty fun movie with a likeable cast, but it's clear that Netflix is massively overpaying on these movies and that's a bad thing.
OMG Literally me. Loved the moment where Ryan said "Now I've become the gray man, destroyer of worlds. I suppose we all thought of it one way or the other"
Premise - 13/20 - CIA, assassins trying to kill each other, blah, blah, blah. I'm in, but not all the way in.
Actors/characters - 18/20 - Great cast! Ryan Gosling is believable in this role. Chris Evans was great as a psycho govt contractor. Billy Bob Thornton is usually on the money. Ana de Armas is wonderful again. The actors and the characters were the main reason for enjoyment.
Story - 16/20 - Certainly not much drag in this high-paced action movie. Most everything made sense.
Dialogue - 15/20 - The banter was pretty funny. Thumbs up for sarcastic wit.
World-building - 15/20 - Or destroying. How much damage was done in this movie? Anyway, the creation of the back story fleshed out the story to create concern for the antagonist.
77/100 - 4/5 stars
This kinda takes me back to those Steven Segal movie's 1990's. I was pretty receptive of it though, think I needed a movie like this to reset.
Ken meets Captain America in The Boring Identity. Anyway it was a light sunday afternoon movie.
Entertaining enough with the highlight being Ryan and Ana's interactions and the fight scenes. However too much crap CGI (plane scene was crap) and drone shots everywhere. Also does everyone need to blow themselves up? lol
But really the story is just the same story we've heard a million times, nothing at all innovative.
Also I know these are action hero types but 6 got stabbed a little too much for such an easy recovery. At least in John Wick it's more believable. Also Henwick's character seemed pretty underused and meh, but I guess more in the sequel
Action: 7/10
Acting: 6/10
Story: 4/10
CGI&Drones: 3/10
Entertaining to say the least. The plot is a little all over the place but i didn’t hate it as much as some others say. I can always watch Ana De Armas. So I’m good!
I thought it was a great movie, some other a-hole said this was a bad immitation of Bond, Bourne and MI, but this is the best action movie in the last 3 years. Chris Evans character makes you really hate him, Ryan Gosling does a really great job doing action scenes as he seems more well known for romance movies. There's a lot of great chase scenes, and hand-to-hand fighting. There is a little over-kill on the amount of artillery used, most of the countries that the scenes take place in don't have the artillery used by the "bad guys." There's also a good story behind the movie, the way that the CIA works as a shadow government program but that there are some good people that work there in order to balance the agency out. I would highly recommend this film.

End already! This was an boring, horrible, stupid, annoying, irritating and predictable mess of a movie with a lazy ending.
Not even the lovely Ana de Armas save this shit show.
The Russo Brothers continue their Marvel crap with horrible fight scenes with a 1000 cuts, but this time with smoke to make it even less viewable.
And what was up with that "Lone Wolf" character.
And that Sue, what a screaming idiot that was.
But the worst acting performance was easily Regé-Jean Page.
This year has been filled with brain dead movies but this was one of the worst.
