The Girl in the Book 2015

a touching story. emily van camp is an excellent actor—i think she does a great job of keeping emotion simmering under the surface with characters that are avoidant, dealing with mental illness and other dissociative issues. not a lot of actors are able to make that sort of thing feel authentic, and it means a lot to me as someone with those issues to see it portrayed responsibly and candidly in film and tv. and the actor playing her character at a younger age was also solid in her performance. it wasn't a happy film, but it was a moving one.

On paper this movie had a lot going for it - good casting, an interesting premise and the promise of a developing story that hinted at some kind of sexual issues. The beginning was good - I particularly liked the overlaying scenes in the restaurant that showed how her life changed yet didn't change from her teen years to her adult years. The end was also pretty good. The middle? It was alright. Overall it was a good movie but there is something that I can't put my finger on that prevented it from being better.

Intriguing at the beginning, and quite timely in the wake of the celebrity scandals that are popping up on a daily basis. Sadly, however, the movie is quite formulaic, and despite its supposed feminist leanings, it is actually the opposite.
